Severe weather - check in please!

Seeing all of the severe weather reports for the Midwest - East I have been worrying about so many of our quilting friends here on GardenWeb. Please let us know if you are okay! I am keeping you all in prayer.

Here in NW Ohio, we're under a tornado watch for the rest of the afternoon. But so far this season we've had RAIN and more RAIN with some wind, but nothing like they've been hit with in the South.

I've also been wondering about some of them down that way...hope everyone is OK.

I'm with Linda in NW Ohio - & so tired of rain I could scream!! But at least the flooding they've been calling for in our city has not happened. And I have faith it won't.
Hoping like crazy to hear from those in the southwest & south. Can we PLEASE have an UNeventful summer??!!

George, You are a very sound sleeper! We had a good-sized tree snap entirely in half about 5' above ground during this morning's storm, so Tim and I will spend part of tomorrow cutting down that tree and cleaning up the mess. Amy, I thought I did a fairly good job of not freaking out because I was watching it on radar and listening to the local storm spotters long before we were tornado-warned, so I knew where it was and which way it was moving. I knew we were not in its path if it continued on in the same direction without making a strange curve or twist to the west or northwest. I still went and opened the tornado shelter and stood by the open door under relatively light and bright cloudy skies and watched the tremendously dark storm move along to our east. I could have hopped right in and slammed the door if something started coming our way. This morning's fierce storm was 100 times more scary here at our house than yesterday's tornado. The Red River is up high and running swift and it looks ugly. The trees on the river sandbars that still had their heads above water yesterday are completely submerged this morning. In dry years, folks camp on those sandbars, sometimes for a week at a time, treating the sandbars like a little private island. Well, no one is going to be camping on them now, unless they are in a submarine. I'm hoping this morning's wicked line of storms used up a lot of the potential energy and maybe gives us a quieter day than forecast. Do I think that is likely? Probably not, but it is what I'm hoping for anyway. I need to go look at today's Convective Outlook to see what it says, but I don't want to. I'm afraid it all will be bad news for us. I think we ended up with 6.1" yesterday, bringing our May total so far to about 13" and our year-to-date total in the upper 20s. The flash flooding damage is massive, and we cancelled our Mother's Day cookout/dinner as Tim and Chris were out with the fire department working motor vehicle accidents, reporting flooded roads so our county commissioner could send out guys to barricade those roads, and participating in a high water rescue in which one of our firefighters(so proud of him!) came across a person about to be swept off a bridge and into a creek that would feeds into the Red River fairly close by and rescued her from the vehicle, and the rest of our firefighters rushed there to help him and to try to save the car from washing away (and also to try to prevent other people from driving into that flooded roadway). Other than that, nothing at all happened here in our neighborhood. I understand Hwy 77 in our part of the county may be iffy in a few places today, but there was a lot more damage in town including damaged or destroyed roadways, as far as I know, than out here in the sticks. We'll have our cookout and dinner this evening in perfect sunny weather and without rain falling on our heads and we'll be able to enjoy it more than we would have yesterday when the skies were black and rain wouldn't stop falling. The Red River is about to crest, or already has crested, at a little over 30'. For perspective, that means any equipment or cattle in the river bottom areas had to be moved to an elevation 6' higher in order to stay out of the flood waters. We saw farmers/ranchers with bottom land areas cutting and baling and moving their hay to higher ground last week, and it is a good thing, because some of those same bottom lands are under several feet of water now. I'm glad they were able to get that first cutting of hay harvested so they wouldn't lose it to the flood. The Red River is making folks nervous, and I am sure all of you likely have flooding rivers nearby that are making folks feel the same way. It has flooded much worse here before and still is 10-11 feet lower than its record flood stage reached in 1987 at the I35 bridge between Cooke County TX and Love County OK. I am worried about the Kingston area Marshall County as they usually get hit hard by all this water flowing downstream to Lake Texoma. I don't know how the plants in my garden are going to handle all this moisture. The couple of days of drying out that we have before the next rain event will help a little, but not enough. We'll know soon if the raised beds have saved the plants that are growing in them. I know everything is going to have all kinds of fungal diseases. I sprayed with Daconil a couple of weeks ago, but rain washes it off, so it isn't really helpful if it is raining every day, and that's doubly true if you're getting 3-6" a day. Some years are just this way and we just have to wait it out and see how our plants respond. It is hard to be unhappy about rain when we generally are in desperate need of more of it. I'm still not happy about the fact that it is coming in such ridiculous amounts. The weeks that typically bring our rainiest weather still lie ahead of us, and that's food for thought, isn't it? Amy, We were laughing about that same sort of issue the other day. Usually, we are dry and the clay contracts and we have a hard time getting doors to shut and lock properly. Tim is always having to make little adjustments to the hinges and locks to keep them working well. Beginning with last summer's and autumn's rainfalls, the clay expanded and the house was more or less back to normal and everything was working. Now, with continual rainfall for months on end, the constantly expanding clay has the doors getting harder to close again, but in an opposite way from when the problem is caused by contracting clay. You have to laugh about it or it would make a person crazy. We spend most of our time either extremely dry or extremely wet, and precious little of it "just right". I hope drier weather is coming. At our house, we how are just a smidgen under 35" of rainfall for this calendar year. Our mesonet station is about 4" behind us, but even so, it has almost a year's worth itself. Normal or average rainfall for us is 34" based on all the years the Mesonet station has existed or about 38 or 39" based on the 30-year-average. I cannot imagine what we'll end up for this entire year if the rainfall doesn't drop off drastically. George, Been there, done that, with the water trying to suck the boots off my feet. I'm gonna need a boat if it keeps raining. We have sunshine today, y'all, and have had it for at least a couple of hours so it is hot and muggy outside where Tim is mowing and indoors as well, where I've been in the kitchen blanching and freezing oodles of snap peas and snap beans. At least it is a good year for legumes. My food processing is up for the day, so now the kitchen can cool off but Tim will be out there making mud ruts in the lawn with the mower for a while yet. I hope to be outside in the garden tomorrow morning picking tomatoes, and probably more sugar snap peas. Of course, that depends on whether or not it rains tonight. There's tons of wildflowers blooming all over now, on both sides of the river, so at least the bees, butterflies and other flying things should be thrilled. This morning we had a blue bird world out in the yard with all sorts of the birds coming for their birdseed breakfast---we had indigo buntings (which I've only seen a handful of times, mostly in the last year), painted buntings, bluebirds and blue jays. There were tons of other birds, most notably mourning doves and cardinals, but I was enthralled by the many kinds of blue birds all visiting at the same time. Bruce, Thanks for letting us know how you and Janet are doing. We missed y'all at the Spring Fling, but we knew you were busy dealing with the aftermath of Mother Nature's weather temper tantrum. I am so pleased to hear how much recovery progress you've already made, and doubly pleased you have reclamation crews coming in so quickly. I believe your hard work and quick action will save some items you otherwise might have lost. It is impressive what y'all have managed to do so quickly, and it is inspiring for the rest of us who someday might face similar issues---y'all will be the shining example of what we need to do if we're ever hit by the same type of weather destruction. You know, here in OK in the springtime, anything can happen and it usually does happen to someone. I still cannot believe it happened to y'all. Hang in there and keep smiling and keep growing. I know you need your garden more than ever this year because it is such a great stress reliever and y'all certainly have had a lot of stress these last few days. Dawn

Checking in here from E. TN in Knoxville. We had a storm cell roll through yesterday evening that was rather destructive. No tornado, just straight line winds with lots of trees and power lines down. My DD and I were at the ballpark when it hit. We rode it out in my vehicle. Boy, that was fun! We are expecting nasty weather again tomorrow.

Arkansas and West TN are looking scary right now.

Rebecca, Those straight line winds can be as destructive as a tornado. A few years ago, my DD's roof was taken off by what was determined to be straight line winds. It happened during the night and the train sound woke up my daughter so she gathered the kids into the bathroom.

Here in Indiana we've been under tornado watch all afternoon and evening and flash flood warning til tomorrow. It's been raining but nothing very bad.

I'm in Northwest Arkansas. We've had severe flash flooding here. Our house was filled at one point, and our yard had a river running through it. There have been 9 deaths due to flooding, so we're (my family, I have 7 kids) lucky that all we had is some property damage. In the big scheme of things, that isn't bad at all.
I hope everyone else is doing OK! Stay safe & dry!

We're fine. I was up at 5am with the tornado sirens, putting shoes on sleepy (and grouchy I might add) teenagers, as there were three tornadoes signatures on radar withing thirty miles of our house. I don't know if they touched down to do damage or not, but all that happened here is my climber rose broke a cane at the base, and my iris got the snot beat out of them.

We had tornadoes in SE TN and NW GA this morning. No fatalities thank goodness. Lots of damage to buildings and trees. We are going to get another round in the next couple of hours.

It's about 3:30 pm in central North Carolina and we are under a tornado watch - along with about 30 other counties in NC. It is windy here at times, but so far no rain and no tornado warnings. This has been the windiest spring (including Feb. and March) that I have ever experienced in my area. And it's not even hurricane season yet!

Round 2 for the day brought more tornadoes to the area. We fortunately did not have any close by. We did have quarter size hail for a while though. Round 3 to come later this evening.

We had a bad line of storms early this morning. Blew some siding off the house and blew over a tree in neighbor's yard. Then it got sunny, so we cleaned up the tree, patched the siding, and now the second round is starting. Tornado hit the hospital in Cullman (where my parent's live) and one passed over their house and hit a few miles away. Supposed to get bad here about the time I get off work, so may spend some extra time here.

I'll check in when I get home.

Round 3 brought more tornadoes and 1 fatality. Hail was the size of baseballs. Trees down everywhere to the point that the Emergency Management Services has asked for civilian help in using chain saws. I live in Cleveland, TN.

Last round has brought many many casualties. One whole city, Ringgold, GA was virtually wiped out. Parts of the county that I live in are devastated. Death count is rising. Thankfully, my neighborhood just had some downed trees and hail damage.

Well, I am home. So far 3 hospitals have been hit, Brownsferry Nuclear Plant was hit by lightening much of the northern part of the state is without power. Close to 50 dead and 100s injured. Hackelburg, AL is all but wiped out, Tuscaloosa is unrecognizable, Cullman is severely damaged, Birmingham was hit by at least 1 huge tornado. We have heard from all of our family and everyone is ok, but so many aren't. It is a very sad day.

Hoot! I drove my son the 45 minutes to MTSU today for his 12:40 class just because it looked to be going to rain so hard. We joked around, because it was really only a light rain the whole way. I haven't driven him anywhere since he got his new car last October. I had to go pick him back up after an evening final at 7pm. I got there, and he had his shoes off and his pant legs rolled up over his knees. It had rained more. He collapsed into the car and told me "letting you drive me was the best decision I've made in my whole life!" He told me about the flooding on campus, two foot rivers streaming across campus--we drove to the parking lot by his dorm and he showed me the new lake where he always parks, other cars submerged up to their windows. There were several kids who got hold of kayaks. Heh, he thinks we're psychic.

He was pretty sweet, leaning forward in his seat as we turned into out street. "Yeah! There it is! Safe and sound."

Jackie, glad to hear you are safe!

It got rough here after dark. Lot of hail damage and flooding in the area. I was lying in bed thinking about the huge rotting maple tree in my neighbor's yard about 40 feet from my head. My house looks like a matchbox next to this tree. I REALLY wish they would have it removed!

We are under another tornado watch this morning until noon. Other than the rattling of my 100 year old windows waking me up and traffic light problems, we have not had any major damage that I could see on my way to work this morning. Greensboro next door had hail last night, then the major storm cells drifted north and east of me. I hope Jennifer and family are all right.

Please pray that these horrendous storms cease! Many locations are still recovering from the previous storm when they get socked again. My heart goes out to all of you here and the areas hit so badly.

I hope this is the end of this terrible weather. We are quite lucky here in southwestern Ontario. We have just had way too much rain and there have been a number of tornado watches but nothing beyond that. Praying for all of you affected by this.

I am so glad everyone is okay. The damage has been so severe - and the weather channel says that May could be worse! Has anyone heard from Jennifer?? Along the front range in Colorado we have just had a little rain and wind. Amazingly, our big concern is for fire danger! My son lives near Vail and it just continues to snow there ... Everyone continue to be safe - I keep praying for everyone.

I just called Jennifer and they are all doing fine. All they had was a little rain. Baby is sleeping thru most nights, Cynthia, Jason, and Amanda love their new sister and are helping Mom.

Our county is up to 9 fatalities now with many people still unaccounted for. My husband and I have been out all day with a chain saw crew trying to help get trees out of houses. We had 5 tornadoes in the county. I feel so fortunate to have survived.

Thanks Teresa! That's what I was thinking, the really bad storms were near her area, although nothing like the southern states who are getting hit very hard. Cheery news she had a girl and she is sleeping :).

Jackie-you are lucky! So sad for all those who are going thru this. Keeping all in my prayers.

Sorry to have worried everyone! We've had only rain and some wind...nothing significant... so I never thought to check in with everyone.

There was a tornado (a rarity) viewed by friends last night at rush hour about 20 miles north of here, but I don't think it touched down.

The kids and new baby are doing fine! Everyone settling in to their new roles, and baby Melanie is only waking up once per night, so MOm here feels quite human! I'll try to post pictures soon.

My heart goes out to all of you in the areas threatened by these unusually hard storms. We have been blessed and pray that all gets better for others. Looking a the pictures of the devastation I can't begin to understand how one can't feel blessed to have survived. Alb. has had more then their share of tragic storms in the past few years. I know that others are also suffering.

I've been so worried about Beverly in Sylacauga. I'm so glad they are okay up in Cullman. What a disaster. My heart goes out to all those folks. Such a year.

So sad reading about all the devastation in the States. Glad that most people I know are OK. It doesn't seem that long ago when Australia was having lots of floods and Cyclones and bushfires. Our TV News has been broadcasting scenes of the devastation caused by the tornadoes.

We had bad weather with hail in our area about 3 weeks ago. The news reported 16,000 acres of onions destroyed. We were expecting the severe weather again, but all we had was 1 inch of badly needed rain. It is so sad watching the news, the economy is so bad that I think many will have a hard time starting over. The news interviewed a man last night that had not eaten since breakfast the previous day. Prayers to the world!!!!!
