double wedding ring question

I would love to make the double wedding ring quilt for my daughter but everywhere I read people say how HARD it is and I am just a beginner (I've made about 3 quilts).

What makes it so hard? Is it the piecing, cutting, or what? Is it doable for a newbie? I have an accuquilt go and if I use the die will it make it alot easier?

I think what most people find challenging is the curved piecing. I made a wall hanging DWR many years ago, and I didn't find it difficult at all. The curves are gentle and pretty easy to sew, I thought.

Thanks Donna. I know this is probably a stupid question...but can I piece it by machine?

They have to heat the ring up to resize it, even if making it smaller, they will cut it but then need to solder the ends together and the metal will conduct heat to the amber. In fact, I've heard that sterling can't be resized (or can only be done once) b/c it can weaken the metal. Also, depending on the setting, a ring may only be able to be resized (even down) to a certain point, maybe 2 sizes down, or 1 size up, without distorting the setting so much that the stone loosens and that's with hard stones. I lost a sterling and amethyst ring I bought at Goodwill that I really liked, it was just a little too big, maybe it could have been resized but I wore it before going to jeweler to see. I did read up on it though. I need to get my wedding & engagement rings (gold) resized (up, they heat and stretch, don't put a piece in) and was told engagement ring could go up 2 sizes (enough for me) but I didn't ask about band which is not full eternity band but is channel set so that might not be able to be done at all. DH will just have to buy me a new one for our 25th - though it would be a waste since I don't wear jewelry at all now b/c my hands are always in something (dirt, stain, dough).

Your quilt sounds lovely!!!!!!!!!!! I think the Pickle Dish border is a great idea. I received a gift certificate for MD and I am going to buy E. Burns Egg Money Quilts. She has a template and pattern for a faster and more accurate than the traditional small hand pieces. I can't order it until I come back from a short trip over the weekend. If our mailman leaves it on the steps it will drown with all of the rain we are getting LOL. Ms. Phillip's book includes the arc ruler for $25, but at the moment I don't want to pay that much for a DWR pattern. I'll keep you posted on what is in El's book. Rosa

LOL!!!! KD, I think the guys I'm thinking of were using their mixers for thinks like waffle batter (I just use a whisk for that), cupcakes (good Daddy), and stiff peaked eggwhites for baked omelettes. That would be an interesting thread, though. ... What's the weirdest thing you ever made in your mixer? :) Kaysd said it well--the memorable big ticket item is it exactly. Especially nowadays when they give couples the scanner gun and they pick things like spatulas, they may get a lot of matched things and stuff they need, but a couple of young recent brides I know have felt kind of let down by a lot of their gifts. Not unappreciative, but just kind of flat. They were all things off the registry, in the store's standard wrapping. No surprises, not many Wow gifts. Generous ones were more of the box full of stuff variety than the single memorable big ticket one. No clever gifties at the shower. Not many really special things for the wedding. It's all very efficient, but there aren't the warm memories. When I was in college and couldn't afford an expensive shower gift, I got some utensils and a box grater at the dime store and wired them together to make a robot. For a wedding, I'd give what I called the "crystal gift certificate". That's a small crystal (or silver, or whatever) serving piece that fit my budget, which could be easily exchanged. They never were exchanged, however. Sometimes, that was the only "fine" piece the couple got and they loved to have it. I can afford to give lovely presents now, but I try to put as much thought and effort into them as I did when I had to be clever. That's what people love and remember. It's not really about the stuff. It's about helping the new couple create a home and giving them lasting things that will bring lovely memories to them over the years as they use them.

My DH was never married to BM so no engagement/wedding rings were around. I do remember YEARS ago (probably 6+) I was in DH's office at work and opened a drawer and there was some jewelry---rings, braclets, necklaces. When he and BM had broken up, she'd stuffed everything he'd ever given her into a box and given it all back. There was a beautiful diamond and tanzanite ring, and some diamond studs----several other nice pieces. I wasn't necessarily *bothered* by it but it did make me feel weird. Not sure why. I have to admit, when I've seen pictures of DH with BM and SS as a baby, it makes me feel weird, too. I think it's a) partly because DH was so young (19-25) in the years he was with BM and it's odd for me to see him that way and b) BM is just so awful/cruel/vindictive now that it's tough for me to imagine him actually BEING with her. Fortunately, since they split when SS was 10 months, HE doesn't have any memories of them together. So there aren't pics in his room or anything of his parents together. All the old pictures DH has are in boxes and filing cabinets in our garage, and some are in a photo album, but most of those are of DH alone with SS---in the years after he and BM broke up. Rambling....anyway, at one point, DH asked me if I wanted any of the jewelry. I think the death stare I gave him said it all! I assume he sold the jewelry or something because I've never seen it since and I've never asked. I really don't care. I wasn't married to DD's father, either, nor was I engaged. My ring now was purchased by DH for me---not a family heirloom or anything. If we were to ever divorce, I assume I would keep it, not sure what I'd do with it. I could see hanging onto it and giving it to DD or maybe having the diamonds removed and made into a bracelet for her or something. I don't think it would be weird for your DH to give his old wedding band to his son--like someone else said, his son IS a product of that marriage. I don't think his son would see it as his dad holding onto old romantic feelings or anything. JMO.

The curves are dependent on accuracy. If you are able to have the pieces cut accurately and can sew an accurate seam, you can do it. But you must also put the curves together with solid pieces also curved. Generally starting with a project with straight lines is the best way to learn. If it frustrates you, it leaves a sour taste toward quilting that is undeserved. I'd never make one from scratch myself and I'm rather experienced. I did make one from pieces already together but wouldn't have done it except for a rare situation.

Thanks for the input! My plan was to make this for my daughter who is getting married at the end of the summer and I thought I would make it for a wedding gift. But even tho I THINK I can do it, it sounds like it would be better if I give myself more time and give it to them for their first year anniversary!

Quilting has become my new love. I lurk on these boards almost everyday so that I can learn more and am amazed at how beautiful all the quilts are. Thanks to everyone who posts pics of their quilts...they are such an inspiration to a new quilter like me!

Auntevie, I made a DWR for my daughter and now I am working on one for myself. I would not say it is difficult but everything must be exactly the right size for it to go together correctly. It is also very time consuming. I am working on a queen size quilt and have reserved a time to have it machine quilted in November. Do you plan to quilt it yourself? My longarm quilter plans on a week to quilt a queen size on her computerize machine.

Linda, your post tells me that i should definitely wait to give them their wedding quilt on their first anniversary. That way it will give me a full year to make and I can take more time to be careful. Thanks!

My one and only king sized quilt was a double wedding ring that I made for my oldest granddaugher. ( Hand quilted insidently)
I wouldn't say it was difficult other then the being accurate in cutting and sewing. As you have the means to cut it with accuracy that leaves the sewing a good seam.
As the curve is gradual I didn't find it difficult to do and it becomes easier with practice.
I would say go for it and if you don't finish it for the wedding there is still the anniversary.

I think it depends too on which of the many varitions of the double wedding ring quilt you are planning on doing.
There's one with very round joined circles, theres one with squarish circles, there's one with the long thin curved as a single piece instead of four or five pieces.
I also think it depends upon your frustration level. Some folks like a challenge and some find it rather daunting to even think about doing something with curved pieces.
There's also fabric to consider. The better the quality I think the easier it is to sew and cut.
So if you think you are ready for it I say go for it.
