Beware of Bad Bulbs
Comments (45)And imagine, a tiny bulb that shrivelled to almost nothing, Exotic Star, is bringing a scape. Amazing. It is in the brink of dying, yet, it will still give out one last swan song... But I will take care of it. I will make sure that it survives, even though I am not too crazy about Exotic Star. Jodi, be prepared that Exotic Star tends to wilt very quickly. At least mine lost its flowers in a matter of days, and only gave out two flowers per scape just like it's not so distant predecessor, Papilio....See MoreWe Don't Know
Comments (34)Title: In utero and lactational exposure of Long-Evans rats to ammonium perchlorate (AP) disrupts ovarian follicle maturation. Authors: Baldridge, Monika G.; Stahl, Rebecca L.; Gerstenberger, Shawn L.; Tripoli, Vicki; Hutz, Reinhold J. Authors affiliation: Department of Biological Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee, WI, USA. Published in: Reproductive Toxicology, volumn 19, pages 155-161, (2004). Abstract: "Ammonium perchlorate (AP) is a powerful oxidizer manufd. almost exclusively for the aerospace industry. AP salts are also used in airbags, flares, fertilizers, enamels and paints. As a result of widespread industrial use, AP has become a persistent environmental contaminant of drinking water in several U.S. states. AP ion disrupts the trapping of iodide as well as facilitates the discharge of unorganified iodide from the thyroid gland. Such disturbances in thyroid hormone concns. during crit. periods of development are then known to cause profound reproductive and developmental defects, since thyroid hormones modulate both follicular development and steroidogenesis and affect estrogen metab. and receptor. This study was designed (1) to det. whether exposure to a low or high concn. of AP (LAP, HAP) exerts detrimental effects on follicle maturation in the Long-Evans hooded rat and (2) to det. whether the modulatory effects of AP can be ameliorated by levo-thyroxine sodium (T4) supplementation. Animals were treated via deionized drinking water on GD 7-21 with LAP (0.4 mg/kg/day) or HAP (4.0 mg/kg/day). Half of each group was also given T4 supplements via drinking water on GD 7-21. Female pups were sacrificed on postnatal days 24/25, and the ovaries were excised, fixed for histol. and analyzed. The anal. included a count, measurement and classification of preantral and antral follicles in the greatest cross-sectional area of the ovary. The results indicated that treatment with the HAP significantly reduced the no. of preantral follicles 100,000 mm2 size classes. In ovaries treated with the LAP, we obsd. no significant decrease in preantral follicles of any size class and only a significant redn. in the largest antral follicles. T4 only circumvented the effect on the no. of small preantral and antral follicles; however, a significant diminution in the antral follicle no. persisted in the mid-sized (HAP) and large (LAP, HAP)-sized classes. These data support the hypothesis that AP reduces the no. of preantral and antral follicles in certain size classes in rats exposed during a crit. period of development, and that T4 can attenuate the effects of AP on small preantral and antral follicles, but not on medium or large antral follicles."...See MoreStill don't have a fence (HOA related)
Comments (27)abbysmom, I agree with your suspicion that the HOA is just messin' wit' you. What I would suggest is to find a contractor that will do the fence that you want which complies with the govt. code, arrange for installation, and have an atty draft a letter to the HOA (AND copy the state govt dept which oversees this) stating that "In compliance with state code blah blah blah, my client will be erecting a 5' tall (or whatever) pool fence." I also agree with the other poster who said to include in there that the HOA would be liable for legal fees and damages in the event you are found to be in the right. A $150-200 attorney-generated strongly-worded letter will hopefully make them back down without the need for litigation. What a bunch of morons. Perfect example of "power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Your situation is exactly why we refuse to ever live in a subdivision. Best of luck to you, and keep us posted....See MorePlease Beware of Plastic Tubing on Refrigerator Waterline.
Comments (22)My husband installed our fridge (with icemaker) two days ago in our newly built home (due to move in there in a few days). Builder came to install mirrors and heard hissing as he opened the interior garage door. Saw water on the hardwood. The plastic tubing from the icemaker was off and water was spraying. Will need new carpeting (incl padding, subfloor, hardwood, drywall, lower cabinets, stair railing and newels, door frames to the pantry and laundry room, and probably new tile in the laundry room. Brand new GE fridge delivered the day before it was installed. Husband has installed fridges before without issue, not sure if they had this type of tubing. A friend found this online: We bought a Samsung fridge about a year ago. The model number is RB215LABP. The problem we have been having is that the tube in the back where you hook it up to the water for the ice machine, keeps blowing off the back. We don't know how to fix it. Several times, I have come home from work to find an inch of water all over my floors because it's blown off and been that way all day. My husband has reattached it, turned the water pressure on the valve down and still, it continues to blow off the back. The hose seems to be the right size...I don't know what the problem is. Please help. Tags Refrigerators , Samsung , Appliances 2 Answers from these members: Manage My Life The reason the tubing blows out of the inlet tube in the cabinet is the inlet tube is freezing up and then the pressure builds up and blows the tubing out of the inlet. Usually the thing that causes the tube to freeze is the water valve seeps water when it should be turned off. This slow trickle of water freezes as it enters the freezer and stops up the inlet tube. Not sure what caused this (yet). Hopefully the insurance through our mortgage bank will take care of it asap. The carpet is thoroughly soaked. Water ran down the walls of the open stairway to the basement, wood in basement ceiling dripping water, basement flooded, etc. Merry Christmas! :(...See Moreswim_dude
