What should I do about this end? Showplace Cabinets
Comments (20)It is up to the KD- Showplace is obligated to provide specs and answer questions ahead of time. The specs are very clear. IF I were dealing with and did not know what was used to construct the cubby I'd call tech and have an answer in 10 minutes. It certainly sounds like the KD called and asked for a replacement rather than a solution. As I said he should be calling with a possible solution and asking for advice. Faulting Showplace is simply wrong. Attached is a jpeg with a likely solution to your existing problem 1/4" panle trimmed on the front with a "Flat.96" An alternate is decorative end panels but that would involve changing the molding as LWO noted AND you would really want to also have them on the bottom then. I also included one way the cabinet could have been ordered BUT that has other issues. First -dimensions of the wine cubby cannot be altered at all (which is not unusual for that item in most brands. I could order it altered, attached and specify what it was made from and the thickness in a hi end custom brand- at 3 times the cost) So for that solution- extending the sides down the wall cabinets need to be ordered 3" wider than the cubby AND the stile at the sides of the cubby becomes 1-1/2" plus 3/4" or 2-1/4". An alternative is to order the wall cabinet deeper and only 1-1/2" wider- that would hide the outside edge of the cubby. The only other options would have been to do something different (would have been my suggestion); build it completely on site out of parts, or add the panel and the flat as shown in the solution. Note that the solutions to the existing problem OR the alternatives would have cost the OP more money in the first place. The KD is responsible for some accommodation but not the whole ticket. Note that I don't like it either but I can tell you that there will be people who would go "ooh, solid wood, that's great"...one man's ceiling... Comments (5)In my opinion, any manufacturer would be better than Showplace cabinets from Showplace Wood Products, Inc. We completely remodeled our kitchen this year and purchased $18,000+ of Showplace cabinets from Showplace Wood Products, Inc. through a local dealer at the beginning of March, 2008. Worst decision I have made this year. We put down a 60% deposit and were told the cabinets would arrive in 5-6 weeks. They arrived more than 10 weeks later at the beginning of June. We did not receive our full order and what we received had numerous problems. Of what we did receive, 90% of the doors and drawer faces had flaws that required replacement. The flaws included: chip outs at the panel joins, door insert panels had the wrong side facing forwards, glue rag marks, inconsistent and poorly sanded drawer panel ends, and staining flaws. Three of the cabinets were the wrong size and had to be reordered. We were told the replacement order would be expedited due to the already lengthy delays we had experienced. Not true. After another 8 weeks we received the replacement cabinets but had to wait another few weeks for the door and drawer faces (due to the significant number of flaws they had to have a special meeting which dragged the process out even longer). When they did arrive about 30% of the replacements had flaws that required they also be replaced. The dealer and Showplace's manufacturer's rep assured me they would be replaced. It is now the middle of October and our kitchen is still not finished. The dealer hasn't returned calls for 4 weeks. The manufacturer's rep on the other hand has returned calls and is looking into the situation. Other than the poor delivery time, slow customer service, and poor quality finishing, I would also add that the cabinets do not have the build quality I expected or was led to believe that I would receive. On the plus side, the design is very nice, the frontal appearance is very good, and drawer construction is very solid. On the negative, the cabinet walls are only 3/8" plywood construction and the backs are at best an 1/8". The cabinets are poorly braced and my cabinet installer had to rebuild the oven cabinet so it would support our built-in oven. The thin wall construction means that the cabinets 'rack' easily making it very difficult for my cabinet installer to true them up during installation. But you will not find the cabinet wall thickness mentioned in any of Showplace's marketing materials. I sifted through their website and .pdf materials but cabinet wall thickness is artfully omitted. In my opinion these cabinets look good but are not built to last. I have since learned that I could have had custom cabinets built with much higher quality for equivalent dollars. And if I had, my kitchen would be complete by now. My dealer told us we could expect our cabinet install to take 3-6 weeks from the time the cabinets arrived. It is now 5 months and it is still not done....See MoreHas anyone used Showplace Cabinets?
Comments (9)Jakuval here- first- my mantra-who you buy from is more important than what brand you buy. Second- I've carried SWP for 5 years, only brand I have at that price (all but one are more) I have not sold much SWP in the last year. That has nothing to do with them, just customer choices and pricing. I happen to have a regional brand of a slightly nicer cabinet that prices exceptionally well and many have opted to move up to that. (particularly when comparing to SWP's veneer interior option) I have seen a few posts on this forum in the last two years indicating what may be some growing pains (one was not getting satisfaction from KD and I forwarded post to my rep to send to HQ, was resolved next day) As they have grown I have run into small issues with tech support. Nothing more than new trainees not quite as astute. It simply means I have to pay attention, something I do anyway. As I re-read this it sounds a bit like a sales pitch. I did not intend that so apologize if any are offended. This is my experience, no more no less and I was mentioned. We are a small dealer so have not done hundreds of kitchens in any brand we carry (though I have over the years done a couple of thousand) My experience with companies at this price point and size is that there can always be occasional issues and that things can change in a short period of time (particularly during expansions) Point is take anything anyone says about any brand with a grain of salt. Overall-consistency of construction has been good to excellent, failure rate-zero, delivered damaged-rare, on time delivery-100%, design flexibility super,CS is very good, responsiveness-couldn't ask for more. Paints Over the last 5 yrs I've done quite a few SWP paints with zero issues. I think they have one of the best paint finishes at the price out there, comparable to higher end brands and have used them in secondary rooms in homes where we were doing much more expensive brands. I especially like the matte finish option, rare at the price point and NC. I don't like the standard (free) glaze on paint, I do like (as do many clients) the brushed and vintage paints, well done for the price point but not free. I am most often doing paint on "Paint Grade" instead of Maple but you want to understand the details of those choices. Talk with KD. Washes and consistency Since this came up I'll address this first- Showplace grey washes are not simple stains and specifically noted to have more variation. They have a standard "Finish Advisory" form the dealer is supposed to have you read and sign. NOTE that there is a bit of contradiction between what SWP has on it's website re washes and what the spec book says. IRL the spec book is accurate. I have run into issues with edges not being properly covered. It was taken care of by SWP for me. Stains To date my experience has been very good- wood grading above average for the price, consistency of color overall better than most AT THE PRICE. There are a few stains on maple that I avoid completely, not unusual for any brand. Construction I have no issue with the material used for the 1/2" ply upgrade (quite the contrary) but think it best when clients are aware of all details prior to purchase. Shelf clips- this has been a thorn in my side and they are aware of my feelings on these. They did look into changing them a couple of years ago- didn't happen. SOP I order a bag of clips with every job. Those are the ones with a metal post and plastic shelf section (they supply them standard for glass cabinets) Then I break the existing shelf clips and replace. I have not run into an issue with drawer bottoms deflecting excessively as noted elsewhere. I will try to find out if the material has changed but note that 1/4" drawer bottoms is so common as to be SOP at even higher price points. I do get heavy duty drawers for pots and pans etc, an optional extra expense. My only other complaint has been with the backs of the cabinets. It's not that they are inadequate, just that to me they should be a bit (just a little) better selected material. . Frameless- SWP is bringing out a frameless line next month. They built a new facility to do that (expansion) I have only seen the specs not actual product yet. My rep is stopping by in a couple of weeks so I have nothing to say until I see for myself. While I am reserving judgment, going in, on paper, I'm not crazy about the drawer box spec....See MoreAny Recent Showplace Cabinet Experience?
Comments (9)Thanks for the advice, Jakuval. (Correct, traditional overlay in my kitchen.) However, I don't want to start messing with these adjustments and making things worse: when I call the dealer and his installation crew back in, they'll say I messed it up. Yes, 1/16" is indeed noticeable to the eye (so, you can imagine the 3/16"s!). I immediately emailed the owner and itemized all of the drawers that were off. He came the next day, took one look, and said, "Hmmm, I don't see any problems here. What's the problem?" Geez, did you not read my detailed email, or are you trying to be funny? He made me point out all the different areas where the drawers didn't align (whether due to size or installation). His comment: "Seriously?! Your eyes can actually see that?" It has been a very rocky road with our dealer. ckahmah: Despite our regional manager being called to the house for a meeting, to lend what advice he could give, at the end of the day you'll need to communicate with SP through your dealer. They/SP don't like to get between a dealer and the customer, as your/customer's business relationship is directly with the dealer. We actually did have huge issues with our appliance cabinet. Turns out either the KD mis-measured the space or she didn't review the oven specs carefully enough. KD told me the 'universal' cabinet shown in her catalog wasn't specific enough. After we rejected their/dealer's proposed remedy (their guy would basically take a saw to the entire cabinet, hack it apart, and rebuild it in our space), we said no go: we didn't pay for a hacked up cabinet to be installed. I realized this was the right call after I double, triple and quadruple checked the specs: the cabinet ordered wasn't even the right width. A new one was re-ordered to spec, on their dime....See Morekompy
