Question About ... um ... Fertilizer

I have rabbits. I have a garden (flowers, shrubs, trees). Rabbits poop. Would that be good used as fertilizer in the garden?

Of course it would!

I don't know how "potent" rabbit poop is, so you might want to pile it all up and let it age for a couple of months.

This has been discussed lots more recently than a decade ago. Indeed, urine is an excellent source of nitrogen, but be careful about dilution to prevent burn. Also, and this is important, don't use old urine. I knew a guy who peed in a pail and, months later, he'd pour it on his plants, expecting miracles. That doesn't work. The urease that is floating around degrades the urea in it pretty quickly. That's where you get the ammonia smell from urine. That smell is nitrogen that isn't going to end up on your plants. By the way, this isn't a revolutionary discovery. There is a long history of recycling of human urine as fertilizer.

If I remember correctly the instructions say something about watering the plants well first and then feeding them. I assume the idea is that you don't want to water them soon after feeding and wash it all out so you water then first, then feed, then let the plants absorb the nutrients. So the amount given to each is going to depend on the size of the container, the size of the plant - the bigger each is the more they get - and the needs of the specific plant. Not all vegetables require the same nutrients or the same amounts of nutrients of course so you wouldn't feed everything equally anyway. And any plants who have nutrient deficiency symptoms would clearly need more than plants that are healthy and good color. Dave

"Is this fertilizer safe for plants, Could it hurt or kill them?" It is perfectly safe when used according to label instructions. ANY fertilizer has the potential for damaging plants if used in excess. Generally, you want to fertilize only during the primary growing season, which for most temperate climate plants is March/April through September/October........some deviation will be present according to specific location and climate. Many container gardeners fertilize weekly at half strength or less. Since all my permanent (long term) container plantings get a dose of CRF at the beginning of the season or when first potted or repotted, I tend to use the liquid solutions infrequently, perhaps once a month, if that. Typically, I let the plants tell me when they might require it, but that's a bit of an acquired skill that comes with experience :-)

Oh, it's the best. Can be used straight as is on the plants, as long as you don't over do it. I like putting about a cup with each plant in the spring at planting time, when I have some.

Rabbit manure is a great fertilizer! I recommend using it as a manure tea as well - it's not as aromatic as other manures (like cow!). If you compost you can add it as well - you'll end up with a rich loam.

I don't know about rabbits, but manure from cattle and horses should be composted or heated before spreading on your flower beds and/or garden. It is full of viable plant seeds and every weed seed that the animal might eat. Spreading untreated cow and horse manure is like seeding with every known plant in the pasture with the exception of a few they don't eat.

Can't wait for composting? Then heat the manure to high enough temperature to kill the seeds.

We used to raise rabbts and found the manure was absolutely wonderful for gardens.
We used to put it in piles around the garden in the winter time and then spread it over the garden in the spring when it had broken down and it did a wonderful job.

Rabbit manure is at the top of the "poop pyramid". It can be used fresh out of the rabbit since it doesn't burn the plants like other fresh manure does. It has good nutrients, and rabbits are cute to look at while waiting for the next delivery of manure.

I have a row of bushes the rabbits like to hide out in and leave lots of poop in. I guess they don't need any extra fertilizer. However it must have been a tough winter for them this year. They chewed all the bark off a lot of the branches on the bushes in front and backyard. It has never been done so drastically before and have a lot of dead branches to trim off. They maybe killed off one or two.

Rabbits!!!!! Yes, their poop is a great fertilizer, but... it is a vicious cycle. They poop... plants grow... they eat said plants... they poop.... You get the idea :) I finally gave up on the free fertilizer, and fenced them out.
