How to spot clean unfinished ipe

we have a brand new deck and screened in porch with ipe flooring - thanks to months of lurking on this forum! we decided not to finish the wood because we want it to grey. last weekend my mom was grilling a pork loin, and dropped it onto the deck, making a big grease stain. i tried to get it off with acetone. i tried deck cleaning. the stain is slightly faded but still very much there.

anyone have any ideas on getting it up?

if not, do i have to seal the floor to prevent this in the future? i really want the silvered grey look.

help!!!!

Seal it with a clear oil to prevent stains from getting a foothold. The best bet for you to try and get the stain out (it may be there for a long time) is to spray on some oven cleaner (look for sodium hydroxid as the key ingredient). Usually grease stains on untreated wood are permanent.

I have had great luck sanding out stains. I use a 5" orbital with 80 grit. The wood is so dense that the stain usually does not penetrate that far down into it. Of course, it will also remove the grey if your deck is already heading in that direction.

To get a perfect stain you may need to sand it down to bare wood. You could use a courser grit or carefully spot-scrape if you want the wood to remain textured. Not knowing your exact floor it is hard to give exact recommendations. Depending on the adhesive you used (Bostiks Best, etc) it is very unlikely anything will wipe it off after it is dried.

Great forum! I have decided to let those cans of Penofin lie dormant in my garage and go with a new product. I was considering TWP as George and Eddie at East Teak recommend. For me that is going to the dark side as I believe once you go for the sealer there is not turning back! Then the "Zodic" appears! Im looking at saving labor so this is very appealing! Quick question for both Obi Won and Darth TWP: Can I mop off the excess with a sponge mop instead of getting non hands an knees with Rags? With "Zodic", will I need two coats to get started? Can I spray on TWP on my Ipe Furniture and wipe off with rag? Ken, your saying we can use "zodic" on wood just a few hours after "Rad" treatment??? When is the "Zodic" site going to be ready? Bottom line is more competition means more choices! Thanks to all again for the great info on this site!

Thanks, Steve, What i meant by "milled badly" was that at one end of a board it would be 5.5inches width and at the other it would be 5.375inches. This required me to go thru all the boards to try and find matching width ends where they butted, or re-rip ten foot ipe boards on site using my Sears 10inch Harry the homeowner tablesaw. It wasnt pretty. The quality of the wood and the sanded sides seem good to me, just gotten dirty and a little gray. Its really noticeable whenever I wet it down. Wet looks incredible, but soon dries back to dusty gray. I will be testing a 50sqft area with sanding then finishing and if I like it better, I will tackle 50-100sqft every weekend until done. Or hire some helpers and get it all done in a week or so. Thanks again for the advice. And if you or Celeste is ever out here on the left coast near Santa Barbara, you should come by for a marguerita! Its really nice here when it isnt on fire, or earthquake, or flash flooding, or locust season, or an election, or... :)
