...and will be put down early this week.

Our local Circle of Friends Animal Shelter took in two stray dogs in March. One of them was sent to a foster fami1y and within a few days was showing signs of rabies. The dog, "Cookie", was euthanized, and tissue testing proved rabies.

The second stray that was caught and brought in the same time as "Cookie," was also euthanized.

Now, on the recommendation of the State Veterinarian and the Animal Board of Hea1th the shelter dogs that were in close contact with these two must also be put down. About 15 people are having to start anti-rabies shots, too.

Several people had asked why the dogs cannot be vaccinated as soon as they come into the shelter. Vaccines would have been useless, because the dog already had the virus; it just took a few days to show the symptoms. It boils down to the owners' responsibility. Dogs are not disposable toys; they must be vaccinated and cared for and not dumped in the country to fend for themselves.
