Recommendation for Test Kit - Colorblind.....

Looking for a recommendation on a test kit. I can dip and count drops, but I'm colorblind and can't tell the differences in the shades of colors produced. I don't really want to rely on a pool service or taking my water into a local retailer. Any suggestions?

Can you tell if a liquid is clear or slightly colored?

The TF100 only needs hue color judgment for pH tests IIRC. http://tftestkits.net/splash-page.html Ask the owner at the web site - really good guy.

You might then look into a pH meter.

Can you describe how your color blindness manifests itself? Not all CB traits are the same for all people.

I would never trust a home test. Having said that, I do use them. What a hypocrite, huh. You should always get a test done by the local extension office. I get one about every three years and use the home test just to check each year. I don't usually have to adjust much, since I grow cover crops and use lots and lost of compost. Don't ever buy a cheap one.

Recommend a good soil testing kit?

None of the do-it-yourself soil tests are recommended. Highly noted for poor results and inaccuracy that can easily lead you off in the wrong direction. Professional soil testing, available from your county extension service and/or any state university for a minimal fee is the standard recommendation. Dave

That was my first thought -- that my water was very hard, and that it was going to take a LOT of vinegar to get it to the right pH. At that point, I began considering a stronger acid. In the meantime, I decided to go with a 1/4 cup of vinegar per gallon in the hope that this would be good enough. Soon thereafter, I began noticing chlorotic leaves on some rabbiteyes, and then it expanded to several highbush cultivars, as well. For a few reasons, this didn't make sense as high pH induced, and I began to wonder if I had the opposite problem. So I bought the General Hydroponics kit, tested my irrigation water (with fertilizer and 1/4 cup of vinegar per gallon), and discovered that the pH was below 4. I dialed back the vinegar until the color was in the 5.5 range, which turned out to be a ratio of approximately 1/2 to 3/4 tbsp of vinegar per gallon of water. I've been watering at that rate for several weeks now, and the formerly chlorotic leaves are greening up nicely. There might be another factor at play, but, at this point, I'm trusting the General Hydroponics reading.

I would recommend staying away from the test strips (specially the pH type). They tend to be inaccurate and have a rather short shelf-life based on my experiences. The liquid types may be a bit more expensive but have better accuracy, and cost lest per test over the long run. I've had very good luck with Aquarium Pharmaceutical products - an example of a Google search for price is shown below. Whenever I have tested them against published laboratory/research methods they've agreed quite well. The tendency is to buy a kit for testing everything you can think of :-)) but eventually you'll find which measurements ... and how often you'll need to do them ... work best for your situation. During start-up PB gave us some test strips, but recommended we invest in a proper test kit.

I can see colors, but not shades. I cannot tell the difference between blue/purple and red/orange. When putting colors on the light in the pool, there is no difference (to me). Clear water and light yellow tinted would look the same. Same thing with light blue/light green/etc. I would only be able to distinguish color changes if the colors were bold or precipitated out of the solution. On test strips that I've seen, the pH ranges from 6.2-8.4....but they are all orange.

I have access to a digital pH meter, but am worried about the other essential tests. Are there any reliable digital meters available on the market?

Digital units I have seen need fairly frequent calibration. Not hard to do but essential.

If you can see a change from green to pink, pink to colorless, and red to blue, you would do well with the TF-100. The OTO chlorine and Phenol Red pH tests won't help you but the digital meter might be ideal for the pH and DPD-FAS tests will tell you your chlorine, both free and combined up to 50 ppm, way more than the OTO test or strips.
