When it rains, it pours

So we're four weeks into our reno, living between our upstairs where the bedrooms are, and downstairs which used to be an in-law suite. We're not too hard done by but as many of you have experienced, the mess is killing my DW. Here's where the "when it rains, it pours" part comes in. We headed out yesterday morning to do some shopping, about three hours worth and came home to a ruptured hot water tank and a flooded downstairs. Our downstairs is on slab so the carpet is soaked, hardwood is shot. There are industrial fans and a dehumidifier running constantly making it difficult to live and sleep. DW is trying to hold back the tears and I keep telling reminding her what a beautiful kitchen she'll have when it's all over, right?

Right. I suggest getting her an appointment for a pedi and massage. And greeting her with wine when she comes back.

Luckily this happened before the kitchen was installed! I am sorry that it happened AT ALL, and I hope that things get cleaned up quickly. No one needs these surprises ever.

Oh no!!! I'm so sorry. Our hot water heater is going on 20 yrs old & I keep bugging DH to have it replaced before our basement turns into a swimming pool. I think I'm just going to call the plumber myself now!!

Before you know it, everything will be all cleaned up & you will be enjoying your brand new kitchen :)

Clarion - it is actually a different ceiling that had the plumbing problem! this one is a drywall replacement on the first floor... yes confusing to have TWO different ceiling issues I know UG! :) I think the reasons you mentioned above are exactly why we have to replace so much. His plan is to cut out the drain at some point and install a PVC splice, because the drain lines were installed nearly agains the flor, and very close to the joists we have to go back kinda far to give him the room to do that. We only really have access from below (the downstairs ceiling) as the bathroom floor has wood and then tile added, we would have to bust up perfectly good tile. I can already hear the plumbing from that drain and am not really offended. The room that can hear it is the downstairs bathroom... columbusguy1 - I feel pretty confident he actually needs to go back that far to do the work. He suggested we remove the ceiling ourselves and kept stopping by to check on it what would be needed before actually scheduling the work. We also brought up the idea of, if we are replacing these pipes should we move them, because long term the placement of them is not what we want, and he said that is going to be a lot more money... We will see on the noise, I will take noise over leaking though :)

Cindy I am so sorry for your loss. What a beautiful boy he was. I know how much it hurts to lose one's furbaby. No other dog can ever take their place because they have laid claim to a piece of your heart that will always belong to only them. If you are like me tho, you will always find room in your heart for one more to claim a place as their own. There are so many out there who need loving homes just as Rusty did. Your heart will tell you when it's time to rescue/adopt another. It hurts so badly to lose them but the joy and love they bring while they are with us can never be equaled. My prayers are with you and Ginger.

So sorry that all that is happening to you. Wow, great attitude. When life has throw dh and I punches somehow my dh will say some crazy far out statement that will get me to laughing and things don't seem so bad. Two that I can remember are - There is always a light at the end of the tunnel with a big gorilla holding a flashlight, and after every storm there is a silver lining-wait! That's a big bolt of lighting about to zap your arse! I don't know why but he will make up some darn awful statement like that and things won't seem so bad. Maybe it is just him and his attitude.(:-) Things will always get better...(:-)

Thanks guys for the " cool " feedback. ( smile ) Now have a more recent discovery to relate ! Am still somewhat speechless ! About 2 hrs ago, this mornin' I went out to visually check on my plantation,..look at my current girlfriend first, that almost 3 week old, ever blossoming Goldfinger banana stalk. " Hmmm, about 3 inches longer, just overnight,...wait, something different,..what ? Could it be TRUE ??? There are now TEN ( 10 ) hands clearly developing. " This is insane,..maybe I made a mistake,..count 'em again while lookin' closer,..yikes, it's true !! That amazing stalk NOW HAS TEN " HANDS " OF BANANAS !! What have I created here ? Never saw a nine hand stalk,..now it's grown into a ten hand one. Just had to let my fellow GW'ers know. Will take another photo when it's done growin',..will probably need a wide angle lens !!!

I am so sorry. We had the same thing happen right after we finished remodeling our basement. We had 1200 sq. ft. of laminate flooring. It was a disaster. It all had to go.

Make sure you get everything cleaned properly after you get the water up. The first guys our insurance company sent out did not even want to pull up the plastic underlayment! Duh! There was so much water under there. It was kind of shocking how fast the mold started growing.

Almost the same thing happened to me. I'm in the middle of planning my kitchen reno, and a frozen pipe caused a leak and extensive water damage downstairs. It will take months to get the repairs completed.

I second the idea of wine...lots of wine. Good luck.

Oh what an awful turn of bad luck. I'm so sorry that you have the crisis to deal with, and wish you all the best in clean up and repairs. You're just great to be so concerned about your DW, and I admire you for it. At the same time, I hope you will take equally good care of yourself, having experienced the same trauma in your home. It may cost you some out of pocket dollars (beyond insurance), but I hope you'll both consider it money wisely invested to regain your quality of life.

You might want to look into a tankless water heater .
