What do you call this type of window?

I live in an older farmhouse. We have two windows in our home (original to the house) that are very common in our area in older homes. I don't have a picture - but I would describe it as being a wide window that has a transom at the top. The dimesions of the window are roughly 3.5 wide by 5.5 feet tall, and I would estimate the top 1/3 of of the window is a separate pane or what I call the transom. At one time, you could open them by lifting the larger bottom pane up giving a very short, wide opening at the bottom. (Our windows do not work this way anymore) In some homes, the transom has stained glass in it. In ours, the panes of glass are plain in the transom area.

Is there a special name for this type of window? Also - how should a window like this be dressed? I think it would be cute to hang something (blinds for example) just below the sill of the transom rather than hanging them at the top.

I would appreciate any thoughts or info about this type of window. Thank you!
