I have a sister that wears them all the time. You would never know it, though. She has them cut and styled at her salon and has learned several tricks to making them look natural. I don't think hers are natural hair, but they look great. She had very thin hair (so do I) and had been bleaching it since she was about 21--she's 73 now.

One of the tricks she uses is to "dust" them with powder. Wigs are very shiny and most people's hair isn't shiny after a certain age. She has 4 or 5 wigs now--all blond and cut in the same style, just different shades. She also darkens a tad just at the part because even natural blonds are a little darker there. I think she said she does it with eye liner or ?? She still pulls some of her own hair out on the top and sides.

She looks like a million dollars and 10 years younger. So yeah, I may have to do it myself soon!

I had a short curly wig maybe 25 years ago. Pretty much the same color as my own natural hair, but my own hair is thin and straight also. With the wig and sunglasses on, I felt like a celebrity. Not sure where the wig is. Might have disappeared during a clean-out over the years.

I bought a human hair wig in the early 60s. It matched my hair perfectly. They were the rage then and the advantage was when I wanted my hair to look nice for a special occasion, I just wore my wig. A friend asked to borrow it and she cut it short! I was so shocked. End of the wig.

I had one about 30 years ago. It was the same color as my hair then, which was brown. It was synthetic and I doubt if any one ever knew it was a wig. I was working as a CNA at the hospital, and was often on call. It was perfect for that. Actually, I still have it somewhere. I'm mostly gray now and if I wore it no body would recognize me!

LOL, Linda! I forgot about the 60's wigs, falls and hairpieces. I had some of all 3! I ususally wore my hair fairly short, so my favorite was a human hair fall that matched my hair. Voila--long hair. Loved it! There are way too many pictures floating around with me and my false hair :-)

No even when I was doing chemo, I didn't buy a wig. I think they are hot and uncomfortable. I tried wearing them back when they were popular and just hated them. I hate the way they look too. you can nearly always tell that someone is wearing a wig if for no other reason than they are so styled. Yuk....What I did use/wear and enjoy were hair pieces...as in comb your hair back, add a hairpiece and you are good to go...lots of different styles and they never looked wiggy.

I bought 3 when I lost my hair. I hated them. They looked okay but were uncomfortable.

I can't stand the weight of my own hair which is why I keep it short so a wig is out of the question. Doubt I'd wear one should I lost my hair if I had chemo.

With that said, I too got into the hair craze of the 60s and with my babysitting money, bought a long, human hair fall. My own hair was short at the time and matched the fall fairly well. I wore that fall in jr. high and up to my sophomore year in high school.

I don't have "get up and go" hair...it takes curling and sytling every day, if I want to go out of the house.

I used to do it every day even if I stayed home, just because I wanted to look the best I could for Denny.

But now that I'm older it is so thin that it is quite a chore. I still work on it to go someplace but poor Denny gets to see me "as I am" a lot more than I'd like .

I've talked for a few years now that I want one...especially on those days he asks me if I want to go for breakfast. It would be so much easier.

And I'm all for "so much easier"

I'm still waiting to win the lotto..or someting so I can afford to buy one. I don't want anything that looks "dimestore" (as we used to call cheap things in the old days)

I got one several years ago in a short curly style because at the time I had long curly hair and was considering going short, I did not want to do it with out having an idea of how it would look on me, my face shape etc. And I wanted opinions from hubby and friends before going under the scissors. The first time I wore it out to a gathering with my friends they darn near fainted LOL. It was hilarious to see the expressions. Every one of them said OMG you did not cut your long hair off!! My husband knew it was a wig but he so badly did not want me to cut my hair.

I hated wearing it, it was not comfortable and it was hot and itchy even though it was one of the very light weight ones with the breathable mesh. I would not be able to wear one daily.

Now many years later and I do have my hair cut short and it is much easier to deal with and cooler too. Hubby got used to it LOL

I have several really nice wigs... and they are awesome for those "bad hair days" or when you get a call to have lunch and you have 20 minutes to get a shower and get ready. All of them are quite pricey and extremely natural looking... and folks that don't know me well, have no idea I wear a wig from time to time.. My friends all know simply because I will have longer hair one day, and really short the next and then of course there are the different colors along with the different styles... All of mine are very light and very cool... I can't stand a hot wig.. and the cheaper ones do tend to be very warm... All of mine feel quite natural and sometimes I forget I am wearing a wig at all..

To me they are convenient and fun...

I'm pretty close to going the wig route...lots of my co-workers have developed alopecia in their later years...makes me think it's the high altitude flying or just flying in general...my hair is sooo thin...I have a friend who wears one all the time and it looks great but it cost her megabucks...not some 39.99 one...(she paid close to 500.00...not what I wanted to hear but it sure looks good...)

My sketchy hair over the top could suggest that it might be a good idea for me to get one, but I haven't yet fallen for that temptation (and doubt that I will).

My sister is a hairdresser. We had "Ladies Night" on Thursday. A bunch of women showing up for the "New do", wine and champagne.

She'd just gone to a seminar for hairpieces and hit me with it. Really a cute do.

.....then....we decided to go clubbing (before it was the thing to do).

Some guy hit on me, telling me what wonderful hair I had. He said it would look beautiful spread across his pillow in the morning.

Enough champagne, a beer or two, I ripped out the pins holding the hairpiece, tossed it in his lap and told him to call me in the morning if it was good for him.

My sister......"You better get that freakin' hairpiece back before we leave here". I found it in his chair.

Liz, I got several of mine when Bob and I went to Florida a few years back... I put nearly 2 grand on my plastic buying 4 of them...It was a really nice boutique specializing is high end "hair".... They knocked off $125 from each one because I bought 4 .... The others I got in Jackson TN... but they aren't quite as nice but really still quite natural looking... and all are as light as a feather....They do require care and I keep them on forms...I have a special shampoo and conditioner that I use on them.... None of them require any work on my part. I just wash them and actually hang them on the line to dry outside.... shake them out and then brush them gently into whatever style I want to wear... The four I can brush and comb just like they were my own hair... a touch of hair spray (for these wigs) and I am good to go... I don't wear them all the time.... just when I want to look especially nice or when I am in a hurry...

I can't even really feel them on after a few minutes... and they fit snug enough so that I can ride with the windows all open in my car...

Wasting $39.99 on a wig is just that.. a total waste.. and in wigs, you get what you pay for..

Roco, my mom told me years ago that before she got married, some guy put the moves on her. He flirted and groped. After enduring several comments about her great breasts, she pulled out her falsies, handed them to him and said "if you like them so much, they're yours." LOL

If my hair got really thin and I couldn't make it look decent I might go for a wig. I wore them a good deal when I lost all my hair with chemo. I loved that I could get ready in no time and my hair looked great.

I can't imagine wearing one over a full head of hair though - especially in warm weather. It would be like wearing a hat - too hot and sweaty for me. I avoided wearing a wig with no hair in the summer - as much as possible.

I remember in the early 70s my Mom - just for fun - got a wig & put on false eyelashes. My dad just about fell over! This is after she had 8 kids (last baby in 1969).

I have had short - above the ears - hair for a long time.

A funny wig story - I met my DH at a Halloween party - I was dressed as a mermaid with a long blond (tacky) wig. When we met for real 1 week later I had short hair & he was shocked - but we got married 12 months after!

in answer to the original question, I have 3 friends who have Trichillomania (sp?) who wear wigs. Trich is an obsession with hair pulling.

Hi, Ladies...I have thinning hair and my last haircut is way too short, so a friend went with me yesterday and I bought a wig mostly for when we go dancing a couple times a week. I wear my own hair in a 'pixie' style and I wanted one that looked like my own. I tried on several, but the first one was perfect for me, even the color. My hair is a silvery (almost white) shade and quite shiny and healthy for a 67-year-old. Perfect match and everyone agreed they couldn't tell it was a wig (including my husband)!! Wigs aren't what they were in the 60s and 70s. Mine weighs about half an ounce, a lace cap, so it's not hot and heavy like the old ones. It is synthetic and only $129. Will give it a trial run tonight and since I haven't been to this particular dance place in several weeks, it'll be interesting to see if anyone notices.
