painted wood OR purestyle laminate OR thermofoil?
Comments (4)Most thermofoil will not yellow over time. The problem is, you can't tell which will and which will not by looking at a picture in the catalog, or even by examining a new door. I wouldn't take the chance. The clean-ability of modern cabinet paints is so close to that of thermofoil that you probably won't notice the difference. And, if you paint, and change your mind about the color in 10-15 years, you can repaint. You cannot re-thermofoil. Anyway, just my HO....See MoreWhite Cabinetry Thermofoil vs Painted
Comments (21)well. I am on my third house and third white thermofoil kitchen. The first house was schrock 42 inch cabs with pretty detail and white laminate counters, burgundy walls and hardwood floors. Not beyond budget, but they did yellow quickly for some reason and schrock replaced them all. We sold that house in one hour for 5000 more than the asking price. They said they loved the kitchen. Next house, 90 year old house. Again we did not want to overimprove and this time did newport, 42 inch from american woodmark/home depot. Again hardwood floors, stainless everything. It looked gorgeous. Again our house sold this past summer with a bidding war (5 contracts) They loved the kitchen....now in our new home, once more we did home depot, Newport. The cabinets held up at 2nd house and american woodmark was exceptional in service, so why change?!. We are upgrading to granite and again, we have dark hardwood floors. There is just something aBOUT white that you never tire of, and its obvious, we have not. We were only aBLE TO DO 36 INCH CANINETS THIS TIME BUT DID 5.5 INCH CROWN TO THE CEILING AND IT LOOKS GREAT. There is a lot of detail in the door which I did in square, not cathedral, and it is more of a matte finish. wish I knew how to post photos, but its not finished anyway. I almost did painted white but was talked out of it as they said the painted does not hold up as well. Good luck in your selection dilemna....See Morewood, painted wood or thermofoil/mullion
Comments (3)If you like the look (some do, some don't)the rigid thermal foil(RTF) doors will be easier to maintain over time. The RTF withstands stronger cleaners(we clean our samples with windex) and is less prone to chipping. While it is harder to damage the RTF it is also harder to repair so that is another consideration. In most cabinet lines the cabinet frame and exposed sides will be maple with matching paint. Only the doors and drawer fronts will be RTF. You will have lots more door styles from which to choose if you go with the painted cabinets. Most manufactures will use a tightly grained wood like maple and possibly some Medium Density Fibreboard(MDF) in the construction of the painted cabinets, you should not see grain bleeding through as these materials are very smooth. With variations in humidity the joints may open but this is normal and is not a defect, they should close up again when the weather turns humid. With RTF cabinets the quality of the construction will vary depending on the cabinet line you select, just like it does with the painted or stained cabinets you may be looking at. In general, the more you pay for the cabinets the better the quality of the cabinets....See MoreBathroom vanity - Painted MDF vs Thermofoil
Comments (7)Hi! If you have the option of using water resistant MDF that would be the option we would have you select. If thermofoil and "regular" MDF are the only two options you have, thermofoil in the long run will have better moisture resistance then the MDF. Both types of cabinetry do have their own pros and cons. Thermofoil will discolor over time and are harder to fix if there is any damage. MDF does not handle water well if it is not moisture resistant, it will degrade. Again if water resistant MDF is not an option, in the long run, we would take discoloration over cabinetry falling apart. Hope this helps! Detail Woodworking...See MoreDebbi Branka
