Can I use this machine to quilt???

Hi,

I have the top of my first easy quilt stitched & ready to sandwich and finish. It's about 60 x 80 in size, I am not sure if my Pfaff is a good choice to try and quilt it with - it's not a long arm machine and it looks pretty tight to stitch a full size blanket up. However, I do have another machine - a Juki industrial with a longer arm.

Should I try to do my quilting on it? If so, I need to order some needles and thread. I have used size 10 needles on it for leather working - anyone know what size I'd need for quilting? Sorry to be such a clueless NOOB! And thanks in advance!!!!

Use the Juki .It would be best to ask were you buy your needles for that machine on the size for quilting..... it may take DBX needle.

Thanks - when we traded for the machine several years back (it was in a factory), they gave me some needle packs and I've not had to buy any though I'm finally down to my last one. I'm not even sure where to buy them. No one local carries the size... Sew True may carry them. Has anyone ordered from them?

Yes, you can use the color twist but I don't think you would want to use that all the time since it has two colors twisted together. I think that you need to look at your projects and decide what type of thread you want. The only designs I've used the twist thread on is my sock monkey designs. I have an assortment of rayon and polyester thread. I want to purchase some DMC cotton embroidery thread to try some heirloom designs. I've had good luck with Marathon thread. I also bought lots of WonderFil and Hilos Iris polyester thread while at the Chicago quilt show. So far, those brands are doing the job for me. The Viking store that I shop at has Sulky and RA rayon threads. So I do use rayon also. If you are a beginner, you will probably read that everyone has a preference or should I say their machines have a preference on which thread is used. I have heard differing opinions on the ThreadArt Thread. But honestly, I don't remember if it had to do with embroidery thread or quilting thread.

I've done queen & king sized quilts on my regular sewing machine. It is definitely a task, with an exercise in patience and tenacity. A walking foot is a must, so you are there and ready. If you choose to go with the machine, you'll want to find an easy pattern. I suggest straight lines going in both directions to form a grid. This can be by following the intersections of your blocks, or just from corner to corner of your quilt, or straight line grids from side to side. One of my first I took blue painter's tape and placed it from the corner of the quilt to the opposing corner. Then stitched along one side of the tape. Then moved X number of inches over and did it again one until I reached the corner. I then worked from the first line out in the other direction. And repeated the entire process so the cross-hatch grid was created. There are many possibilities depending on your quilt. Can you post a picture for us to see? THen maybe we can help more. I'm the self-designated queen of making it work! I've done lots of large quilts on my standard machine. It is definitely possible, though it might wear you out!

Here are several All-By-Machine quilt-as-you-go methods that I am familiar with. First, several tutorials on how to join pre-quilted blocks all by machine on the TreadleOn website. Good instructions and photos. You can use this method with any pre-quilted blocks that can be joined with sashing. Treadleon Web Site - Joining quilted blocks with sashing all-by-machine tutorial There are two books by Sharon Pedersen that have patterns for quilt-as-you-go quilts that are reversible - two different designs on each side of the quilt. You piece and quilt the blocks one at a time, quilting each block as you go. She uses a similar method as the one above (but somewhat more elegant) to join the blocks. The second book expands on that technique; there are some patterns in that book that don't look like they've been joined with sashing at all. In both books, the instructions and illustrations are excellent. Once you understand the techniques, you can apply them to your own designs. These can be done all by machine. Reversible Quilts Two at a Time More Reversible Quilts 11 New Projects Another method that can be done all by machine are the Cotton Theory designs. You quilt individual units, that you join into blocks with wide seam allowances, fold the seam allowances under, then stitch with decorative stitches. You join the blocks the same way. In this method you are dealing with units smaller than an individual block. You can watch videos of how this is done on the Sewing With Nancy website. Glenda, I have the Juki on a Pennywinkle frame. And for years I had troubles and frustrations. This is what I've finally figured out that has now made quilting a dream! I can do a lapquilt pantograph usually with 1-2 thread breaks and one needle! I spent a huge amount of time (I mean years!) trying to adjust tension, threads, needles, you name it. The Juki is super temperamental about thread!! The ONLY thread I can use successfully is Superior thread (I like King Tut) on the top and their Bottom Line thread in the bobbin. I've tried Marathon thread once and had success, but haven't tried it again so can't give a full review. I have also found that I need to use a 'jeans' size needle. Brand doesn't seem to matter. I'm not sure of the numbers...is it a 16 maybe? I do work left-right because that's the only way I can see on my frame. Machine speed vs. your speed is something to practice and learn. If they aren't in balance the needle & thread can break because you're asking too much of it. Make sure your machine is clean inside...it doesn't like to be dirty in the bobbin area. Good luck. I have a Juki. It uses regular needles, not the DBX, so you can get them at any JoAnn's or other fabric stores. Mine came with size 14 needles, and I've also used size 16.

Thanks Donna!!!!!! I wondered if the people who had the machine before had given me some special needles for sewing neoprene, they made wetsuits. I will pop a regular needle in and try it. I will be overjoyed if it works!

Thanks for the size info, too. It helps alot. All I've used is that big old #69 bonded nylon thread, this is new to me.

Grandma has her old quilt frame so I can do the pin basting, I have a packet of merino lining and the backing, and bunches of Gutermann thread - I might be able to finish a quilt! How exciting!

Michelle, my Juki is a different model than the one in your picture, so yours may take a different needle. The ones you have may have the size & type engraved on it. The one thing about mine that is different is the needle goes in sideways so that the flat part is on the right instead of in the back.

Thanks - Red, I used that size info to call around and finally found a local company that would sell me a set of needles. :-) So now the needles are in hand, I picked up a big spool of thread, and I'm ready to rumble.

I appreciate the help sorting this out! My Juki is still a bit of a mystery to me. A dangerous, fast, finger eating mystery...

It turns out the needles I got with it were for sewing neoprene, and the 135 x 17's are the right thing. They only had the larger size, but my fingers are crossed that it will work.
