Leather Finish for Granite- any maintenance problems?
Comments (13)I got 4 samples of leathered black/gray/dark brown granite, Uba Tuba being one. We decided to go with Impala Black which I hope will be installed within a week. The large slab of Uba Tuba leathered at the supplier did catch my eye and I was surprised when I read the label. I thought it looked very nice. (I think it looks nice anyway, I was just surprised because I didn't recognize it.) On the sample, the finish looks waxy and I can see brush or cloth marks where the resin was applied. However, if I didn't have anything else to compare it to or another choice, I might have chosen the UT leathered. The Impala didn't show any brush marks or anything. I have tried several things on all the samples with nothing leaving a lasting mark. As far as sealing, some of the darker granites generally don't need it, though I can't get anyone in my area to agree that they would not seal any of the stones they work with. The prevailing attitude among suppliers and fabricators alike seems to be "better to seal it to be safe" but from what I've heard here, sealing ones that are not supposed to be sealed is not necessarily safe. nclakehouse, do you know what stone you have? Just curious... I'm done looking but it's always good to gather more experience in general....See MoreAdvice Needed: Apron front sink and granite laminate edge
Comments (5)Not sure if the pictures help or not, but here goes... Kitchen (please ignore stain, it's on round one!) Close up of island, with bump out sink: I went to the fabricator's shop today and they think they found a way to make it work, but since they initially had concerns, I would love to see how anyone else dealt with this issue....See MoreEdging on Leathered black mist granite?
Comments (6)My pencil edge and the cut edges were hand leathered at no extra cost. Mine go with the leathered finish....have the same finish feel as the tops. However, not all granites leather the same. I think your black mist will have a finer texture feel than my leathered stone. LOVE leathered and brushed granite....so nice to “pet”!...See MoreBlack granite counters with matching backsplash in leathered finish?
Comments (18)I have leathered antique brown granite. It is actually black despite the name. I really like it. You could have your perimeter counters installed and then decide after if you want to continue the black on the backsplash. You might find that it is too dark. One unexpected nice thing about the leathered finish is that at night, when the lights are on inside but it's dark outside, little shiny patterns appear when a place on the countertop catches the light just so. It's a nice little surprise. And I do find that it hides fingerprints pretty much 100%. On our island we have polished white macaubus quartzite. I like the contrast, but not everyone likes so many different finishes in a kitchen. Agree about the by-the-hour designer if you can find one that will do that. A few hours here and there from a designer when I was doing the kitchen was really helpful. I think over the course of the whole remodel, I had 3 meetings of about an hour each to choose materials, discuss some wonky things about the cabinets and make a decision, and then near the end to make some final finishing touch decisions....See Morejrueter
