Wife"? I've got it and am having trouble getting interested in it. Is it worth reading?

I loved it, had no trouble getting into it, couldn't put it down. I also loved the movie.

Two of my daughters read it and like it, but I couldn't get into it and didn't finish it. I do not like books that go back and forth.

I am "tickled pink" that Pinkie is still in the hearts & minds of some of us! LOL A special thanks to don_socal for the link, "What happened to the old GP days?" Wow, what a stroll down memory lane! Neat to hear some of the names of folks I still remember, and have a bit of an update on where they are now. I had drifted away from the gang before Dicken passed on to the Eternal Garden...so sad to read that. Spent the better part of a morning going thru the box of old photos I have but found only a few pictures of Pinky. I had taken her to a Civil War re-enactment on our little town in SW PA where she met with the brave nurses that traveled with the troops. Among the photos I had was one of her on a makeshift table with a nurse in costume dressing a "wound" on Pinkie's leg. :-) Had another one of Pinkie being held by a slightly bemused modern-day EMT that was also there, and of course several pics of her among the various pink flowers in my garden. Unfortunately, I found none of these better pictures. Cannot imagine where I put them for "safe-keeping" but someday when I least expect it I imagine they will surface! Anyway, thanks to those of you who responded, and for the pleasant nostalgia trip! Best wishes to all GPers for a terrific gardening year. CK

I just picked up "Advanced Bread and Pastry; a professional approach" by Michel Suas. This is a textbook that most culinary students would recognize. Roughly 1000 pages for about $60. Although geared towards the budding professional, there is a ton of great information for the advanced home baker's bread and pastry efforts. Do you really know why you need to scald milk for certain recipes? I didn't either. . .

It's been a while, FlyingFlower, but I found it a fascinating glimpse into another world. It's in my bookcase, and I'll read it and enjoy it again some day. But not particularly for decorating help. The world that existed for her was one in which "people" shared their homes with a bunch of underlings. She treated hallways as semipublic corridors, decorating them in a very basic and impersonal way, and virtually all rooms, of course, had doors that could be and were closed against them. Very interestingly for wealthy people who could afford almost everything, almost everything was excluded under the classic style she helped define. The acceptable colors and furniture styles were severely straightjacketed (and have mercifully since been blasted wide open). I don't really remember, but I think she considered only 3 specific colors acceptable for staircase walls. Her guidelines for developing a classic architecture are just as explicit and apparently what made this book a classic, but by the standard she sets the architecture and proportions of my rooms doom them to failure before even starting. For instance of many features "undistinguishing" my hovel, the ceiling of my 17' wide living room falls desperately short of a workable 17' or so at a cavelike 9'. Good book, though. :)

I've read all but the first one, though I tried to get through that one. SILENT SPRING lit the fire in my belly regarding pesticide use and helped shape the direction of my career. I first read it in college and became a thorn in the collective paws of my horticulture professors.

I'm reading it now. Just put it down to check the KT. I had trouble getting into it too at first. It is a different kind of book from what I usually read. I will finish it, anxious to see how it ends. Have to admit I kind of peeped.

I loved it. I read it in two days and still think about it occasionaly.

I liked the book a lot, but I didn't care for the movie they made of it. I'd rate it a Good Read. Light fiction. Especially if you like love stories and science fiction about time travel.

I read the first 50 pages and then just couldn't get through any more of it. I thought it was horrible. Didn't have any desire to see the movie either.

Like I said, I loved it, but I do not like science fiction. I don't look at it as a science fiction book at all even though there is time travel. It's different but excellent.

I thought it was an interestingbook and a good read, but I didn't find myself emotionally engaged by any of the characters.

I did wonder whether the title character was named for time-traveling Claire Fraser of Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series.

I liked it. I read a LOT of science fiction. It's a "forever" love story. I like it when the characters get along....I also like Twilight...forever love stories "get" me.

I already gave my opinion-liked the book. I gave it to my husband to read and he DID NOT like it at all. Neither of us liked the movie. And as far as the "science fiction" aspect-well, it's more a love story than SF story. Just that if you understand time travel (???) you'll like the Time Travel aspect-going back in time to meet a loved one, etc.

I liked the movie. When I tried the audiobook I couldn't get into it.
