Does anyone know the name of this block?

I was recently watching an movie set in the 1800's and there was a quilt that caught my eye.

It was beautiful and the blocks were rather large and seem to move all over the quilt.

I quickly sketched a picture and then later drew it on 1/4 grid paper.

Here's a pictue of the drawing, and one I colored in.

These aren't the colors on the quilt, because I couldn't remember them by the time I got around to drawing the pattern.

Does anyone recognise the pattern?

I'd love to know the name of it.

The show I was watching was Love Comes Softly.

I find I'm always watching the background of shows and looking at the quilts used in the sets.

Strange, I never did that before I started piecing quilts.

Doris, you are not the only one who notices quilts in movies and on TV. I do that all the time. Not just quilts but anytime I see a repetative pattern.

For this one, I'd say strip piece the small squares, cut them and offset them to make the triangles and then just make HST with solids. It looks like it would make a very nice quilt.

I do see what you mean now. Apparently she didn't realize that you are supposed to turn the margins under before you do the blanket stitch. Now I see why you are reluctant to turn them into a quilt. I looked in a couple of my block reference books and couldn't find it. It could be a pattern that she made up herself. I like it and could see it done with the leaves in different autumn colors. Or done as is with yo-yo centers as someone else suggested. If you like the blocks enough, you could make a "tribute" quilt, replicating it in modern repros. Annie

The 1st 2 & the 2 below it make "Broken Dishes"
you see it quite a bit in old quilts.
I love looking at old quilts in movies too.

I started to say "Broken Dishes" also. Have you seen the great quilt on the wall at the end of "Baby Boom?" Looks like it was done in blacks, grays, and reds - love it!

It is a pinwheel varation,,,I have seen it called Lady of the Lake...Its pretty,,,I saw it on there too,,,Hallmark channel,,,love that channel,,,Im a Murder She Wrote re run fan.

I looked up Broken Dishes quilt block. I compared it to the windmill pattern and they look the same. Sometimes it is
frustrating when a pattern has more than one name.

One time I was in a restaurant bathroom and noticed an interesting tile pattern on the floor. My husband thought something was wrong because I was taking so long in the bath room. He laughed when I told him I was drawing the tile pattern that is on the floor.

I love this old fashioned pattern. I'm getting ready to quilt one now. This is my Broken Dishes but I used sashing between. Some of the old ones put the blocks together without sashing.

I agree, The above pattern and Lady of the Lake looks similiar, but I don't believe it is either.
I wonder if you pieced two out of 4 units in the block it would be called a pieced pinwheel?

That's the name that kind of sticks in my head.

I love the colors of your quilt. And the border sets it off beautifully.

I almost missed it here. It is too beautiful to miss. How about putting a picture over in the gallery? Just a suggestion. I know some people have issuses with that but I always look there to see if there is anything new.
