Comments (4)Hello Cumpani, 1) The answer is...kinda?!?!? Solid stains show the TEXTURE of the grain, but don't show the grain. On new/uncoated wood, even solid stains soak in SOME, but not as much as S/T stains. 2) This one's easy! "Porch & Floor" paints are actual PAINTS, with tougher binders/resins that'll handle being walked on. If you have an exterior "covered space", like an old-fashioned porch, Porch & Floor paints look nice. * Because this is PAINT, the film(s) sit on top. * You don't see any wood grain or texture. * Many brands don't need a "floor" primer, but some do better with one. * Often, the first coat is thinned slightly with water to aid in some penetration; while the 2nd coat goes on undiluted. * Exterior colors fade. Some more than others...no getting around it! 3) Do you want to change your Porch/Floor paint to a stained look? You've got a lot of work ahead of you if so! * If it's in good shape, and only fading, just use a mild deck/siding cleaner & lightly scrub/rinse/let dry. * Now just use a pole-sander and lightly sand each board some (use 120-grit paper). Ya don't hafta sand through any finish...just to dull the existing paint and smooth of any ridges. * Get all dust off. Use a light wipe with paint-thinner. >>> Now you've got the IDEAL surface for painting!! CLEAN...DRY...DULL. Apply a full "maintenance" coat of your P & F paint, and call it good!! >>> I suggested THIS route since you said nothing's peeling! Just fading, which is to be expected. Each time this subject comes up I learn a little more about stains and sealers... but here's a few more questions.... Ken I checked your website and couldn't find any add'l info re 'grey away'. I'm wondering if I will be able to obtain it via your site or somewhere else sometime soon?? Are you allowed to mention that on the thread? Sweets, wow your wood looks nice! It's almost convinced me to go with the 516. I'm still not clear if it is film forming or not, however...one website site says no another says yes. It sounds like it's only film forming if you layer it on?? Maybe John can clear this up. If I start with the 516 can I switch to something else next year without totally stripping the deck? I'm now clear that 516 has the same color as 116, right? Again, if I go with Ready seal, which color? They only have 6 choices and I'm wondering which of the med or dark tones (reds or browns) offer the most natural color? And finally, does anyone have more info. re wood tux? What makes it so great? Is it always custom colored? Is it film forming? I seldom hear it mentioned on this site...is that because it's so difficult to apply? Comments (6)Andersog, If you are looking for a 1 coat system using TWP I suggest you review the posts "review of rad system and twp #516 on ipe deck". "Sweet11395" put down a single coat of TWP 516 and it faded badly in just a few weeks. He intends to put a second coat down. Pressurepros is generally against putting a second coat over a dry coat of TWP because he believes it will form a film which will eventually have to be stripped off. John Hyatt disagrees, but has yet to post any pictures of his deck with multiple coats. I had a single coat of ATO (low VOC formular) put on my Ipe deck, which gets a lot of sun. After 4 months it has faded quite a bit, but still looks acceptable. Essentially it looked good during the late spring - Fall season. Comments (41)Jim, I just cant see you diging up really old posts, going on and on about it, with out some type of goal. Exactley what are you trying to prove??? Go to my site, All the ipe projects have 116 on them. As you can see they are not Red or Redwood or anything close to that. Saying it is makes me Mad clear and simple. Now if you put 116 on say preasure treated,garapa or any light color wood then Yes its going to come out a different color than 116 on ipe. This is basic 101 wood finish. Any of the resin base twp products can be mixed together to come up with a different color. I have used combos like that when puting finish on Garapa and other woods. I put cedar tone natural on ipe one time because the Wallet asked for it the result was bad but I did what they wanted however for ipe its most always the 116. Ipe itself is not one color it ranges from almost black to a light tan 116 levals out the differances but the result is not Red. Any color chip you get from Any finish store is going to be different on another kind of wood other than the wood used on the chip you cant expect them to have samples of finish on every kind of product. Just get off it Man. Its up to the Customer to know if one finish is the right one for them. There is no way twp is showing product online / samples / or color chips that dont match up with what they sell. You might not agree with what they call it if so just pick another name for your self and call it that but it Defentley is what they say it is and what they say they sell is what they sell.
