I need new oven mitts, but

they are all so huge at the stores that I consider them unsafe. I have large hands for a woman, and the mitts are just too huge. If I picked up a hot, bubbling pan of lasagna, the "finger tips" would be right in the sauce.

Why can't they make nice quilted oven mitts to fit a woman's hand? I have been looking to replace mine for over a year.

Anyone have a good source for smaller, woman's sized mitts? I don't think my sewing machine would go through all the quilting, and I don't think I could find thick enough quilted fabric, to make them for myself.

I can't handle mitts. Prefer pot holders or a kitchen towel doubled.

How about the " Ove Glove?" It's a heat-proof glove, but unfortunately it's not long to go up your arm. Just covers your hand and wrist.

I recently bought the non-icon double ovens for my new kitchen. The Icons had smaller interiors--only 13.5 inches deep, IIRC--seemed very shallow to me. My non icon is a full inch deeper. The Icons also came with 3 rolling racks (non icon, two) and the door is different. It's flat on the inside, where the non icons have a conventionally shaped interior door. I liked the look of the Icon, but the interior dimensions were a deal breaker. BTW, I'm loving my ovens. They bake evenly, heat up quickly, and just generally do a beautiful job. Cj

We have not started our remodel yet, but as an avid cook thinking (dreaming!) about new appliances while cooking daily, I would definitely opt for a 2nd oven over a warming drawer. Good 2nd ovens would have low temps to keep plates/food warm so seem a lot more flexible and functional. Gaggenau ovens seems to be top end and have side opening doors. My dream is to have a double oven made up of a 1) Gag steam and 2) Gag convection oven, so maybe I'm projecting! :) We are only two people but I find in the winters we are often cooking two items that require different temperatures (e.g. bread and a slow braise) so to us a double oven will be well worth it, esp. with a steam oven which is relatively small and great for reheating. Wolf is another oven brand I hear consistently good things about but they are not side opening as far as I know. We'll probably also have a small microwave but I hardly use ours now - mostly for boiling water and I hope to have a hot water tap as part of the kitchen sink so I can't really advise on that account. Judy, I'm one of the "towel over the shoulder" people and I haven't caught a towel on fire yet, but I do have a gas stove and I'm just sure it's gonna happen... I also don't like the mitts and those silicone mitts are the worst EXCEPT when I'm canning. I can reach right into a boiling water bath and grab the handles of my canning rack to set it on the side of the canner. Booberry taught me that, I miss her... Here there are mostly cheap potholders too, the silicone potholders make great trivets and David loves them for taking hot radiator caps off trucks, LOL, but they're clumsy and not flexible enough. Maybe I'll try those leather ones before I DO catch a towel on fire. Annie

I have two ancient oven mitts that I'd love to replace but cannot find them anymore. They're thick (but not too thick) terry cloth, have a design of a covered casserole dish on one side (it says Oven on top and Mitt on bottom of the casserole); on the back it says Ritz. They fit my small hands perfectly. I used to see them everywhere back in the 80's. I wrote to Vermont Country Store to see if they could track them down but no luck. Someone told me to look online - but those Ritz mitts were not the same. I've bought new terry cloth mitts but they're too inflexible (my old ones protect me from the heat but I can grasp anything). And, these mitts measure 7-1/2" x 6-1/4"...nice and small :) I'm taking very good care of them until I can find a replacement.

I love my Ove Gloves. I had one for a long time, then DS gave me another for Christmas. The new one has silicone stips on it that are great for holding things - not slippery.

They are kind of expensive, and only come in singles - but they are really worth the cost. Best oven mit ever -and not even a mit. You have all 5 fingers like a glove.

You can also buy teflon fabric if you want to make some potholders/table pads. It is a silver looking fabric that you put inside the potholders.

Here is a link to Ove Gloves - mine came from K-Mart.

They are so soft and flexible. You can hold on to things without dipping the mit in.

They are made out of Nomex and Kevlar - same as firesuits.

I have the oven mit from Pamperd Chef and find it bulky and it's an ivory color.

Please if you make your own don't use that silver stuff from the fabric store for a mit or ironing board cover. It will burn you or your clothing when ironing. You are better off using terry cloth under your face fabric.

Hope you find something that works for you.

I don't the huge oven mitts either, to clumsy. I just reg pot holders on the rare occasion when I cook.

What about these new silicone mitts?
I don't have one, but gosh they sure sound good.

I hate the silicone ones. I tried one and it was not good. It was impossible to control.

Different brands may be better - but for me, it was a waste of money.

MsMarion - I haven't had any trouble with the teflon burning - but I do also have a cotton batting inside with it.

Never could get the hang of using oven mitts. Pot holders work fine for me, plus the nuisance of putting on and taking off mitts is frustrating. I can grab a pot holder or two and have a hot dish out of the oven much faster than I could put the mitts on and then take them off again.

Iowagirl It's something that I learned from the owner of one of the fabric stores I worked in. She had a customer who was badly burned.

I recommend the Ove Glove. I got one as a gift for xmas and thought I would hate it but I love it. They are very 'stretchy' and not as cumbersome to get on and off as I thought they would be. They are very flexible and make it easy to handle little things. I bought a second one so I can lift heavy things out of the oven with a good grip and not be afraid of it slipping.

I broil a lot in an electric oven and using a glove protects the tops of my hands from feeling like they are "cooking" if I am just checking the meat thermometer or sticking my hands in real quick.
