Rebar poking through pebble....Pool 10 months old...

So...I've been noticing a rust colored spot on the side of the pool about a foot above the bottom since Monday. Only reason I noticed it was because I was brushing the pool and putting in chemicals. When I saw it, I thought it was a stain because I tried brushing it over and over again and it wouldn't go away. So I started searching for rust colored spots, algae, etc. online to see if maybe there was some type of growth or something in the pool. I found there is a brown algae and thought it could be that even though this looked like rust. Next day...couldn't find the spot. Hmmm...maybe adding the chemicals got rid of whatever it was. Wednesday came along and the spot was back. Tried brushing it again to no avail. Yesterday, I got in the pool and checked it out. I could brush the rust colored spot away, but when I did, I saw the rebar poking through. :(

Has anyone had this happen before? I'll be contacting the pool builder and seeing what can be done. I'll also be checking the contract again to see if it is covered. They said the covered the shell if it popped out...hopefully they cover rebar poking through.

There should be no rebar anywhere near the plaster layer. They should have seen this after the gunnite went in. I would think that they will have to chisel out that area, grind down the rebar then patch and reapply plaster and pebble. You cannot have exposed rebar in a pool. The chemicals will eat away at it. Rust is just the first sign of that.

I had a friend have something similar happen....only it wasnt rebar, but a nail. How did the nail get in there, who knows....must have happened in the pebble process. The pebble tec company came back and repaired the spot. Hopefully, your problem is an easy fix.

I said I'd try to get a pic of my newest attempt at hassle-free tomato support. A little walk-through-- One 54" heavy-duty tomato cage(good for first 4-5 feet of growth) Then, when the branches are about a foot above the top ring -- Three 8 foot 2x2's pounded in ground at a slight angle and about a foot out from the top ring. Then, 1x2's cut to length and screwed into the 2x2's about a foot higher than the top ring of cage. Another foot of growth, another set of 1x2's, and so on. Exterior grade conduit can be metal or a poly product (I'm not sure if it's polybutaline or polyethylene.) There are different thicknesses (both pipe diameter and wall thickness; for our plant uses, the wall thickness is the most important. The other thing, really a stretch, is to see if you have a metal scrapyard anywhere near. A place that does ship repairs. There are stainless steel rods 1/4" thick that have phenomenal (to me) strength. We bought them to use in a hatch for our boat, so if we landed on it accidentally, we wouldn't fall through and down eight feet. When I went down the Industrial Metals of the South in NOLA, they told me 1/4" would be strong enough and they were right. I had a use for the leftovers that involved bending. Couldn't do it. We ended up cutting and welding. So there may be some metal options at a salvage yard that are beyond what we think of in a trellis...ask the guys at the yard...they do know their strengths of materials.

I hadn't used bone meal until last year after having dogs dig up a newly planted bed years ago searching for the bone. I decided to try it last year in a new bed. I got about 99% bloom in that new bed with plants I ordered last spring. This has never happened before, and I attribute it to the bone meal. What I got was bone meal powder and not the granulated form I used years ago. This may make a difference in the way the plant absorbs the fertilizer. I have never seen such weird ratios as 0-13-18 available in garden centers or co-ops. I have been having trouble finding 5-10-10. The lowest in large bags has been 10-10-10. Here lately during the summer, I have been shaking rose fertilizer (9-18-9) from the canister. It has been doing well in keeping fans green and not bleached out in the heat. There has been summer growth as well and not dormancy. My last application was in July and won't be adding this in the fall for fear of fast growth at freeze-up.

The mites will likely not go deep in the bin, nor will much else but the worms. One thing I read was that if you are really upset about non-worm visible lifeforms in the bin you can do one of several things... One (which I prefer) is to put your bins outside where they belong if you don't like living with extra lifeforms and micromanaging a bin that is taking up the most expensive area of your property. Another time proven technique is to ignore your boxed dirtfarm so that less hours of your week are dedicated to worrying about something that is taking care of its self. If plan A and B there don't work... You can take advantage of the fact that worms will dive for cover if you dump extra water in the bin, and all these mites, ants, pillbugs, and whatever else, will surface... Where you will be waiting with a grin and a blowtorch. I've found the blowtorch method to be highly effective at reducing the populations of insects that gravitate to one location. A reduced population of insects will quickly breed back up to swarming strength in the protected shelter of a house though, and since I understand that my ancestors differentiated indoors from outdoors by what one expects to encounter there, I keep my bin in the chicken coop (unheated, Zone 5). Beyond that, the larger your bin, the less things that can possibly go wrong with it. If it's deep, it can't overheat or freeze. If it has high volume, it can hold more worms than can be preyed upon and excess can be taken for whatever you want. If it has much room, the worms can separate into their personal favorite locations and run away or toward hot composting locations. If your bin is large enough, you can't over or underfeed it simply because the worms can express their natural survivability, which they can't do when you keep them in a little test-tube bin indoors.

Of course it can be rust and rebar related. Rust spots will brush off and then come back in a few days. It is quite a normal process. The fact that it is there is not normal. It is most likely a tie wire on the rebar that did not get cut. Almost impossible to see unless to have a good QC guy prior to plaster. Many pools are plastered with exposed rebar. They simply paint it and plaster over it. The result is a piece of steel only an inch or two below the surface and if there is an imperfection in the surface, which pebble tec can easily have, you can get a spot.

Yes, nails are all over the pool in construction. Concrete nails are used to secure bender board for tile and coping installation. Could be that too. If it's a tie wire, and you catch it early, it will not hit your rebar, but once it does, it will start corrosion there and it can get ugly.

Have the plaster company check it out. They can usually chip it out and patch.

Thanks everyone. I'll definitely be calling the pool builder and have it taken care of. I just hope they can patch it without it looking different from the rest of the pool.

How much would a repair job for exposed rebar be? The pool is one and a half years old.
