Combining glass and ceramic tile on a backsplash

I am tiling my backsplash with a couple of issues. Most of the backsplash will be ceramic tiles with uneven edges like travertine. I am assuming that I will need to use sanded grout on them since the grout line will vary but probably be more than 1/4 in. in a number of places. I am using a glass mosaic in a 4 in strip around the backsplash that will need unsanded grout. Should I lay and grout the ceramic tile before I lay the glass since the sanded grout may scratch the glass?

Also, the glass tiles are not quite as thick as the ceramic ones. If I put a strip of 1/8in. luan under them they are perfect. is there a problem with that?? My husband is sure that it would be a bad idea. He thinks water would get in and ruin the luan and the tile. The strip will be 4 in. Above counter level. Is there something I can do to minimize the possibility of a problem?

Thanks so much for all your help.
