Flooring for high traffic area?

I'm wondering--what do you think would be the best flooring for a really high traffic area? We've got a dog, a child and an two adults who constantly walk through the area.

I might mention the dog is a Springer Spaniel. Those of you who know and love one know why I'm concerned :)

Anyway, tile is out, as there's probably too much give in the floor. I'm also concerned with staying on budget, as most of us are--and my budget will allow for mid-range materials.

Any suggestions?

You could consider a really hard hardwood floor (look at the Janka scale) finished with tung oil rather than polyurethane...

Sheet Vinyl is an obvious thought for a high traffic area. Cork might be another consideration.

Vinyl is what was most obvious--it's what most people around here have. I'd just like to do something a little different. Good idea, though!

Cork--isn't that pretty soft? I know they seal it, but would it stand up to dog claws?

It should not be problematic on a decent Bruce product. They do make some junk with substandard finishes. A softer rubber styled mat would normally be of no concern . wood fading and discoloration would be more of a concern.

I have bamboo flooring in all rooms except the guest bedroom, the three bathrooms and the kitchen - those are tiled. I use warm water and alcohol to clean all my floors - 1,600 sq. ft. of space, and it does a wonderful job. We don't have soil to make our floors dirty - we have sugar sand, so I have to clean my floors with a vacuum made for picking up sand and pet hair, then twice a week, I scrub them. Bamboo flooring does get scratched easily, so I have area rugs in the high-traffic areas and by all the doors. Having a large area rug in the Florida room helps keep a lot of the sand out of the main house.

My friend has had it for about five years and two dogs lol. She just uses the Bona products with the Bona mop and it always looks gorgeous like the first day they installed it. I use the same product on my wood floors here.

hi secsteve: we installed strand-woven bamboo by HomeLegend with the 7-layer aluminum oxide finish throughout the house. i would not worry about your pup. we have a labrador mix who is spazzes every time we get near his paws, so needless to say his nails are not trimmed as frequently as they should be. we put the floors down 2 months ago and have yet to see a scratch from the dog. i'd worry more about furniture legs. we put felt tabs on the bottom of all the legs, but a couple of them came off, and we got a few scratches that way. also, trying to figure out how on earth to clean these suckers, what product to use exactly, was quite a task. i finally ended up getting P&M floor cleaner from National Vacuum. it's pH neutral and evaporates really quickly; honestly, i think it might just be Windex--looks just like it. i'm not 100% satisfied with it, but have yet to find anything better.

Julie ~ Have you looked into Wilsonart's laminates? There's a lot of very positive reviews on their product. I didn't want tile or hardwood because of the hardness on one's legs with tile, and I have hardwood everywhere else and wanted something different for the kitchen. I sent for a sample of the laminate "snap in" tile and I tried to destroy the sample with a screw driver and couldn't even leave a scratch. The cost for 280 sq.ft. was approx. $1400.
