Under cabinet range hood installation advice
Comments (9)Our Zephyr Cyclone range hood is now installed. No assistants were needed. The trick was to screw and tape the 3.25 x 10 to 6" round adapter pipe to the new hood so that when lifted into position the pipe pokes through the wall and supports most of the hood weight. By holding the front of the hood up to the cabinet bottom the 1" electrical shielded electrical cable access hole and the four support screw holes were marked. Using a 9" drill bit extender I was able drill the the support holes with the hood in place. The hood was functioning by the time dinner needed to be cooked. DW's only critical comment was that the two 40 watt lamps were too bright on the high setting. They are not recessed enough to be completely shielded by the hood for shorter folks, so they become a glare source. A PAR 20 50W halogen lamp also works in the hood fixtures but sticks out about an inch rather than being almost flush like the 40 watt non-halogen bulbs supplied with the hood. To finish tomorrow I will install a new Broan exterior duct cap with damper. There is an impressive outflow of air at all three fan speeds as felt from the outside vent opening. The lower two speeds should be adequate for nearly all cooking activities and the noise is acceptable. If we had billowing smoke then the 650CFM third speed would be welcome. The prior hood was rated 180CFM and was very loud at anything beyond the minimum speed. This black hood looks great with our new black Electrolux slide-in range. The 22.5 inch hood depth matches the 22" maximum front burner distance from the back wall....See MoreHow to set cabinets around an under-cabinet range hood?
Comments (2)What you are talking about is staggered height cabinets. Its a matter of taste: some people like it, some people don't. In some kitchens, I think it looks fine. As for a single cabinet being higher over the range hood, I tend to think it looks like the cabinet was moved to make the range hood fit, because I've seen people do that when they get an OTR microwave: it hangs down too low because its bigger than the old hood, so they pop the cabinet up to compensate.. However if it is part of an overall design of staggered cabinets, it can look nice, and look intentional....See MoreCabinet Guy says I cannot have a Wood Hood :(
Comments (14)Is it a gas range? Depending on the range specs, any combustibles must be at least 30" above the cooking surface - sometimes 36". Depending on your specs, that would leave the total hood height of 21" - 27" (leaving room for crown). It can definitely be done. I design hoods based around specific blowers all the time and there are plenty of blowers available that would fit in that height. It is not difficult to do. Often, I just provide panels/moldings/valances and the contractors build the hoods themselves. Check the range specs. Make sure they are adhered to. Building inspectors in my area will fail homeowners if clearances are not met. Good luck....See Moredrawer size under 48" range top/cooktop
Comments (4)I chose to have big drawers since I never had problems with my 36" and two drawers side by side is inefficient with storage capacity. You have to allocate 1.5" for the cabinet sides and then more for the slides allowance. My drawers width were only 45" after all my allowances and I used industrial slides rated for 500lbs with stronger bottoms. My usable width is 43 3/4. Those puppies should hold up. Your split drawers should be about 20" usable width each if the cab maker squeeze every inch to the max. If you do inset then that may drop down to 15" each depending on slides and installation....See Morebreezygirl
