Subfloor with IPE T&G

I want to use a subfloor with my next Ipe project on the front porch of my house but after I called my trusty Ipe guy John at Advantage Trim and Lumber he told me he wouldnt suggest it becuase there wouldnt be adequate air flow under the deck and that I might run in to some problems with the boards moving....Just wonder what the rest of you Pro's out there thought....

Joyce, John is right you don't want to put ipe over a sub floor. The moisture will build up under the boards between the ipe and subfloor, and the top of the boards will dry out faster. That will cause the boards to cup and warp on you. The guys at Ipe Depot have been working with ipe for awhile now and they really know what they are talking about. I buy all my ipe from them and they really help me out a lot. They always have some awesome sale going on it seems.

Thanks dmcon. I figured they knew what they where talking about it seems they always do but I just wanted to see if any one had an success with a sub floor thanks for the input

No gaps are needed. The existing planks shrank in the width. The ones that were just installed may do the same over time.

Ipe is Ipe. Decay resistance is not a problem. Install of T&G ipe is an issue with out any know how I do not recomend a diy er try it on with no input from a Pro. J.

My porch has a subfloor 3/4" plywood. It currently has a southern yellow pine flooring. The porch floor is protected by a full roof and a 24" overhang with full gutters. The porch lasted about 12 years before it was replaced. Now 10 years later with no refinishing or anything, it needs repairing & some boards need replacing. We are looking at IPE for the repairs The ply and subfloor has cross ventialltion under a 3' crawlspace that is always dry! even through our Florida rains. So the total system should be considered before a final decision. Good luck.
