Trim the fabric under the second fabric and iron down. Then sew all around the pattern piece and your LARGEST stitch:

Rotary cut around the pattern piece and set aside.

Take one black square and center it right side up on the BACK of pattern on the spot that is numbered 1 pin and fold back at 1/4 inch out trim:

Place the square of fabric 1 on the edge of the black trimed piece and pin. Turn over and sew on the line:

Iron open:

Next fold back the pattern at 1/4 and place a black square on the edge and pin, turn over and sew and iron open. Then trim at 1/4 and take square of the 1 fabric and place it at the edge of the black, Turn over and sew on line tuen over and iron open:

Here I'm cutting at the 1/4 after the line:

Continue on until you have all five block sewn at the top. Trim at 1/4 out from line 6. Place 2 3/4 inch piece of fabric wrong side up on top pf the small blocks pin and sew:

Iron open then sew on the basting stitch around the out side of pattern trim:

Do the same for fabric 2.

Pin pattern pieces together carefully:

I have never stitched around the edges when PP before -- is that just to hold the fabric in place and steady?

I have never stitched around the blocks, either. Does it make the block more stable, prevent unraveling thread.....?

Do you pull off the paper later?

After all four blocks are done and together I pull off the paper. I sew around the pattern pieces to hold them but it does make it a little harder to take off the paper.
