Perhaps it would die if you sprayed it with Round-Up and covered it with thick, black plastic. You might want to double the plastic.

I know some invasive vines can be hard to kill.

Could you call a local nusery or garden center to see what they suggest?

I don't think black plastic for a few weeks will kill anything invasive. Without knowing what kind of vine it is, I would suggest a product such as Roundup.

Took me two years of pulling and cussing at the ivy in our driveway planter. I was lucky, it was waist high so I did not have to stoop. I think I eventually started pouring old,used cooking oil on it. BUT don't do that if you plan on planting anything there. Eventually I got grass to grow in it but for a year of so, it was just dirt (or mud).

If it is the vine that I have in my garden, nothing seems to kill it well ecept maybe Roundup. Using it may damage other plants though. All that little vine needs is an inch long piece of root left in the ground and it grows back like no tomorrow.

If the ground cover is honeysuckle, no black plastic won't kill it. That stuff is soo hard to eradicate.

Putting black plastic down for a week may kill the growth that you see above ground but it won't kill the roots. Then when you try to pull it out it'll break off and just regrow from the roots.

If you decide to use Round Up you can purchase the concentrated liquid rather than the ready to spray container. Then make the solution a little stronger than the recommended dilution - that's what my landscaper advised when we had to kill the poison ivy in our backyard.
It may take repeated spraying to kill the plant. You might even have to dig up the area to get to try and get any remaining roots. It's not easy!

Kath, take a branch/stem/long piece with root to your local extension center and let the horticulturist or a master gardener identify it. Ask what to use to eradicate it.

I would probably spray it with round up, and I would also put tendrils of the stuff in little cups of round up. I've read that then the round up will travel along the roots and kill the darn thing.

It's not honeysuckle, previous owner planted THAT in the backyard. There are cute little suculant plants on the side of that area that I want to keep, along with Lily of Valley and some ornamental grasses. I guess I'll have to Round up it or do what Moni suggested.

A week under plastic would do nothing. A year, maybe. Or use Roundup as suggested above.

I wouldn't recommend doing anything with cups of Roundup, though. You don't want to get it on your skin, or spill it into the ground. Roundup works by traveling to the roots when it's sprayed on the plant.

even here in orlando where we have 90 degree days for 3-4 months in a row, you can not kill something noxious under black plastic. forget about trying to kill sod, potato vine, sedges etc...the most vicious invasive weeds we've got, they can get h20 from the surrounding soil and make it thru.

i'd use roundup and maybe even the version i think it's called extended (it has a spreader/sticker) if there are surrounding plants you want to keep. careful w/ the spray drift, studies have found even tree bark takes up roundup and can kill trees that way. if there are no nearby plants you want then go to triox or brush kill. ~ liz

Liz, I'll have to move my ornamental peach too, which I forgot all about. It's right in the middle of it. If I use the Triox or brush kill, how long after can I plant something? Like flowers.

Do you have a county ag in your area? Or a very good nursery? They may have something that will kill bad stuff and not the good stuff. My son in law uses different products, but he gets the information from the county ag officer as he works at the courthouse.

You could also take a pic of it and put it on the forum linked below. They are really good at identifying plants. Once you know what it is, you can then find out the best way to eradicate it.

I found what worked best for me was Roundup for Brush/Blackberry/Poison Oak instead of the regular or extended Roundup. Good Luck

I'd try covering it with newspapers. Lack of sun will kill anything. And the newspaper will eventually decompose and help the soil.

Alexis has the correct solution to your problem. Regular roundup won't do the job for you, believe me I have tried.
The Roundup for brush really works well for any type vine.

I use 2-4D. It's sold as a concentrate at animal feed stores. I killed bull thistle with it!!! That's an accomplishment!

Use your black plastic to cover the plants you want to keep while you spray with Roundup. Pick a nice sunny day to do this as the sun helps the Roundup to work. Be sure to remove the plastic after the danger of contamination from the weed killer has past. This will take more than one application so be prepared to do it again. Good luck.
