So, based upon the newest information, we are yet again regrouping on our kitchen remodel plans. Seems our cabinets are Ash, not Oak as we had originally thought. That makes the decision to build new doors and drawer fronts a bit more complicated. Oak is easy to find. Ash not so much. What we've found of it so far is also more expensive. We can't use the doors as-is (sanding off the dark stain caused bare spots in the plywood part). So we either have to re-surface the current doors or build all new ones.

*sigh*

We did order the hardwood flooring today. We also found a good candidate for our accent tiles.

Progress in some areas, stalls in others. No wonder this whole remodeling thing takes so long.

Hey...do you have anyone that you know in the cabinet or building business with a business? If so, why not just order new doors? I was installing drawer fronts a few weeks ago and realized that two drawers were mismeasured and I had to reorder them. I ordered through my brother's company. I had to pay a higher price this time because it as for two drawers only. They cost me $54 and some change. I KNOW that they would sell them cheaper in quantity. They can only sell to a business because they sell to HD & Lowes. If you had to order only doors you could order through HD, I'm sure of it.

The quotes we've received are for around $75-$100 / door. That's not in our budget - especially since we have so many other things to get fixed / updated.

Claire, I am not sure I've ever heard the term cute associated with starlings . . . ;>) Jane, that series of robin photos is absolutely stunning. I am always interested in the content of photos, but this month there have been a bunch of really lovely photos as far as composition and clarity. I'll submit some photos which are a bit more basic than artistic. I'm not sure how Claire gets such stunning turkey photos. Ours are very wily, and if I open a window or door to take a photo, they jog off in the opposite direction to the nearest shelter. So mine are taken from inside the house, and often through a combination of screen and glass. During the recent snowstorm, our local flock scooted across the road and down into the cornfield. I managed to catch a couple of photos before they disappeared into the evergreens to find shelter. They were moving much faster than usual; definitely looked unhappy about the weather. Moonie, thanks for the input- that's interesting some have seen the roots all around and some are only seeing them on the tip of an angle cut. Maybe we can all try and take notice when repotting in the spring - I'd not previously been paying a lot of attention to it. Kim - a Titanic, NICE! I agree, normally I wouldn't spend that much on a cutting either but some of the varieties are nearly impossible to get except through him, and with the future of 1-stop uncertain (and trees needing to grow back! LOL!) I decided to move on it. Mine is a beefy, grey wood cutting too, very nice feel to it. Del, Dazzler is also a really nice one! If I could afford it there are many more I would like to get! Haha! Yeah, those FB deals do go fast, he must be SO busy right now! Jen, I know, it really was a big rut-roh... but I decided you guys are right, it needs to be potted now. Waiting would probably do me more harm than good and with that great callous I feel it's more protected than what I could do with it. I'm very anxious to try George's callousing method in the spring because mine have been disasters, never good like this one. She's potted up, I gave her a good pep talk, and now she's in my *lucky* rooting spot that brought Gina and Moragne #78 out of their stalling when nothing else did. And you'll be first to know if I'm so lucky as to be overfloweth-with-Goldilocks LOL!!! I couldn't remember if my other cuttings from him were angle cut or not and honestly I never paid attention to the callous as much either but I will certainly look back at my pictures and see if I took any before planting, and I'll look when I re-pot. I'd like to add another question-- if anyone knows of such a place in Northern Illinois pls. post the info here... I remember reading about it a couple yrs ago but of course now that I need the info I can't find it! As you say, its an actual firing process and not the usual epoxy-based paint method most refinishers use. I remember the cost was more than the usual refinishing... but not as much as a new Kohler reproduction sink or tub (which can be 1 or 2 thousand bucks). I think it would be well worth the cost bc you know it'll last forever.

If you paint rather than stain the doors, you can select a maple or other easy to find, finely grained wood.

Another option that might be among the easier ones wuold be to make the new pieces totally different. Can you make them look like a separate piece or create an accent wall? Sometimes the best way to deal with a problem is to stop trying to cover it up and try accenting it.

Oak & ash are so similar that I'd probably use oak for the new doors & drawer fronts. I'm assuming you have ash face frames & that the doors are overlay?

The grain is so similar that I have problems telling ash from oak, esp. on small pieces like would be in a frame & panel door.

We're too far into the remodeling to do anything other than stain the doors.

ci_lantro - Hubby is very, very picky (as I've mentioned before). He can see the difference.

On the upside, we have some "spare" doors from a piece we've removed. Plan is to dissect one to see what the construction is so we know if we can just rebuild the fronts.

Thanks, I'll do that and see what we can find.

On the positive side, I dissected that spare door last night and it looks like it won't be too much trouble to rebuild them. All depends on what we want and what resources we can find. We're going to go to a local cabinet maker tomorrow or Saturday to see what they have to say.
