I disagree, I have modern and the Napoleon stove and we love the look. It's very similar to the one above. I like mixing things up.

I think a stove might be problematic in your bedroom ( I dunno, I see bumping into it on the way to the bathroom in the middle of the night)

But, did you see these? I don't picture the one above with your walnut slab.

Both the stoves and the linear type framed fireplaces will extend about 20" into the room. There are direct vent wall hung gas fireplaces available, but they aren't very attractive from the side, which is how you enter our bedroom. The view from the bed would be fine, but from the sides and above you see the vents. Hence our consideration of stoves, attractive from three sides.

Pal, I think you're right about that stove. I like it, but it probably wouldn't work. If I went for a framed linear fireplace I could float it off the ground, which would help visually with the protrusion into the room. What do you think of the first fireplace I pictured? Valor I think.

I like many of the stoves you posted. Love the european hanging ones, but I'm sure I can't get them in Canada. We're not allowed to have anything that fun. :)

I am confused about what you mean by seeing the vents. The vent can go back directly to the wall. Or you can cover it up with metal work. We covered up the vent with blackened steel and made it a part of our decorative metal work.

I have 2 Valor brand gas fireplace inserts. They are direct vent. They have been in use for 6 yrs and the other for 14yrs. Both work as well today as they did when purchased. We got the 2nd one when we liked the one the po had installed. I don't have the style you are looking for but I can say the Valor folks make a wonderful and reliable product. c

We have a Jotul stove and love it. Ours is more traditional and woodburning, but they also have this funky looking gas one.

I wouldn't put a stove in a bedroom. My question is whether the room minus the furnishings shows modern or looks like an old house. The style of the fireplace should match the bones of the room, IMO.

I did some research on fireplace inserts a while back. Trailrunner's Valor would be my choice because you can adjust the amount of heat coming from it.

Yes the Valor inserts put out a lot of heat on high. We can adjust as needed from very low to very high. It is nice as I turn the one in our bedroom on high for 30 min before we go to bed and then I lower it when we go to bed. Makes it cozy but not stifling. c

Thanks for the good advice everyone. I too quite like the Valor, particuarly because of the ability to adjust the heat. I'm happy to hear of positive experiences with valor.

graywings - white the original part of the house was built in 1877, there have been many additions over the decades and the interior of the house no longer appear old. The bedroom addition was probably done around 1969, so it is fairly modern. The office off the bedroom has large art deco inspired windows (like in my kitchen), that is the only 'design' element in this part of the house. Everything else is pretty vanilla.

kaismom - thanks, I will check those links out. Yes, the wall hung fireplaces vent out the back, but there are air vents (for the blower perhaps??) visible from the sides and from above. Bottom line is that they aren't that attrative from the sides, which is how we would always approach the room.

We got the fireplace that has NO visible airvents in the front.... This made the fireplace really expensive but it was worth it.

Download the specs from the company and see if it works for you. Spark fireplaces do not have visible air vents. There is a built in blower that puts out a huge amount of heat to the room.

kaismom - is your fireplace wall hung? Wall hung is most practical installation for our room, but (understandably) you can see the sides and top of the fireplace. If your is wall hung, I'm surprised you can cover up the vents with metal work?

Here is the Sparks wall hung. Perhaps it isn't such a big deal though, the Sparks side view looks a bit better than the Napoleon wall hung.

My unit is not a wall hung unit. There are cabinets to the left of the fireplace and the FP is built into the box that was built there. As you can see the FP is butted against the stair well that come up to that level of the house.

Then to the right of the fireplace is a panel that covers a wall over the framing. There is an opening below to the level below. The second picture is the FP from the backside.

We wanted all the metal to have the same material and not have the metal front of the fireplace to be different from the flue cover and the mantle top. So we had it custom made to cover up the metal that the FP comes with.... The third picture is how the metal sits on the cabinet with the reveal.

This was an extremely difficult thing to do and make it look reasonably nice. There was a very ugly plain box that housed an old gas FP and TV in the current built in spot.

I don't know what to say about the wall hung model and the vents that show.

I agree, I do not think the side vents are attractive.
Look at Kozy Heat - we have a Kozy Heat and love it, although not in a bedroom. Ours puts out a lot of heat, and is our primary source of heat. It is surrounded by marble.
There are some gorgeous contemporary styles.
