I bought a pair of Birkis... Birkenstocks

and I really like them! I was nervous ordering shoes

online as I have wide feet with a high instep. These were

a little tight when I put them on, but now they are

very comfortable. I've been wearing them around the

house since I got home from work. I only tried them

because of the price... they were cheaper than what they

are now, and the straps have many holes for the buckle.

I bought the navy blue ones. I've never owned

Birckenstocks, these have a soft footbed. I will buy

another pair of Birkis sometime.

I am not sure, how many I have... but let see,
navy,
red,
white,
tan with a pattern,
red with a pattern,
blue with a patten,
striped,
and... oh, heck, I don't know. Presently I have only two pair, as all the others are still in storage.

I LOVE birks!

When I was first diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, the podiatrist recommended a couple of shoe brands and also told me to go to a certain local store, where they would make me hard half-foot arch supports. They worked, but I found their lack of flex to be a little uncomfortable. I went back and he had me step into a box of stuff that made a mold of my feet. A few weeks later, I had some nice whole-foot cork orthodics that matched my feet exactly and were comfortable. I've worn them just about every day since then. Every year or two, I take them to a shoe repair place to re-cover, but they've been going strong since about 1998. It seriously makes a huge difference to get arch supports that are just right for your feet-- my arches are so high that over-the-counter ones don't help. Your husband will be happiest if he gets to the podiatrist even if he doesn't like going to doctors. Oh, and of the brands that the doctor recommended, one isn't good anymore (they got bought out), but the other is Mephisto. They're wickedly expensive, but they're absolutely perfect for my feet. If you husband wants sneakers instead of Birkenstock sandals, you might point him in the direction of Mephisto All-Rounders. They're very comfortable and have a removable footbed so that you can put in your own orthodics if you want to without your foot getting crowded in the shoe. I buy mine through Zappos because they're cheaper there than at the nearby brick-and-mortar stores. (Sorry, no-green-thumb. But it's $40-$50 more locally, which I think is too much.)

Maybe if I had a bigger closet I'd have more shoes! Nah, doesn't necessarily work that way. Two houses ago we had two huge (to us anyway, one 8x10ish and one 6x12)walk-in closets and it didn't affect our purchasing habits at all. I think it's simply just in how naturally acquisitive you are. If you're oriented toward accumulation of "stuff", it doesn't matter whether you live in a 20,000sf mansion or a 200sf studio, you're going to find a way to have your stuff, and it doesn't really matter what your "stuff" is either. When I lived in a 200sf studio, one of my immediate neighbors (same size apartment) lined one of her walls (12 foot ceilings, note) with shoe boxes and had a stepladder to get to the way-up ones. She was practically a Carrie Bradshaw - she chose to live in this teensy apartment so she could have hundreds of pairs of $300-500 shoes. 20x20 is almost half the size of the second floor of my 1 1/2 story house. The notion of a closet that size boggles me. Clearly I'm in the wrong place - is there a forum for "po'-ass trash"?

Yes, again to wearing them in. The cork footbed will mold to your feet. BUT, these are the real "Birkenstocks", right? Not Birki's? The latter have manmade materials, and some have a squishy layer of foam and though they look like Birkenstocks, they're a whole different experience. I don't know a lot about plantar fasciitis. I believe gentle stretching might be in order? Birkenstocks also require gripping with the toes. Is that good or bad for the fascia? I know there are some conditions where they recommend against it. Did you ask why about the recommendation? Perhaps it was because the footbed doesn't have give the way Crocs do, even though they mold to your foot over time? Are you used to wearing heels? Even small ones? If so, your back could hurt from wearing the Birkenstocks because your posture needs to readjust to totally flat. They call them "footprints" for a reason. While your foot is supported, once the footbed molds to your feet, and before it is broken down by age and wear, it's the closest you can get to barefoot with a shoe on (which is why I always have a pair!). If you regularly wear a shoe with a heel, or even some kinds of athletic shoes which balance forward onto the ball of your feet, your pelvis and spine realign to fit the slope. Over time, your ligaments even shorten to the configuration. If the backache feels muscular, it's probably just that you're using different muscles in unfamiliar ways, and it's actually good for you. Once the pain subsides, you can go back to wearing the Birkenstocks for short periods that won't stress your back until the muscles learn the differences.

I've tried original Birkenstock Arizonas but I felt like I was walking on rocks. Maybe the soft footbed is better. However, I have the Birkenstock Arizona Essentials and I love them! They are all plastic and they are they best beach shoes. Not very stylish, but very practical. I love mine, too. Check out the Zurick ones.. They are my favorite summer ones.. I am like Moni, I have navy, black, straw, light tan, dark tan and I would like a white pair..

With my arthy I have to wear the hard sole ones. The soft sole doesn't give me enough support.

I LOVE birks, too. Enjoy...

I have 2 pair, I don't wear them anymore. My feet keep changing so now they hurt. I still think they are ugly. I do wear crocs...which are ugly also but they are great for the beach & pool. You can't wet the birks.

My 82 year old mother asked me to find her a pair of flat sandals. She didn't want any kind of thong. I finally stumbled on Birenstocks. She has had them a week. She likes them so far.

they are the only pair of shoes that ever gave me blisters so badly that my feet were bleeding, They do not fit my very flat feet at all they rubbed in all the wrong places, I really wanted to love them but I had to give them away and let my poor feet heal.

I do however love my Keen sandals

I loved my Birks but they were over $100 here and they do not last on my feet more than 6-8 weeks before I am through the sole. After a few pair, I quit. I walk crookedly. I have moved on to crocs and immitation ones from the dollar stores. I go through these soles too but it takes longer and not the financial hit of replacement.

Like Joanne_fla, I stopped wearing mine because my feet don't find them comfy any longer. I used to wear them daily. I now wear Keens when I'm walking/hiking, working out, and just around when in casual mode. They are the most comfortable shoe I've ever had and I'm a shoe whore (can I write that?). The foam-based padding is fabulous. Still going strong after 3 years of daily wear, and I just bought another. They're not the most attractive, but my feel love them - right out of the box too. Shoebuy dot com has regular sales of up to 25% off. ...... just in case anyone wants to try them (free shipping and returns). Highly recommend and all the websites that sells them have great feedback on this shoe.

They're just too hard for me. I bought a pair and was only able to wear them a few times before I realized this.

some of the Keen sandals also have a cork type footbed similar to those in Birks, the pair I have that I wear daily and have had for a couple of years now do have that footbed. And I too wore them out of the box the day I got them and never had a problem which is very very rare for me and my weird feet. This is the pair I have the Daytona

Their sandals are very much unisex styles this one is actually called a mens but fit me much better than the womens because it is a little wider.

Well, enjoy--I know my sister likes them. I have plantar fasciitis, though, and my podiatrist says they're the worst shoes to wear for that--so I don't.

My Podiatrist also said not to wear any sandals.

I looked at those Keens, and it seems like they only come in Reg. width. That would never work on my wide short foot. I have such trouble buying shoes.

that is exactly why I went with that one in the "mens" size it is perfect for my wide flat feet. On my feet it looks very normal does not look like a mans on a woman. But as I said all of their products are quite unisex looking. I got mine at REI store where I could try them all on. They are also all weather proof including waterproof.

Kat, be sure to check out zappos.com or shoebuy.com for free shipping both ways if you are unsure about sizing. I just got a pair of Orthaheel sandals, ordered in two sizes to get the best size, returned the one I didn't want.

Glad you found a sandal you like.
