That's wonderful, really. I'm so pleased everyone was so generous. People want to help, and if they can help with specific things which they know are needed, people are more willing to be generous rather than give money which they really don't know where it's going in some cases.

I took care of my baby grandson today, and I was thinking about Japanese women with babies. No diapers, how would they fix a bottle? Baby cranky, crying, confused, difficult to calm. It's cold, probably don't have any clothes except what the babe was wearing. Worry about radiation. It's challenging enough under the best of circumstances to care for a baby. My heartfelt prayers go out for them.

Yep - DJs said "no money" - and that it was going DIRECTLY to the children, and plus there was a story there - so people felt connected and wanted to give. I almost cried when I was at Walmart, thinking Gosh they need this and that and this and that and I just want to give more than I can afford. But when I dropped off, my few bags were tiny next to the huge pile of stuff - it filled the center of the entire showroom - plus there was a truck filled already outside. That was just one drop off location of many.

I'm sure the extras will be distributed to folks there who need it.

The market has continued to reject CFLs ... Not really. The only documented decline in CF sales I can find was in 2008, and that was largely caused by the worldwide economic crash. Last I heard, something like 20% of US replacement lamp (light bulb) sales were CFs. In Japan, it's eighty percent. Possible reasons for this difference will be left as an exercise for the reader. ... daylight phosphors ... Daylight phosphors have never been common in residential size retrofit CFs. The vast majority offered in stores were and still are 2700K or 3000K, and 82+ CRI. In recent years "full spectrum" (not really, just 5000K+, which is more or less daylight CT) CFs have become more available. Also, dollar stores sometimes sell the cheapest of the cheap CFs, with obsolete (but cheap) low CRI cool white halophosphate phosphors. Anybody so skinflint as to buy that garbage deserves what he gets. (FWIW, a drugstore near here is currently selling 23 watt Bulbstar CFs in packages of 2 for $1! I was sorely tempted to pick up a pack to see how they worked, but didn't. I know the parts and labor that go into a CF, and anything sold at that price has to be outright junk.) IMO, the big issue hurting adoption of CFs has been not short lifespan, but inconsistent lifespan. It's quite possible or even likely that the 6,000 - 10,000 hour averages the manufacturers quote are correct. However, when 3 of the half-dozen 6,000 hour CFs you bought last 12,000 hours and the other 3 fail in the first thousand, you're going to be understandably upset even though the average life is actually better than advertised. Another factor operating here is simple fashion. Through the early 2000s it was trendy to be "green." CFs were not only so perceived, but also showed that you were thinking long-term. Currently in the US there seems to be a backlash against conservation and even against saving money. Weird. There's also the entirely understandable resistance people have to being told what to do. What I find bizarre is that this often leads people to do irrational things - folks who despise high efficacy lighting mainly because the law requires it, for example. Or my friend who actually stopped wearing her seat belt, which she'd done for years, when the state passed a law requiring it. And finally we have a new generation of fearmongers who peddle unjustified worries about mercury (the additional electricity generated to power an incandescent instead releases far more mercury into the environment). They also contend (with no evidence whatsoever) that the reduction in waste heat from CFs means that people will turn up the thermostat and use more energy. Now that is REALLY grasping at straws.

The on-site diesel generators were supposed to supply power to keep the plant in a safe condition ( keep the coolant flowing), but the tsunami put the auxillary power out of service. Pressure has risen to twice normal and due to lack of power, the plant operators are having difficutly in operating relief valves. The reactors are in danger of meltdown. It will horrribly expensive if this occurs and will impact the Japanese economy for years to come. Their economy has already taken a big hit from the earthquake and tsunami.

When my mother graduated from university, she took a train trip from Dallas to NYC to visit one of her friends in Connecticut. She stopped in Cincinnati on the way back and enjoyed her time there. She never traveled by air and never visited me in California, even though there are trains from where she lived to Los Angeles. Her mother was much more adventurous and visited Europe many times - she had no fear of flying. She also visited Lebanon in 1957 and thought it was a beautiful place. She also went to Turkey and quite a few other countries. My grandfather used to go with her, but he got tired of traveling before she did, and then she just went by herself. When I was at university, I used to take the Santa Fe train between Houston and Temple, Texas, which is where I was born. Temple was built as a railroad town, has a Santa Fe Hospital, and is the location where the NorthSouth line intesects the East West line. I was not happy when Amtrak took over, but when I was at university, the Santa Fe railroad still operated the passenger trains. The train I took started in Houston and ended in Chicago or Milwaukee. At Temple, one could change trains to go west to El Paso and Los Angeles. I've also taken the train between Houston and New Orleans, which is pretty much a party train, especially around Mardi Gras. In California, I've only taken the train between Oakland and Vancouver. When Amtrak took over passenger train service in the U.S., they sold the nice stainless steel passenger cars to Mexico, including the sleeping cars, and I used to ride on those all over Mexico. Then Mexico ended its passenger train service and replaced it with "luxury" buses, which are not nearly as nice.

we did, Amy. We had fun! We hit the clearance racks for warmer clothing. they were asking for that . We purchased for young men. sized mens small and medium. had a blast.
We drove it up to Puyallup toyota on the deadline weekend. Now there are over 12 semis full. I hope they can get it on a plane soon! I'm suprised that they have been having trouble getting one.
