Grease on Unfinished Ipe Deck

Well, the ribs were really good but a pan of grease spilled on my ipe deck. I poured hot water on it immediately and a few hours later scrubbed it with detergent and hot water with a plastic bristle brush. The cleaning didn't do much of anything.

It was installed summer 2004, full sun high off the ground and although I meant to finish it I never got around to it so it grayed. Now there's a dark grease stain and lighter stains where it splattered out over about a 3-4' area. When it rains, it really shows more.

Is there anything I can do to get the stain out ?

contact pressurepros and ask if the RAD will do it. He would also know what else to use.

The Restore-A-Deck cleaner will take the majority of it out. I have heard good results from people tackling this same issue. On the other hand I canot promise you that there will not be some type of shadowing. If you'd like to do more research, you can check the link below.

That first season is like having a new car. Just go out and put a scratch on it and get it over with! Its outside. I put plastic gliders on my IPE furniture and it still marks it up. A small rag with oil will clear it up. But over time food and scratches will happen. The real problem is the fine almost furniture quality a freashly oiled (and sealed) deck has. Its outside, get over it. One problem I have around my house is not enough time to enjoy it. Between matainence and commitments its hard to just sit on the deck and chill out! birds and berries? Berries I can't help you with but at least its warm and fuzzy to know that Ipe does will with buck shot.

Would love to see the photos, but when I click on it the only thing I get is a cat food commercial. I'm fairly new to this, what am I doing wrong? We are about to embark on a deck redo also and have looked extensively at Azek. I'm going to do the floor in Acacia color and the railing in Kona (because there is no railing in Acacia). To tie it together I'm going to have the second board in from the outside be in Kona and the Kona color railing will go on the outside board which will be the Acacia.....just trying to change it up a bit. Your comments are letting us know we are on the right track....especially about the ketchup and wine as we entertain outside a lot. Thanks for the informative post.

Seal it with a clear oil to prevent stains from getting a foothold. The best bet for you to try and get the stain out (it may be there for a long time) is to spray on some oven cleaner (look for sodium hydroxid as the key ingredient). Usually grease stains on untreated wood are permanent.

My "high-maintenance" period has now officially started. I'll probably be a big pain for the next 5-6 weeks until my deck is done. I'll post pictures and pass on anything I learn during the project though. Forgive my "homeowner" ignorance, but isn't Titebond 111 a construction adhesive? I was sure I saw somewhere else on this board that it was recommended to use the titebond on the joists and on the fascia. But I'm better off with a Liquid Nails type product then? OK, I will remove all thoughts of having to take off the decking ... you're right ... I need to focus on getting the boards down first! Thanks for the advice (and, as always in John's case, the chuckles). Birgit

Thanks for the responses. Is it true that I cannot spot clean it with RAD ? If there is shadowing will sanding that section have any effect on removing it or would I have to sand the entire deck ? Thanks for the link.

hey Jude,
don't worry about that stain. By april, it will have faded into obscurity. spot sanding would be a mistake. the sanded area will be very obvious...maybe worse than the stain.

Thanks steve. To be honest, that was the answer I was hoping for. Right now the rain is beading up on it so well that I wasn't sure that time would help that much. I thought that nothing soaked in to ipe - that grease sure did. I really do want to RAD the deck and finish it but I want the effort (or the money I spend for someone else to do it) to be worthwhile and I haven't heard consensus on the best finish to use (TWP 100 being unavailable in NY). As much as I'd like to see the original ipe color, I'm not too excited about cleaning and applying finish yearly.
