Looks like the Norman area got hit.. and there are more chances for another tornado.

Please be careful and take cover if needed.

The Tornados killed 8 people in Oklahoma. Most (all?) of the fatalities were in a small town in southwest Oklahoma near the Texas border. An entire trailer park was wiped out. Just heavy rain and wind around the Tulsa area. How nice of you to ask. I hope others did alright.

Need advice from plumbers re:water filters

I'm not a plumber, but I am an engineer. I've mostly worked in dirty water since school, but I did mostly clean water then. THMs are trihalomethanes, and they are a class of chemicals called disinfection byproducts. Basically, any chemical that's added to disinfect drinking water reacts with naturally-occurring organic matter in the water (think the dissolved remnants of stuff like leaves, algae) to yield tiny tiny concentrations of these chemicals. The main thing that affects how much THMs form is the time the water sits in the pipe and storage tanks between the plant and the point of use. The last I paid attention to it, we know that THMs in massive quantities are carcinogenic in the lab. The rules your utility follows are an attempt to extrapolate from what we know to protect the public against exposure to tiny amounts over a long time. FWIW, my recollection is that the prime exposure path is actually via steam inhaled in the shower. The good news is that a carbon filter is a great way to remove the residual disinfectant (chlorine or chloramines), THMs, and other organic chemicals (VOCs- volatile organic compounds). And it takes care of the main complaint that leads to getting a filter in the first place- that the water doesn't taste good. I'm not a big RO proponent for home use. Unless you have someone who's immunocompromised or have a lot of dissolved solids (due to softening or from being in a coastal area that has saltwater intrusion), I think it's overkill. And it's expensive, has expensive consumables, and wastes a lot of water to produce a little. There are always exceptions, but that's my general feeling. Your faucet should be fine if you get a carbon filter. The problem with RO is that it makes the water more likely to dissolve metals it comes in contact with. Water that's just carbon filtered is still buffered to prevent this. I don't think there's a problem with going generic. The issue with the proprietary systems is that they lock you into their replacement cartridges and those are usually at a premium. You can get housings and filters much more cheaply. One tradeoff that comes to mind is that the proprietary setups may have an easier arrangement to replace filters. Otherwise, you have to be a bit of a plumber yourself to put together the housings, valves, fittings, etc. The simplest setup would be a single filter. This is like what’s in most fridge and point of use filters. There are combination cartridges that remove lead, cysts (tiny pathogen eggs that are very hard to kill) and have carbon for chlorine, THMs, VOCs. A step up would be a multistage system that adds a sediment filter and maybe a second stage of carbon. This is what we have in the water coolers at my office, which run on tap water instead of jugs. As for the pool, the color problem after the tornadoes is a bit of a stumper. Probably not something that’s going to happen often. And I don’t know if a simple sediment filter would take care of it. Otherwise, there’s a whole ‘nother set of chemistry going on in your pool, and frankly I wouldn’t worry about filtering what you fill the pool with unless it looks bad. Not to mention that a carbon filter that sits around unused tends to have some of the stuff it’s collected re-dissolve into the water sitting there. Last but not least, how well any of this works is dependent on how good a job of maintenance you do. Timely filter replacement is critical. Either based on a conservative time schedule or testing the filtered water for chlorine breakthrough. A buddy who does water treatment for Coke’s bottlers reminded me lately that it’s also a good idea to flush the system with unfiltered tap water when you replace filters. This puts some chlorinated water through so that you kill anything that’s grown in the housing and tube/pipes. Not something I logistically can do with my fridge filter but a very good idea. McMaster Carr (industrial supply house) has always been a good reference to get an idea of cost, but Amazon also seems to carry most everything these days too. I’d look there and look at some of the pre-built systems to decide what works best for you.

Severe weather hitting several states

Towns and villages west and northwest of Chicago have been hit hard by wedge tornados. The town of Fairdale, pop. 2200 is wiped out, with one confirmed death, and may have more. Crews are going door to door looking for victims and offering help. Strangers are helping farmers round up their livestock, or are looking for pets. I am well east of the storms path but we have been watcing the news and all the lighting the storm has generated. It was a wild night and we have been damn lucky that it missed the Ohare area. My friends in the area are all safe. Please, set up a plan for weather emergancies. Although we are on the outer edge of Chicago, we have a plan to get us and the dog into the basement. Candles, battery radio, comfy chairs, a first aid kit and a crate. Cell phone and flashlights were at the ready if we need to take cover.

Still in Muskogee, and under tornado watch, not warning, but also a flash flood warning. Supposed to ride my bike in Tahlequah tomorrow... all about the Oklahoma Bike Summit I am attending. Might have been better if I had stayed home... but, so far, so good. No hail damage on my now parked outside car... and besides the nearby tornado last night, and no electricity for hours... Round one passed without incident near me. I understand there was a lot in Norman. There is more in line to possibly hit us.

meanwhile, I found a roof leak. Will have to do some patching up around a vent when it dries back up.

Ain't home owner ship great? LOL, it is really what I wanted... home owner ship that is.

Round 1 is falling apart. We got some rain and a nice double rainbow. I hope the rest of the stuff goes by so easy.

There is a story on Yahoo that says the Nat'l Weather Forcasters are issuing a warning that the whole weekend is to be bad through the midwest. Please listen to the news if you live in the area!

No, I don't have a basement. Most Oklahomans don't. Some have storm cellars, but again, most don't.

I am not sure, if I want to add one here... they are costly...

I do have emergency stuff in my closet. Bike helmet, blanket, bottle of water and flashlight along with my cell phone.

I will head there, if it gets dicey here.

They are predicting a bad weekend for Oklahoma and Kansas all the conditions are right to produce some bad ones. When they predict them early like this you know it will be a rough time.

Here in Oklahoma, if you don't have a basement or cellar or neighbors with them, you put the bicycle helmet on your head and get into an inside closet, then just pray a lot when the tornado sirens start blowing.

I am shocked that most Oklahomans don't have basements! I would not have bought a house in Iowa without a basement.
On my way home from Dubuque today, I detoured to see Parkersburg, IA. Maybe 3 years ago, a tornado went through Parkerburg and wiped out the south half of the little town. Today the south half has new houses and businesses. It is easy to see just where the tornado was and see the older homes still standing. Some of the older homes are still missing their back porches and some are missing siding.

I've been told the water tables are too high for basements

We plan to have a shelter put into our garage. Haven't gotten around to it yet. Should have had one put in when we were building.

Adella, are you doing an above ground or below ground one?

Got friends with both. The friend with the above ground one seems to always have it full of junk.

The below ground one can be entered even if a car is in the garage. The opening is just barely in front of the car. Roger had it put in after the Edmond Tornado in 2009. That one was only 2 miles from his house.

I am not sure, if I will add one here. To wet when it rains for below ground... and not enough space for above ground. Besides, I am not to keen on the above ground ones. If I do a below, it will have to be in the back yard, but there is no way to put heavy equipment back there, just no room to get it back.

Ours would have to be above ground. It would weaken our foundation if we put one in the floor. I don't think we would be allowed to have one in the back yard. I have a closet under the stairs that go up to the attic. We think that area cold be modified if needed. I know a lot of people use the indoor shelters to store things. I'm not sure why since you don't always get warning before a tornado hits. I would keep the essentials in mine.

Line of thunderstorms have been passing through here this morning. Thankful that so far it isn't worse than that.

I hate basements...too musty, but every time a tornado watch is mentioned, I'm wishing I had one. LOL We are not in tornado territory but on occasion one hits this area. I hope you will all be safe and the tornados pass you by.
