Jeez, dex your response sounds a bit harsh. Haven't you ever watched a movie then read the book? Or pretty much knew how involved a book or movie was?
I've gone to many a movie knowing darned well how it ended, read many a book pretty much knowing what the content was.

Seems like I cry over any book or movie now. Must be an age thing. I just finished Crown Jewel by Fern Michaels, very good. sniff, sniff.

I picked up "The Wedding" (Nicholas Sparks) at a yard sale Saturday and started it yesterday and I have a box of tissues close-by! Also bought another of his books "The Guardian" at the same sale! The girl selling them said she cried reading both of these books!

Oh, I got it on e-bay catlady. If I spoiled it for you I am so very sorry!! Angela Huntt writes other books also. I have not read any of her other books but she seems to be a rather a prolific writer. Actually, this book was in with several books by another author I like that I bid on. Now, I have found another author I like.:) I am bidding on a book she has written it is called the Note. (by Angela Hunt) I have sold ALOT of my books on e-bay but I keep buying books. Seems my inventory never does diminish. Oh well, things could be worse I guess. ;0)

Do any of you who buy books ever read them more than once? Do you not have a public library nearby? (I don't understand buying novels.)

I rarely tear up over a book, but I did at the end of "City of Thieves", which I read last year.

was reading a fern michaels (love her fast and easy read stories) and for some reason one scene was sooo funny i was loling but trying to be silent as dh was asleep...bout choked...

I don't usually re-read a book unless its exceptional. I am re-reading a series now that I think is wonderful! Its the Streiker series 1.Streikers Bride, 2. Streiker the killdeer and then 3.Striekers morning sun. They are old and hard to find. By Robin Hardy.
I always re-listen to audio books, there always seems to be something I missed, they just keep getting better. I won't listen to them after about 10 times, then they get old.

I don't mind either. After all, most people knew the ending of Marley and Me, but they saw the movie anyway. I'm personally GLAD you told the ending because I try to avoid sad animal stories!

At my age and with my "memory", you can tell me the ending of a movie, book or TV show and I'll still be surprised when the conclusion hits! Ah, the perks of old age. LOL

I'm reading "Scarpetta" by Patrica Cornwell. I'd kinda gotten burnt out on her and didn't read the book before this one, but this one grabbed me on the first page and hasn't let go. I'm close to being half through and it's sure held my attention. I had just finished one by Joanne Fluke--they're very quick reads.

I've had a few books that I really felt emotional reading. One was "Lovely Bones". I swear I would pick up that book and just bawl like a baby! In fact I really enjoy a book that grabs me that way...it means that the writer has done his/her job. They have been able to reach out and bring me into the story using good writing. I enjoy being transported into the book and basically seeing and feeling right along with the characters.

One of my all-time favorite books is: "A Soldier of the Great War" by Mark Helprin.

I have many big bookcases filled with mostly books I have read and re-read - they are like old friends, I will revisit them every four or five years or so. Sometimes I want to read something but don't want to start an unknown, so I will pick out an all time favorite. Every time I get something new that I have missed on previous reads.

I do buy lots of paperbacks, then if they are going to be a favorite, I will get the hardback for a keeper. Those I'm not interested in reading again, I donate to the local second hand bookstore or to the women's shelter.

I just started reading "The Bell Jar", by Sylvia Plath, which I can't believe I've never read before. I have wanted to read it for years but just never got around to it. Was at Target on Saturday buying my boyfriend's sister a book for her bday and I spotted it and snagged it.

So far it's really good...right up my alley. :)

Some of the new people posting here are a bit testy. We seldom used to have that on here. If you can't be kind, then maybe you should just SOB. Vique.

I have several books that I have re-read: Gone With the Wind, Angela's Ashes, Lonesome Dove, The Last Picture Show, Terms of Endearment, The Joy-Luck Club, Rich Man, Poor Man, Memoirs of a Geisha, Cold Sassy Tree, A Prayer for Owen Meany, Delores Claiborne and To Kill a Mockingbird all come to mind.

I was just out of highschool when I started Gone With the Wind. I was commuting to my first "real" office job by bus and needed a good read to pass the time. I also read on my lunch break. One day I took it with me to Woolworth's and sat at the lunch counter. I finished the book and looked up and was shocked to see that the clock on the wall read 3:00!

I hurried back to the office where everyone was puzzled by my long break. I came in, carrying the book as they asked where I'd been. I asked, "Did any of you ever read Gone With the Wind?" Their blank faces told me NO so they really couldn't understand how it felt to be totally transformed by a book.

Now, years later, I still read on my break (different job, tho!) But I notice that I look up at the clock every 5 minutes!

Mylab, what you wrote above describes me perfectly. I also feel the same about movies. You do pick up tidbits that you missed before especially in the movies. When I watch a good movie I view the special features and learn a lot about making the movie and about the cast. I watched The American President last night and the special features explain how they duplicated the White House, Camp David, etc., very good.

I don't know how I would have gotten along the last 5 months without my good movies. I could not hold a book for 3 months.

You all might want to check my post on The Kindle, an electronic book. I think I gotta have one.

Oh, now I want to read Gone with the Wind again!! I guess it was in the 70's when I last read that book. Too many books and not enough time. People that love to read will understand what I am about to say, my imagination (when I read the book) is sometimes better than the movie. Well, probably most of the time, but that sounds conceited, but I don't mean for it to sound that way.

I'd love a Kindle. Waiting for them to come down in price. The idea of saving all that paper is a thrill all by itself!

(I didn't mean to sound 'preachy' about buying books. I was genuinely interested to know if people read them more than once. I've come across mighty few I'd read twice. We use our library to death. I'm pretty sure that any book I'd want to go back to re-read could be found there.)

I like to swap books on paperbackswap dot com, which I found out about from someone here on the KT.

I just finished "The Drowning Tree" by Carol Goodman, and just requested "The Seduction of Water" by same author from PBS. Not a tearjerker, but a good romance/suspense/literary mystery, with a bit of classic gothic feel around the edges.

I mostly buy paperbacks, because I am a voracious reader (a book a day, if nothing gets in my way) and the really good ones I save to re-read much later. Not many of those.

I have everything Dick Francis ever wrote, even his "A Jockey's Life," and re-read them occasionally. Great descriptive writing, but the plots and their themes are a bit dated, and sometimes off-base. A few years ago I got rid of my complete Robert Keinlein (sp?) collection, which had accumulated because of "A stranger In A Strange Land."

I like mysteries/thrillers mostly, no really heavy reading here. I read to escape, not to indulge in weighty thinking.

I still have WAY too many books..and recently donated over 200 once-read paperbacks to the local shelter resale shop. They were thrilled, as most of them were still on the retail shelves.

I re read some of my books. I have a small room and the walls are lined with bookshelves. I am still trying to get it more organized. I have a few different copies of Black Beauty that I won't part with. As many of you know I get all my books at rummage sales and some are hard back and some are soft cover. My girls and I all love to read. I just have not been in the mood to read lately, I think when I can feel better I might get back to it. I like a lot of different authors. Fern Micheals, Nora Roberts, Danielle Steele, Beverly Lewis, Mary Higgins Clark, I just can't list all of them.

Hi Marilyn, I have read every one of Beverly Lewis' books except her newest one. (I will wait until it is bargain priced) I buy the Beverly Lewis for children for my granddaughter. Also the Wanda Brunsteller for children for my granddaughter. They are wonderful. I use to read Mary Higgins Clark all the time until she died and then they were written by her family. (I hope that is the author I am thinking about) Correct me if I am wrong. I didn't think they were as good any more. I also use to read Danielle Steele alot, also. I have never read a Nora Roberts to date. My sil can't believe as much as I like to read why I haven't picked one of her books. Beats me, just haven't.

Someone mentioned The Bell Jar. I wonder if that's the same book I read in grade school some---40 years ago. ?? Hadn't thought of that in years. I don't read books now.

I'm a reader also and love Debbie Macomber, Dorthea Benton Frank, Susan Wiggs, along with many other authors. I bought "Scarlett" at a thriftstore other day but haven't started reading it yet. It's the sequel to "Gone With The Wind".

okwriter, yep, it is probably the same book. I think it was first published in the early 60's. Sylvia Plath commited suicide in 1963 (by sticking her head in her gas oven!) about a month after the book's first publication.

I have couple of bookcases filled with books to read. I just haven't had time lately. Too much stuff going on and too much outside work. I get mine at a used bookstore, trade old books for new books, or find them at the different thrift stores I go. Occasionally I will ask for certain ones as presents from DH and he does that too. I can't finish a book in the time they give you at the libray.

I think I have some of the Wanda Brunsteller too and some of the other authors that write about the Amish. I probably don't have Beverly Lewis' latest book, do you know the name of it? I buy all of her books I see at rummages. Sometimes I run across a lot of them. I share with my daughters and they with me.

Have you started reading the Grace series by Beverly Lewis? She has just come out with that series, #1 is "The Secret", and #2 is "The Missing". Also, have you ever read any of Lynn Austin books or Tamera Alexandra books? Lynn Austin is an all time favorite of mine and Tamera T. also. Lynn Austin is really, really good she will keep you spell bound from the beginning. "A Proper Pursuit", "A Place to Call Home", and "Hidden Places" are really good ones, but ALL her books are Great. She is comming out with a new one this Oct. She is the only author that I will ask my family to buy her books for me for Christmas at full price. LOL.

No, I have not started reading any of the Grace series by Beverly Lewis. I haven't gotten caught up with the other books yet. I have them, but just haven't had the time or energy to read. I will have to keep those other authors in mind and look for those also. Thanks for telling me about them.

When it first came up I kind of turned my nose up at it, because it wasn't written by Margaret Mitchell (she passed away shortly after Gone With the Wind for anyone who didn't know). But I broke down when I saw it bargain priced at a garage sale and ended up liking it very much. She matures so much in the sequel.
