Refinishing Garapa Deck
Comments (24)When I first stained my deck, I applied the 2nd coat the same day I applied the first coat (wet on wet), since that's what the directions on the can said. John does his farther apart. When I redo mine, I'll probably do 3 coats, a week apart. And I'll recoat each year. On my first go-round I did 2 coats, then just re-did a few boards after 1 year. If I had re-coated everything it would have staunched the aging. I will also put multiple coats on the verticals that face west. The TWP can said verticals might only need 1 coat, but the sun has hit my boards hard, so they could have used additional coats on the sun-facing sides. I'm still wondering if a full sand on the whole thing, with a floor sander, won't take less time than the 3-step process you did, considering step 3 alone, if I work at the same rate you did, will take me 6 hours. I can't imagine it taking me more than a full day to sand the whole thing. And I could do it all in one day instead of the waiting between steps for it to dry, etc. I take it you removed all your balusters to do the chemical work?...See Moregarapa deck stain--other options than Woodzotic?

Comments (19)New Pics coming soon...maybe this weekend. To Joanct: Seems to be holding up just fine, its very very hard wood. a little checking but hardly worth noticing. Not sure about maintenance...will have to be maintained at least once per year...typical of all wood but if you don't mind the gray color don't do anything. Not that hard to do...I am just a kinda handy husband myself... To nelson_ohio: Stuff doesn't move at all..maybe a slight cupping on my top hand railing but really haven't noticed anything that would stand out. The decking is stright as can be. To ekoreilly: Can't believe that cold and snow would have any impact on this stuff. I bought mine from East Teak...guy named George...great guy to deal with....See MoreNow Showing: Building a Big Ol' Garapa Deck
Comments (85)Not a lot of progress in the last week, as I went out of town for a wedding. Mr. Weedy and his dad ended up cutting a couple days off their trip to get back to Iowa because grandma was fading fast. So no side trip to OK this time to meet the famous Jon Mon in person. :-( Anyway, we're back from wedding and funeral and have 3 days before we go east to help one sister put a bathroom in her basement and paint another one's house. So today I finished up the big flight of stairs. The decking is kind-of squeaky, presumably because all the expanding and contracting from the rain/sun. So Mr. Weedy tightened up all the screws that aren't yet plugged. I guess that's what using Liquid Nails under the decking helps prevent? I've done that on the stairs and they feel very solid, so I'm sold on that technique for the next deck, should there be one. Our goal is to finish the plugging tomorrow and the wood part of the railings on Saturday. There are two of us, so it should go faster than my solo act the past 3 weeks. The staining will hopefully follow soon after we get back from my sisters'....See Moremarcus4
