IPE T&G Porch

I am in the process of getting my 17 year old warped and peeling SYP covered porch floor replaced with IPE. After going in the crawl space under the porch I was surprised to see that the joist are running perpendicular to the house - the same way the flooring is running - with a sheet of plywood on top. Is this the norm? I expected to see the joist running parallel without plywood on top. I would think the plywood between the joists and floor boards would trap moisture - am I wrong? I will say the bottom of the plywood did not have any water stains or appear to have rotted anywhere, but I'm not sure how thick it is. So my question is, do I keep it the same way with plywood between the joist & flooring or do I now have to run the IPE boards on the front porch parallel to the house and possibly have to build up from the joists somehow depending on how thick the plywood is?
