update on disaster restoration paint colors

Hey,

Just thought I'd share where we are in deciding on paint colors...

First the big news: there is a Benjamin Moore Aura *exterior* paint now! We sampled some in semi-gloss and it *rocks*. It goes on like an intense fondant icing, is the best I can describe it. And it dries super fast, even in a dark dark color (the trim). I can't recommend it highly enough. Can't wait to paint the door :)

Now the *color* itself is something I'm still working on. The original Aura color sample (silhouette) turned out to be too light for me; I'm either going to have it darkened or have a sample of another color I had made darkened. still working on the trim.

The Sandy Hook Grey showed up as washed out on our house, so I went back and got 50% more colorant in it; it looks better, but still somewhat wispy, so I'm going to go back Monday and get the second 50% to make it a total of 200% formula to see what we get there. The general tone of the color is perfect for what we want, though. So we've got that and the red for the door, just need the exact right trim and we're set.

And after considering the next door colors, turns out our neighbors are painting their house in a few weeks! They were the barn red house; they're going for a blue green. I showed them how different the S.H. Gray looks on an actual wall, so they tried their choice, a somewhat pastel-ish green (will be a big change) on their wall (over primer) and really didn't like it.

So nothing is simple, but with luck it will work out. I'll post a pic of the final color choices before we buy in volume (now seems that if we go with the contractor we like, he can't work us in until late June--which is actually fine with me, I don't want someone who's really available). Why do I always do this?! I remember something I wanted to say *right* after I click send...

Also, a big thanks to amysrq, who suggested Sandy Hook Gray all the way back in the second or third post of that book-length thread :) I always say that the right choice will stand up to scrutiny, and that color sure did. Thanks, amy!

Hmmm...we'll work out something--maybe Friday? And you know what, I meant to add that I was really underwhelmed by the experience of painting with the MoorGuard. Are Exterior paints generally thinner than interior? I then went in and put on a coat of EK (ICI-Dulux) interior semi-gloss on some window trim and it was a completely different experience. The Aura was more like the ICI. I'm wondering if there's a better exterior paint that I could mix the Sandy Hook Gray in...I may take the sample in to ICI-Dulux and ask them to mix it in one of their exterior finishes. Any thoughts on that? What exterior paint do folks favor?

Excellent, spanky, thanks!! I'm wondering about the windows--I found out that the tiny windows have a somewhat -- functional? -- trim, whereas there are also full-panel aluminum-framed (we don't have any other aluminum) panes that we could have as the entire top 1/4 of the garage...don't know how they all will price out. Say, haberichter, could you share relative prices? We were told this would be similar to the 9700, but I'm dying to have more specific info...do you have any info you can share? dtinbna, if we were to get the 9700 we'd *not* get the faux hinges etc...just the simplest panels. I've seen the look on a number of original-to-the-house garage doors on homes of our vintage. We very well may be stuck with the 9700 if it comes in way higher than our insurance payout, as we've already decided to put extra money we weren't planning to spend on upgrading the roof shingles beyond what they'd been, and replacing our skylights which badly needed it too, since the roof is being done. Mayaswellitis is setting in... hilltop, I'll be hoping the windows come in affordable. Although if they don't, which do you think we should go with--the windowless commercial or the 9700 Westfield with the simplest stiles/rails, no faux hinges/handles? And amy, I know the higher price tag would be wonderful just to nod and say "make it so"...but we've done that with the roof, which is structurally going to be much more important than the door (with limited funds the needs have to be triaged, as it were--we're watching MASH :))...so if you can bite the bullet and imagine this, which would you go with: the windowless commercial door or the 9700?

gracie - i'm going to leak out my secret early.. i'm picking up the chair tonight!!!! :) :) almost embarrassed to mention that now since i made such a deal about this or that, not both. the vehicle repairs etc ended up not being near as much as we had anticipated. restoring windows with lead paint?

First you might want to do a little research on lead paint and at what point it becomes a hazard. Unless every wall,door,door casing,floor molding,and ceiling has been replaced there is lead paint all over your house once it has been sealed and painted over unless a child is actually eating your windows the hazard is not there. Lead paint becomes a hazard when it is peeling or when it is being sanded from air born dust. Read the below link which also contains a link from the CDC paying close attention to at least the following statements. Government studies reveal that children become lead-poisoned primarily by hand-to-mouth lead dust ingestion, and only rarely through eating old lead-based paint chips. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) reports show that well-maintained surfaces containing lead paint do not present a health hazard. Interim controls such as "in-place management" have been recognized as valid methods of preventing lead exposure and encapsulation technology provides a feasible, effective abatement strategy for the permanent correction of residential lead hazards. I have been watching for your update Fly because I also can't wait to see the end results. You are really doing it the right way by sampling and then sampling some more.

flyleft when you add that much colorant to your base paint, you're changing the ratio of pigment and binders. On a wall in your house, I wouldn't worry about it that much - you could paint again fairly easily if here was a problem. But OUTSIDE you could be asking for trouble and if that paint fails for some reason, first of all it's a huge deal to repaint an entire house but also, you'll probably have negated any warranty B/M might have offered on the cost of the product (no paint warranty covers labor cost).

Thankfully you know the direction you want to head now with your color. Maybe you can work towards existing colors that would be made in the proper base for the depth you want, rather than adding too much pigment to a light base. You've worked so hard at this, I'd just hate to see you have a problem down the road.

Thanks you all--and dlm, that's a great point--the paint store people were very aware of it wrt the trim paint, which is partly why they recommended the Aura instead of a P&L Accolade sample. The Aura is *completely* amazing in its quick-dry time even in LRVs of around 4. When I go back I'll ask about the risks of doing a double-pigment on the S.H. Gray. Maybe I can get that color in the sample quart, and then have it formulated in a darker base? so we won't have to put as much pigment in it? Or we'll look for close cousins.
