I usually buy the sponge cake packs. I made some shortcake from a recipe and didn't care for it at all.

I just buy the sponge cakes. Or you could make a pound cake and slice it up.

Great. Now I want strawberry shortcake.

Found it, except I added more milk and poured it in a pan and baked it.

Classic bisquick shortcake

1 quart (4 cups) strawberries, sliced
1/4 cup sugar
2 1/3 cups Original Bisquick� mix
1/2 cup milk
3 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
1/2 cup whipping cream
Heat oven to 425�F. In large bowl, mix strawberries and 1/4 cup sugar; set aside.
2 In medium bowl, stir Bisquick mix, milk, 3 tablespoons sugar and the butter until soft dough forms. On ungreased cookie sheet, drop dough by 6 spoonfuls.
3 Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until golden brown. Meanwhile, in small bowl, beat whipping cream with electric mixer on high speed until soft peaks form.
4 Split warm shortcakes; fill and top with strawberries and whipped cream.

I use the bisquick, added sugar, then make it into biscuits, so good with strawberries and milk. makes me want some.

I love the hot milk cake that Pixiestix posted some years ago. It's good on its own, but with fruit, it's great, and not putzy to make. I don't care for biscuit type shortcakes, so this one works very well.

Here's one I've made for years.
Short Cake
1 1/4 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
3 eggs
1/3 cup HOT water
1/2 tsp lemon flavoring
Beat eggs til thick. Add sugar slowly. Blend in wet ingredients. Blend in dry ingredients. Grease and flour 9x9 pan. Bake at 350� for 25 to 30 minutes.

Don't care for the spongy cakes.

Shortcake, by definition is a sweet biscuit made with butter. Haven't made them for ages, but I have used Bisquick and it works very well. Bake the biscuit til it is kind of flaky; split in half, top with sliced, sweetened strawberries and add a dollop of whipped cream.

Learned that from my mother, except there was no Bisquick back when she made them.

I use angel food but somewhere I have my first boss' mother's shortcake recipe, it had pecans in it and was a biscuit/scone consistency. It is so good, I'm going to have to look for it!

I like either a white or yellow cake. We also like just pie crust pieces with strawberries and sugar and milk on it. I don't buy the sponge cakes.

With sponge cakes or other cake, it's really not "Strawberry Shortcake". It's strawberries on cake. It's fine and a lovely dessert, but it's not strawberry shortcake. Of course it isn't important, but they're 2 different desserts.

I love true strawberry shortcake, with "shortcakes" - or biscuits. And whipped cream. And sometimes also ice cream! Oh, yum.

Whatever I happen to have works for me but if I plan ahead, then I make an angel food cake........

My favorite strawberry shortcake is from a local restaurant. they have cake, strawberry ice cream , strawberries and whipped cream. in that order.

This year, I bought the mini orange & cranberry scones from Trader Joe's, & will use them insead of shortcake or the spongy cakes.
