Do you get a lot of natural light? That would be my only concern with dark cabinets.

The black Crown Point kitchen in their Early American gallery is one of my all-time favorites! So I'm not going to talk you out of it. And as fantastic as mindimoo's kitchen looks with her dark cabinets (black or almost black) and marble counters, I think you should trust your plan. (I thought I had bookmarked hers, but can't find it) I can't wait to see it.

I have seen pics of all-black kitchen cabinets and thought they looked great and I have painted some furniture in all black and really loved how they turn out. Your vision along with the marble sounds like it's going to be a verrry nice kitchen--will look forward to pics.

I think it sounds marvelous. I have always wanted to do a "wrought" or deep green color on cabinetry. (Sim. To BM 'Tate olive' or a bit darker). I think deep rich solidly colored cabinets are exquisite.

If Black is a lamp black or flat tone- might I suggest adding a touch (just a little) bit of yellow. I do this on any black that I use exterior or interior. It just gives it a more organic and richer, fuller dimension.

I've used milk paint several times on the interior of cupboards, never on surfaces that get continued wear. If I recall, it very durable but flat (ie chalky). What type of finish are you planning on having...?? Long ago when I used it there weren't as many options as I am sure there are now.

I'd love to know more... Intrigued and excited for you.

What is the rest of your home like? Age of house? Style? Etc. I think it takes the "right" mixture of house, elements and owner to pull off a dramatic kitchen like the one you are planning. They tend to have a life of their own, opposed to being an appendage of the "rest of the house".

All the details of a kitchen redo will make anyones head swim. Remember to come up for air, every once in a while!

I think with CP, you'll be happy no matter what you do. But the black sounds absolutely amazing with the smaller glass windows on the uppers. Even if it were only a partial glass 'window' on the uppers. All with marble.. and the floors.. wow... stunning, stunning, stunning.

I think the black will be great with marble and glass! We went with quartersawn oak in the candlight stain-- they arrive tomorrow. I'm so, so excited! CP does such beautiful work, I can't imagine anything you get being less than perfect.

We're also getting marble on our island.. we have very slanty floors too (old farmhouse), so we are all about patina.

I think it sounds great too. We went w/the newport in antique white, w/soapstone counters (and a few glass uppers), so yours will be like the negative of ours. My only advice is maybe go w/lighter walls and/or backsplash, and make sure to have good overhead lighting -- it will be dramatic and classic.

Another owner of an old house with greenish black milk paint here! I love MP & it blends beautifully with historic houses.

I didn't finish all the cabs in black since they go all the way to the 11' ceiling (or close to it) & I was afraid it would be too cave-like; the room gets a decent amount of light but it's all indirect so not overly bright. Cabinetry on the darker side of the room is white semi-gloss - or at least it will be if I ever finish painting it!

Pictures are midway through the following post. When people come to the house for the first time, they always comment on the 'black' cabinets even though to my eye they are not.

Oh thanks everyone for your valuable input. I thought this kitchen reno might have actually driven me mad and my "vision" may actually just be a deranged delusion! It feels good to know that others are in my corner with the black cabinet thing :)

Let me give you a few details about my house. It's an 1870 queen anne victorian style house. The previous owners lived here for over 50yrs and they were elderly, so you can imagine how much work it needs. We are slowly pecking away at it but.. ya touch one thing and two more things go wrong! We are actually putting on an entire addition that will include my new kitchen, a large walk in pantry, a second bath (YIPPIE) and the new entrance to the house with a foyer.

We will get direct sunlight in the kitchen from about noon on, so I think it can handle the dark cabs. The milk paint finish is a flat, chalky black color. I am not sure of the finish though. Can ya pick that? I did not realize this.

our slate blue milk paint island arrived today from CP (along with the rest of our cabinet order, which is done in QS oak). the finish is very, very nice. We had a few minor cosmetic problems (very, very minor), otherwise we are beyond thrilled with everything. we have an old farmhouse (1800's) and the milk paint really looks like it belongs in our home.
