I suppose that adding extensions to the legs cannot hurt anything. If you decide it looks terrible, then you can try again. So... - Remove the top first. It should be screwed to the aprons from underneath from your picture. Store the top in some safe place to avoid dinging it as you work. - Choose a profile for the extension by drawing it on paper or cardboard stock. were it me, I'd go to the extent of drawing the whole leg, then cutting it out so my wife could ok the exact shape. No surprises. Surprises are bad. - Drill the legs and the extensions for a dowel insert. I'd go with at least a 1/2 inch dowel. 1 1/2 inches is deep enough. You can get packaged dowels for this from a local home center or by mail order. Make sure the dowel is just a bit shorter than the total hole depth. Too long of a dowel is bad. ;-) Drilling the table legs is best done with a drill press to make sure the holes are vertical. If no drill press, then do it carefully with a hand drill. Its easy to make a mistake here, so I'd try to find a friend with a drill press if possible. - Shape the extensions as planned. Test fit on the table legs. Make sure you are happy with how it looks now. - Sand and finish the extensions. Shellac might be a good choice of finish. - Test fit again. Put it together. Make sure you are happy before gluing. Use a woodworker's glue when done. Its best to finish before gluing, as its easiest to clean off a spot of glue after the finish is applied. You don't need too much glue anyway. If after some time you are unhappy with the result, then find a local group of woodworkers. In the Rochester NY area, its the RWS. See the attached link. They have a furniture maker's SIG. I'd bet you could find someone who would love to help out as long as you provided the materials and were willing to do part of the work. Are you limited to just choosing from this collection? If you want pieces that have the same wood finish, then keep looking for what you want. Will it bother you that the sofa feet are another wood tone? I think either rug is fine. Do you have kids/pets? If so, I'd want to make sure the rug and sofas are cleanable :-)

Thanks for all the votes! It seems like the rectangular #1 or #5 in an oval (or maybe even round) are the front runners right now. Those are probably my front runners, too. I found another furniture store in the area that has the first table shown on their website, so I may try to get over there and take a look at the finish. I just am very reluctant to order such a large item on the internet and then have to return it!! One of my thoughts, tho, about using a rectangular coffee table is that the sofa is basically a rectangle and the rug is a rectangle, so I thought something round or oval would be better. I am totally open to changing the round, pedestal side table. I'm kinda ready for a change there as well. I have been looking on CL and so far, have come up with nothing. I'm also watching for something to come into the consignment shop where I volunteer. In the meantime, I'm going to visit a few more furniture stores and keep watching CL and consignment.

This is the style you're getting, correct? How do you intend to use the coffee table/ottoman in the room? For people to put their feet up on, or more to hold reading material and something to eat or drink? I don't think someone sitting at the far ends would be able to use an ottoman for their feet, unless they sat at an angle, but I could be wrong. Do you plan to have tables and lamps at either end of it? That could influence my decision on what to put in front of it.
