...without introducing myself and thereby embarrassing my Southern roots upbringing, let me beg your pardon and began again by introducing myself!

I've been lurking here for ages, and have posted on the Kitchen Table since 1999. ("My Page" says 2001, when we had to re-register. I'm a Spike-era gal from before the paid membership days.)

I'm a USAF veteran and have had the great blessing of being able to travel and live in England and Spain; as well as Delaware, Texas, Indiana, Mississippi, California, and now North Dakota.

I live in Larimore, ND, and share my life with Harry, the most beloved dog in the world and his great-nephew Sam, who will soon be the second most beloved dog in the world, and my DH, Wes, retired from the USAF and now working as a civilian on the base.

While in the Air Force I worked as a Public Affairs specialist. I've also worked as a real estate agent, secretary, sales clerk, Loss Prevention, and book keeper. For seven years, while in California, I worked in a jail facilty with 1,200 inmates. Now that was a hoot; I'd look around some days and think "How did I manage to stumble into this job?" I guess I'm a Jill of all Trades and Mistress of none. I'm not working right now, except to play General Contractor for all the house repairs and renovations.

I was born and raised in northern Arkansas. I attended the same school for 12 years and graduated in 1974. I left Baxter County at age 19 and the Jacksonville area at age 30. I've lost most of the accent but none of the memories. It's never left my heart; the hills are home.

I enjoy gardening - flowers, herbs, and tomoatos; birding - this will be my seventh season to host a Purple Martin colony; reading - serious mysteries, history (pre-history to 1800s are my favorites), and "fun stuff" along the lines of Stephanie Plum. I also try to keep up friends strewn around the globe and with the lives of my 10 nephews and nieces.

I love patchwork, quilting, sewing, scrapbooking, cooking, beading, antique shops, junk stores, thrift stores, book stores, fabric stores (imagine that! LOL) and tea shops.

So, if I bring hot tea and biscuits, and try to behave myself, can I join your quilting bee?

Welcome Caroline. What an interesting life you have led. You sound like an extremely optimistic person Â describing your time working in a jail as a "hoot!" Good luck with all of the house projects. That sounds like a ton of work.

As I look out my window at the gray gloomy day, I think hot tea and biscuits sound very nice. Please, come on over!

What...we're not supposed to be all drunk and whatnot on here? G'bye folks! +oM PS....I do get what Floral speaks of. I live in what is considered (and is) one of the northernmost states in the US. The 45th parallel-that's half-way between the equator and the N. pole-runs right through here. But if one looks at a map of Merry Old, they'll see it is much farther north. As such, sun angles in winter take on a meaning that may seem quite foreign here. For my part, I don't know a single soul who doesn't come down with at least a touch of Seasonal Affective Disorder around November in these parts. Day after day of gloom, each one of those days a little shorter than the prior. Makes it easy to have a feeling for what the UK resident may experience. I didn't look at the videos but I get the sense of what's happening here. A couple thoughts: In all cases of neighborhood strife, it seems best that the parties involved talk to one another first, long before it gets to this point. I wonder if opportunities weren't lost in that regard. The other point-Leylands grow sufficiently fast that you can't say the angry, shade-hating guy shouldn't have foreseen this and went with an different property, if in fact he moved in after the plants were installed. Finally, there is a fine line in all cases where your freedom to do as you wish conflicts with someone else's freedom to live as they wish. In any and all such cases, compromise of some type is far superior, IMO, to rigidly holding your ground. Life's too short. And as much as I am a tree-lover (Anyone who follows my thousands of trees planted knows this) there are legitimate cases, and this appears to be one, where the other factors may trump the desire to leave these be. The fact this is a hedge gone awry does seem to have a part to play in this matter. +oM

Ryan, I do believe About Face IS the name on this one! I'm glad you know your roses! The varieties have become a giant blur when it comes to names... I've looked at so many tags, planted so many roses this season... I can't remember them all. I have a huge tag making project coming up, so I'll be making a list of what we do have. I'll try to remember to share it. We bought a roll of aluminum roof flashing, a set of good tin snips, and we already have an electric engraver and a hole punch. I plan to cut my own tags, engrave them with each name, punch a hole at one end, and hang the tags so we have a permanent way to identify each rose. Plastic and wooden tags do not last more than one season here. As we are in zone 5, b to be exact, we have learned to avoid grafted roses. J&P are known for lovely, and expensive, mostly grafted roses. We've discovered that the way to go is own-root roses. These will actually survive one zone lower in temperature than their grafted counterparts, I'm told... with a little protection, of course. We've also discovered that it's better for us to buy roses that are grown/propagated in a climate similar to our own. Many rose growers and retailers seem to be located, or get their stock from, southern states... namely Texas. We've learned that there are many wonderful roses being bred specifically for growth by northern gardeners, and we're relishing this discovery! It's best if we avoid grafted, tea type, tree, and other types that prefer mild winters. Our collection includes Canadian, German, Iowa Buck, a few English, and many old fashioned hardy and species varieties. If a rose requires more than a good mulching, we don't want it. We have too much to do already, so having to take special precautions to save a rose over winter is simply not feasible. For you, I would guess roses that can take the extreme heat are ones you prefer to purchase. Hybridizers are finally beginning to meet the needs of the different climates, and our choices are growing. Sedona is a beauty, indeed... but I do believe it's rated for zone 6 or 7. It would never survive here. Be sure to post photos when it blooms for you! I would love to see that! Harry the cat, and all of our animals here, are acclimated to our changing seasons... they grow and shed appropriate coats depending on what time of year it is. The dogs are lucky to have a heated kennel... spoiled, actually! When our kennel was in full swing many years ago, we had our American Bulldogs housed outdoors. They were on chains and runs, with 50 gallon drum doghouses. When stuffed with straw, and having the dog inside, one of these doghouses was a steady 55 degrees in winter... even when the temperature and wind chill dipped below zero. Dogs shiver for various reasons... pain, fear, nervous habit, and not always just to keep warm... 50 degrees is very comfortable to a dog with a decent coat of fur. A cozy temperature for us would be considered almost too warm for a dog. The cats usually hide out in the horse barn. They have cubbyholes between the bales of straw or hay, and you can usually find a cat pile of napping kitties. Harry's harem and their offspring! As an aside, I was watering my indoor garden last night, and I noticed that a majority of bulbs are overdue for a fresh pot of soil and some grooming. I'll probably be rearranging the jungle once again... very soon! I just brought a load of plants inside... tender types, like a banana tree, Crinum, Oxalis, Alstromeria, some Brugs, etc... the question now is... where will I put them?! They're presently crowded on a basement table! Ok... I've rambled enough... tell me about the roses you have, Ryan... what varieties do you find work best in your climate?

Give it 10 to 14 hours of Direct sunlight in any open field or greenhouse all summer and winter, and you will see it take off, even without much fertilizer.. The sad part is that many of us can not provide that much light all year long or the prerfect conditions. Some of mine will just rest for months, or seem like they are in supended animation, that is just the way they can be, while others will grow every month.. If it is green and healthy, then I would be apt to think it is more of a light issue than a mix issue...If you were having yellowing leaves, leaf drop, dead branches, fungas gnats, and salt build up in the mix, then soil would have to be adressed almost immediately for best results first, the lots and lots of sunlight.. How much sun does this plant get anyway? Other than the growth being slow, are there any other problems it deals with? Can you post a picture of it? How often does it spend outdoors and where so you put it? Where do you place it come winter in your home? How much sun does it get then? What kind of mix are you using? ... All the time. I never seem to know when to stop, even with hubby calling out the door "Time to come in now". When it's hot I pin a pillow slip with crushed ice in it around my neck. When it gets dark I turn on the outside lights, but try to come in by 10 PM so the lights don't bother the neighbors. I'd rather be outside than inside any ole' day and gardening gives me an excuse to be there. Incidentally, for insect bites Bob happened to notice that HEB brand antibiotic ointment has a topical pain reliever in it so it stops the itch of mosquito bites very nicely. Maybe other brands have it too. Well, almost time to put the rolls in the oven. My computer is right next to the kitchen so it's easy to take a little rest from cooking in that chair :-) Wishing you all a blessed Easter Sunday ...

Hi Lola; my birthday is Feb. 4 so we can be almost-twins! I have a cousin born on the 6th, and DH always thinks my birthday is the 2nd, since I celebrate Ground Hog Day with much more enthusiam than my birthday.

It's gray and gloomy and cold here, too. Are you anywhere near ND? You could come help me close a wall and pick out tile!

It could be fun! And we can pretend the tiles are quilt patches and do something creative!

Ah ha, Susan. We're "exposed!" If you don't tattle me out to the KTers; I won't tattle on you! LOL

Thanks Vicki; my camouflage no longer fits. Too bad, it was so comfortable.

We've got a few things in common: I'm an occasional KTer too, I grew up in ND (Fargo) and I've got a birthday in February!

Welcome to this wonderful forum. You'll find very nice people here and I'm sure you'll feel right at home.

Welcome. I'll bring some home churned butter. I'm an army brat and ex army wife and lived far and wide too. Ditto house renovations. Our's is nearly 200 years old. We've been renovating for twenty five years. Scary, isn't it?

Hi Caroline, Welcome! I can tell you will bring a few chuckles to our quilting bee....fun fun fun! We mainly quilt but many of us have done the reno thingy so we will freely advise you on projects even though you don't want it...just part of the bee!

I don't live too far from you...in Sask. Canada. I remember many a good Canadian Days in the US of A! I really love your US draft beer and the 15 oz glasses. I can have 2 of them before I am P*&$! At age 65 I am a bit past physical reno labor but I could interpret your vision...remember we are very visual here! I have learned not to travel the beautiful Dakotas from Oct. 15 to May 15..were you flooded this year? I also have a passport problem right now..don't know if they will grant me one EVER.
