If you're looking at the Raypak RP2100 with Capron (polymer) headers, run like the wind. They are notoriously weak. Spend a few hundred more and go with the RP2100 ASME headers. This heater is commercially rated and highly reliable. The Hayward IDL2 is also quite reliable. Our experiences with anything Jandy is the fact that you will always pay more but not really realize the benefits in operation. Jandy is quite proud of their stuff and the price reflects it. The Jandy (LAARS) LX heater is decent but nowhere near worth the price compared to the two previous mentioned units.
Could you be more out of touch? The raypak 2100 hasn't been sold for over 4 years. The raypak commecial model is identical to their standard residential heaters, except the heat exchanger has metal headers and has been blessed by a testing lab.
The first batch of capron header were crap, but they did fix the problem, I have yet to see an issue with any of them.
Hayward heaters are by far the cheapest made and imo the most unreliable. Direct spark ignition on a pool heater? Can you say BOOM!!!!
I had installed 3 of the LX/LT series heaters and all of them had multiple burner tray failures.
Out of all of the Raypak digital heaters I have installed I have yet had to replace a defective unit, I cannot say the same for every other brand.
Sorry, referred to the Raypak as an RP2100. The current Rheem model in the ASME form is the best. I'll tell you that there are more issues with this heater out of the box though with spark gaps than any IDL2 we've ever put in. Commercially though, it is a star compared to anything else.We put in about 50+ IDL2's a year and the only call back is a web in the orifice. I see no issue with the direct spark, call me old school. You can't say there are no issues with the NT Lo Nox and "boom". The hot surface ignitors will go out far more than any spark pilot.
