Clarkebar you would not want to use an impact driver on a drill bit. A drill is made of harden steal witch is brittle and would snap. It is a good tool to use to drive the fasteners and would save a lot of wear and tear on your drill.

Actually back in the earley days of the Makita 12 v impact drivers they did provide me a chuck conversion for the tool so a person could drive drill bits with it. J.

John and I am sure you bought it. Just because a company makes a conversion doesnÂt mean it is a good idea. As a "Contractor" you should know that. I know you are not a real contractor you just play one on TV. I just expected more from you because you are a good actor and usually make a little sense.

Back then Makita had a really good sales rep he gave me that thing along with several Makita tools just to try. It did work I have no idea why they made it. J.

I just do not understand how you can be on the computer so much and not have decent grammar rub off on you. To answer your question I maintain my rental properties and I install some decks once in a while along with replacement doors and windows. I realize I should specialize in just one job, but that is not me doing the same thing over and over tends to bore me. So here is a question for you MR. John how can you run a deck building company and be on line so much? You must be old and single with no life. I am only on here because I am between jobs right now, but you seem to live here. Well I have to go now but I will check back latter after I go look at a few properties, because this is becoming interesting to me now.

What did you do to all of these folks that has them up in arms about you ?

DM- you are a property manager. Are you a contractor also? Do you work for customers who pay money for the construction work you perform? While rental agreements are contracts, this does not make you a contractor. Heck, even the regular homeowner DIY has to please the wife.

You also consider yourself some sort of authority on the English language:

We know you mean hardened steel. It is OK; you can still be a good property manager. Judge workers by the work they produce, not by their grammar. Does an English professor need to be a good carpenter to prove their merit?

Just to keep this post relevant, if the drill bit has the 1/4" hex shank "power bit" base to that fits into the impact driver, you can use it for drilling with the impact driver. These bits are designed for higher torque applications. I have broken countless pilot bits with regular drills- both corded and cordless. Once the drill bit bogs down and gets stuck in the wood (especially Ipe) it is really difficult to remove it intact. From my experience the impact driver does not bog down as easily as a regular drill. The key is to not push as you drill. Let the drill bit cut into the wood and as it grabs and pulls down faster than the bit can cut, you have to pull back to avoid getting stuck. I have broken too many screws using the impact driver, so I prefer the clutch drill for setting screws. For the next Ipe project I am going to get a "smart bit" to drill the pilot holes. I have used "Fuller" and "Rockler" countersink bits in the past.

It's OK to go ahead and blast me- just sharing my experience. Please elaborate on your experiences as well.

The smartbit and the countersink bits are just too slow for my work but a lot of Contractors use them pretty sure thats all Steve uses. I screw down decking with a # 7 square drive so most of those rigs leave a bigger hole than I like as well. No problem using the impact driver for many years now but I can see some Folks having problems with them with out the right sweet talk.

Drill bits are a deal I have found the harder they are,like the cobalt treated bits,the faster they break just no room for any movement at all. I use the regular high speed bits from Bisco. I have still not found square point drivers of high quality we go thru a lot of those.

My intent was not to talk trash it just happened to end up that way. I was just simply attempting to give a reason why an impact driver should not be use, and not just a yes or no. Then Mr. Hyatt chimed in being condescending. I never really considered my self a property manger, but I guess I could. I just own a few rental properties, and I do my own repairs. I also have a company that installs replacement windows and doors. I also tend to find my self building a few decks a year. You know I do agree with you that a person should be judged by the work they do. It is just mind-boggling how some one can be on the computer so much and still run a company. Just browsing a few of the post it seem his name is on just about all of them. I guess I am just envious that he has so much free time to consult people and promote George.

With the economy tanking lately, it's lucky any of us deck builders have any work. Decks just aren't that important when you might lose your house.
John does spend alot of time here...helping people. He can't spell, and his grammar is bad, but you have to look past that. He's a deck builder, not a writer.
If you're gonna spend time here, you should spend it helping people, or discussing technique...not picking fights...so chill.

I've had a good year, but there's a lot of $ coming to Brooklyn these days. Still, I'm getting less than 25% of the jobs that I estimate. It's never been that low. Let's hope it turns around next year.

SO!!!...anyway

I have to disagree on the impact for drilling.Since MOST come with quick change chucks,....and spade bits and regular bits are equipped to fit. Not saying to use it as your primary drill, but you won't hurt it for the occassional hole or two.

I use my makita Li-ion impact for drilling on occasion cuz it's a lot smaller than the regular drill. But having them both rocking on a deck project is a nice time saver.

This can be one hellova hostile forum! It's funny to read over so many archived posts and see it continue here! I hope the vast majority of it is tongue in cheek.

Deck's now down. Roof is on its way up. The house is comming along well.

Some small mistakes with the deck that I can live with. The contracter was not as anal-retentive about screw depth as I would have liked but I'm not sweatin the small stuff. Lifes too short. I anticipate the decks will get trampled a bit as the work on the house continues. I will sand in about a month as finish them in the spring (considering twp, woodrich, and penofin) or sometime after we are dried in. I bought a 5" ro sander today and some 60 grit paper to play with. Seems to do what I want with the scrap piece I brought home.

Hey, any ideas for the scrap wood. I have several pieces that are 15x5.5 and half as many that are 8x5.5. I thought about making small box's (mabey a jewelry box for my girls) or bird houses ect. Hate to throw it away...probably comes out to about 4 dollars per piece of "long" scrap!

Although I felt a bit like I had gone home for Thanksgiving dinner with all the banter, thanks again for the help and the responses!
