What's the surface of my new pool?

I'm hoping you can help me figure this out.

We bought a new-to-us house in January with an older pool. The previous owners replastered and put in updated coping at some point, because the pool is in really good shape (and gorgeous.) We're having a great time with it this summer.

However, every time we swim in it, our feet get totally torn up! Can any of you experts help me figure out what the surface is, and whether there's anything I can do to prevent our feet from shredding all summer?

The surface is bumpy and mottled in color - it shows no dirt, which we love.

You're going to need to take some more shots for us, up close (no kids!). Maybe right along the tile line, so we can see how that meets as well, and get a peek where the water is shallower.

Do you have any pebbles, or flecks, or anything at all IN your plaster? Could it be that the plaster is just really rough (i.e. worn?). Before we re-did our surface, it was like walking on low-grade sandpaper, bothered out feet a lot.

If the surface is bumpy, it's either a really bad plaster job or it's a pebble finish. I'm guessing it's the latter. There are a number of pebble finishes out there and we won't be able to tell by looking at a photo which one it is (because they all basically look the same). There are finishes with large aggregate and small aggregate. Some people equate the large aggregate finish as feeling like a basketball, or an orange. If that's what you have then it should feel bumpy, but it shouldn't tear up your feet. They may have used a rougher aggregate than they should have, or if it's an older application the aggregate may be separating from the base which can leave some very jagged edges exposed.

Thank you, we have belabored every single detail as, I am sure, everyone does. No, we still have the deck to be laid, sprinkler re-route, cleanup and then plaster last. I am right outside of Dallas, so we are still having spring showers and it might be a bit. Plus, the travertine we ordered for the deck is honed and the decking place only carries tumbled, so I am not sure how we figure that out.

Our pool surface is new; our chemicals have been fine. We do have a screen cage over the pool and I am wondering if rust from that could be dropping in the pool at just that spot, but that doesn't make any sense because the water would distribute the rust throughout the pool evenly. We don't have any leaves in there since it is all screened in. someone told us if it was black mold growing in the pool surface orginally it would keep coming back? We are now trying to scrub it really well to see if we can get rid of the stain we want to avoid draining the pool so soon after we just filled it since we have to use our well and it's 15000 gallons which means our well has to draw down and we have to use the well pump to fill it for 12 hours straight or more, more electric, more wear and tear on our well pump. Can we clean the surface with something under water? thanks for any help and advice.

thanks for the prompt reply-- that was a LOT of fill dirt you had brought in--were you worried about the quality or that the trucks would harm the pool? our house was built on fill dirt brought into the site/development because this part (our lot and the ones on our side of the short street) originally were in part of a flood plain (because there is basically wet-season drainage creek behind the development...) because the house had to be elevated out of the flood plain and build on fill dirt--the people who built the house paid for more expensive foundation--a piered beam foundation vs a floating slab... I don't know that I want the pool TOO close to the house's foundation...there is a long but fairly narrow covered porch/patio that runs along the back now--it could be extended outward--before the pool scape starts... most of the shade is close to the house-- that is another reason for me to move the pool out into the yard more... I will have to take some pictures of the yard -- my explanations probably do more harm than good... you must have a couple of acres for your house anyway...much more than our city lot...

First I would always follow the PB's instructions. If there is a problem you dont want to be the cause. Second, there is much debate about the heating thing. We pebble pools on 110 degree days, and with the sun shining on the surface it is probably hotter then that, so will water heated to 100-104 hurt that, probably not. Generally the colors get a little darker, then lighter with hydration. You will get a cover pump with your cover. You can not move the cover with water on top of it, so it has to be pumped off. You can leave it open during a hard rain, but you will probably get a lot of debries in the pool from all of those trees. You want to be very careful if you do leave it open during a rain storm, as the first fold in the cover can catch a lot of water, so when you try to move it it is too heavy, and will tear the cover, or break the rope, or damage something. So generally best to keep it shut, and pump it off. Talk to your PB about these things as well.
