hearing aid question

Hi kiddos! Hubby is thinking of getting one or two hearing aids. One doctor thought he might get some monetary help because of his previous jobs.

Has anyone been through Avada (sp) hearing? Super
expensive? I think I've seen some have gone through Costco... good experiences there?

I saw the ENT doc a long time ago and he sent me to an audiologist.....significant hearing loss. She quoted me $6000 for two. I decided I would continue saying "What? What did you say?" for that kind of money.
A year later I saw the same ENT about something else....he asked about the hearing aids so I told him I could not justify $6000. He suggested Costco.
I went there and got great service and the hearing aids for both ears were around $2000.
Six months ago, after having the aids for four years, I lost one.
I got tested again, at Costco and now have new hearing aids.
They are wonderful! New technology and I wear them all day every day. This time they were closer to $3000 for the pair but I am very happy with them.
I get wonderful service from them and they can be returned for full refund for up to three months.
Being able to hear again is well worth the money.
Good luck for your DH. You will both be happier, I think.

I got mine at Costco and I love them. Very good service. They cost $1,999 before tax. They are comfortable and people are surprised when they find out I am wearing them and I have very short hair.

They come with a Remote Control so you can turn them off or on or adjust the volume. That is real handy, especially when in a store with screaming kids whose parents ignore them.

They have rechargeable batteries so they don't have to keep changing them often. They also have this wonderful recharger box that recharges them overnight and dries them and keeps your pets from getting at them.

Funny you should ask - I find more and more I look at the Call Display and start speaking with the person without a hello, or I say 'Hello, Joan', or whoever it is...most on the other end seem so amazed that I know it's them...lol. As many of them are my tenants, I think it's great that they think I am so 'all knowing'...lol. Suzan J

Usually the key to having the hospital replace is some documentation that they were in her possession on arrival. Often the nurse's admission assessment will not just note specific items in the belongings list, but note that the person uses specific assist devices like hearing aids. Hospitals do replace dentures, glasses and hearing aids, it is not uncommon, but each one will have its own policies about it -- there is no universal requirement or standard. Unfortunately it is often a case of the items set on the food tray after a meal and not noticed when the tray is picked up -- and no way to trace it, since TJC considers the meal ticket as having protected information & it is supposed to be discarded before it leaves the room. I would keep going back to the hospital and ambulance company. Sometimes things turn up long after with no way to identify the owner. They could have been dropped anywhere from the room to the truck. They could still be in a drawer at the nurse's station, or in the pharmacy bin or any of the locked drawers for that room, or now in the hospital's lost and found. Or in another department if she went for a test - especially MRI. At the hospital, it is possible also that they are in a table that was moved to another room - ask them to check all the rooms on the unit, I learned to not just carefully record what my new patients had with them, and I would bluntly tell them that they risked having anything valuable stolen if they kept it, but I would also specifically state "No jewelry, No money, No credit cards" and so forth. And tell their family to NOT bring anything else.

Here testing by an audiologist or hearing aid specialist is free regardless of age. And most offer free 30/45 day trials. I have had better luck with the hearing aid specialist company than my local audiologist. The specialist has a direct line to an audiologist at Phonak, the brand that I have. I have the top of the line and also purchased the TV and Music set. Mine are 4 or 5 years old so technology has changed. My hearing loss is in the lower frequencies as opposed to higher frequencies. Mine is much harder to correct and I have struggled for years. I had a free checkup last week and learned that my right ear loss has increased. And of course, they wanted to sell me the latest and greatest new model. Haven't decided yet. I wish we had a Costco. The closest is an hour and a half away. Anyway, good luck!

Mine are from ReSound and cost $6k a year ago. They were fitted by an audiologist with a Masters degree at my ENT’s office. She is able to make adjustments and send them to my hearing aids over the internet. Mine are controlled through my iPhone. There is a button on mine where I can control volume, but I’ve never learned to use it, because it is so easily done from my phone. Mine are pretty much invisible. The thing behind my ear was ordered to match my hair color. the wire that goes from it to the part in my ear is very fine. The audiologist taught me where to put it so that it blends in with my ear. I can wear my hair behind my ears without the hearing aid showing. I agree with AD, your mother needs to be seen by an ENT. I blame my hearing loss on jet engines from my days as a flight attendant and from playing music too loudly. The audiologist said my hearing loss is barely at the level for hearing aids. I bought them mainly to appease DD. I say she talks too fast and does not enunciate clearly. She said I needed hearing aids. My mother got hearing aids (2) at Costco last year. She has $1500 coverage ($750 per ear) with her Kaiser policy but only usable at certain audiologists and Costco wasn't one of them. She still saved about $2000 buying them there, just disregarding her insurance and not using it.

If hubby needs them, go now, they literally told us its one of those 'use it or lose it' circumstances, the longer the wait, the less the result from the aids, and Mom resisted hearing aids for many years. I think this will be the year DH goes to be tested, I swear I am saying everything at least twice all week long :)

I'm surprised at how many of our 60ish friends have been fitted for hearing aids lately. And I don't have the details but one, just before his 60th birthday and a commercial real estate broker the last several years, was somehow able to go back to the years where he was a log buyer for a timber company, charge his hearing aids to L&I. He hasn't had L&I coverage for a long time as a partner/owner in his firm, but was tested and fitted with hearing aids all the same at no cost to him.

What's funny is, rather than aids calling attention to his age, he looked 10 years younger immediately. More relaxed, less strained in conversation I suppose :)
