I got a Kindle Fire for my birthday from my husband and daughter. So have you all read any good books lately? I prefer free or very reasonably priced. If you have a Kindle Fire what do you use it for besides books?

Scissors, do you have a facebook acct? If so, do a facebook search for dining downloads, pixel of ink, ereaders news today, ebook lovers, ereaderlove.com, & book bub. I also like literature lady, but she has moved to Alaska, and only has internet when she goes to town for supplies. If you don't have a facebook acct, try googling these. And you can certainly go to Amazon and search for free kindle books in the genre you like.

Enjoy it!. I also have some of my knitting patterns on it.

I have had my Kindle Fire since October; I think that's when they first came on the market, and I like it more, everyday. It's like a mini-computer--which I guess it is. I can access email, go on line, play games, read books--the list goes on and on. There are over 55,000 free Kindle books, so I'm sure you'll find something that you'd like to read.

For those looking for a "router" for sharing data over cell services, there are additional alternatives to using a USB dongle with a portable router: - A "mobile hotspot", a combined cellular "modem" and router in one small package. Offered by the major carriers. Cost- wise, it's like having another phone, you pay to buy the device and have a (usually 2 year)contract with monthly access and data usage charges. - Most smart phones can operate as a mobile hotspot. Also called "tethering". The advantage with this is that there's nothing additional to buy and (at least with some carriers) no contract is necessary. You can turn it off and on as you wish, and apply usage to the phone plan you already have. The disadvantage is if you're not plugged in, the steady stream of cell data and wifi usage will eat through your battery life. I don't know if a tethered connection can be encrypted. It's convenient for occasional use, with my carrier, it's $ 20 per month prorated for the days it's turned on, so it's like 70 cents per day.

just keep in mind that android tablets let you install the kindle app and the nook app so you can have all of those on one device. It really depends on your needs and wants as to what you get. the tablet with the best sound that I have owned was the vizio it had 3 speakers so no matter which direction you held it in you had stereo and the sound was fantastic. Wish more manufacturers would be more interested in the sound quality and take a lesson and put at least 3 or 4 speakers on them. I often struggle hearing with the one small speaker especially on my phone. I love love love my new Asus transformer tf300 10" tablet with dock but it too could use some improvement in the sound and speaker department. My husband still absolutely loves his lookbook in fact he now has his and mine and I am trying to make him transition over to my Vizio tablet so he has more options and can do other things on it. He is fighting me he wants to stick with his lookbook he is not a fan of the touch screen he keeps touching things by accident then I hear swearing lol. He is not a good student is all I have to say LOL That lookbook is extremely light weight you will not likely find any tablet that is that light.

you are very welcome. I subscribe to all three of those lists and get them daily takes only a few minutes to scan through to see if I am interested in any and if so it is just 2 clicks to get it into my library. My husband reads almost a book a day or so and I keep him well stocked up from those lists and good books too. Amazon also list one a day as a special and you can do a search there as well for free kindle books.

mudlady- You're sort of comparing apples to oranges. A Kindle Fire OS is much simpler and more limited in function than a PC's OS. You should simply buy the newest Kindle Fire and not worry. I suspect the device will fail physically before you have to worry about the OS being a problem. Amazon wants the Kindle Fire to work well for years to come: they don't want to alienate their ebook-buying customer base by introducing incompatibilities with new models. Finally, in all fairness to Microsoft, their ending of support for XP was no secret. They did maintain it for 12 years and warned people years before about the fact that support would be ending, and they even had three successor systems in release before they did end XP support. I have an old tablet that came with the latest OS available at the time -- XP -- and it's still functional. Just because support ended for that OS doesn't mean the software quits working. The best strategy is to buy current technology with the most current OS and use it. You may want something new in 10 years, but I don't think there is cause for alarm that an HDX 7 will suddenly turn into a lemon.

I use mine for reading, any internet access (including Garden Web, Facebook, Google, Pinterest, recipe browsing, etc), my NotesBuddy (which I also have installed on my PC and my smart phone - can then access the notes from any of the three), and a few games. My husband uses it pretty much exclusively for games. I use it pretty often when cooking. I can pull up a recipe online and prop the Kindle Fire up in the kitchen.

I have paid for very few books. I did buy several "Chicken soup for the Soul' books when they were on sale for a very reasonable price, but mostly I get only the free books. I use subscribe to Pixel of Ink, which Tami_Ohio mentioned above, and also a similar Christian book service (can't think of the name at the moment) and those keep me supplied with lists of plenty of free books to choose from. I download all that sound interesting, so always have a bunch just sitting there waiting to be read. I also used to subscribe to a notification for free recipe books, but haven't had an email from them for a long time now, so I'm thinking they might not be operating any longer.

Besides free books, I play games (mostly free ones). I play words with friends on my kindle only as I do that while watching tv in the evening or on a short break at work. I also check in to facebook sometimes instead of doing it on the comp or my phone.

Around here, you can use a Kindle to borrow books from the local library - you may want to check your local library.

sign up for the email alerts and letters from www.pixelofink.com and www.bookbub.com they are the best source for free and discounted kindle books, no need to have anything to do with Facebook at all.
I also get some from feedbooks.com you just have to select the kindle format for the download. I have hundreds and the majority come from those sites.

I did mention that facebook was not needed, but I do use it, and like getting my updates that way.

I also have Evernote installed on the computer, kindle fire, and my iphone, and keep them synced so I have my favorite recipes, patterns, and important info at my fingertips where ever I am.

Mine is a Kindle Fire HD, and I plug it into the TV to stream Netflix and youtube.

And books, of course.

I have many books on my Kindle Fire, games, police scanner app, and Facebook. I sometimes open the scanner app and then FB. While I am reading FB I can hear what is going on with police and fire here.

It is very important to download the free or discounted books as soon as you see them because in many cases they are only available for a very short time frame, so get them, if you decide later you don't want it then delete it. There's no limit to the number of books you can have in your amazon account.

Ha! Please don't even ask me where I got the name " NotesBuddy" in my earlier update. I have Evernote too, just like Tami! Actually... I think NotesBuddy was an old application we used to use at work... years ago. It was a Lotus Notes product and was some sort of a chat interface... flashback!!

Amazon also has a list of free books.. and they also have a sign-up for a daily deal via email.
