It's been a few years since this thread started, but it is encouraging, nevertheless. My two Spirit of Freedom bushes are still in the trying to get established stage even after 2 and 3 years. A wonderful tonic recipe I whip up and a thick layer of compost has helped, but they seem to be telling me they're not happy - yet. I will continue trying to figure out what they want/need and hope for the best. I LOVE the form of this rose. A similar rose I am having better luck with is Cinderella Fairy Tale, a Kordes rose. I have 2 of those, as well, one of which over wintered like a champ, the other died to the ground, however, has made a valiant effort at returning to the fold. It wasn't the cold, as we had a mild winter, but the freeze, thaw, freeze, thaw, all winter long did the dirty deed. These two roses are so perfectly formed they take my breath away, and are worth every effort to grow. I doubt my SOF will ever reach the height of Sarah's in my zone 5 garden, but I love this rose at any height. Sarah, are your 3 bushes still climbing higher? I would love to see an updated photo, if possible.

Jasper, thank you for your helpful comments. Ley's Perpetual never took off for me and Celine Forestier, which had done very well before, is now almost completely denuded of leaves. My Reve d'Or is also hanging on but no blooms to speak of for quite some time. I hope it will be stronger in a few more years. Have you tried Cl. Lady Hillingdon? The bush never did terribly well for me (in two different gardens) but the climber was a winner in another hot garden and I have an order in for another one this spring. I'll have to look up Niphetos. My Westside Road Cream Tea is growing wonderfully and producing lots of bloom even now, but they're very small and misshapen, which is disappointing. I'll give it another year. Perhaps Niphetos would be a good replacement if my rose doesn't mend its ways. In a cooler or perhaps more humid climate WRCT would I imagine be really wonderful. I do hope your remaining roses all make it. I'm beginning to think that tons of leaf mulch do help the roses especially during the heat. Ingrid

Thanks Dax! I've got a photo log file going of all my conifers and when they have/will put out new growth. I can use it next year to relieve a little of this year's wondering and newby impatience. My conifer interest is combined into a long overdue renaissance with the nature of my Huck Finn formative years after a long while as a confirmed concrete urbanite. Already keyed into the cycles of my town edge garden within those of the surrounding woodland. It's here to stay.

No thank you everyone! Making these bags keeps me busy. I keep some in my van and give away when I meet nice people or want to put a smile on some ones face. And these days, people can use a smile. I have enough fabric to make about 40 more. I have 2 other projects to finish before I can make more, 2 masks for someone and a bag to put on my walker if I ever get my knee replacement! Showed some of them to my one granddaughter this morning and she wants one of each!! Not going to happen. One of my DDIL's asked me to remind her how to make them again. I sent her the directions and told her I would walk her through. She is tired of making masks and wants to put smiles on other people too!

Congrats, winners. And thanks for starting such a fun thread, Beverly, we needed this not only because it was fun, but it also gave us something fun to look forward to through such a harsh, long winter. I was checking every day to see if anything was going on with it. Can't wait to see what you finally do with all these precious uglies.

How fun! I have been out of town and very busy so I have not been on the forum in almost 2 weeks. What a big surprise to see that my fabric was one of the worst! I don't think I could "win" any quilting contest/challenge on this forum, but at least I have a shot when it comes to UGLY fabric. LOL. Thanks for hosting this Bev. I'm looking forward to seeing what you can make of all of these uglies.

G4 - Lola99 - that's hilarious. I actually have that fabric and bought it by choice, lol! I think I picked it out for an I Spy quilt at some point way back??? hahaha!
