When I was looking for counter depth refrigerator only sub zero or liebherr were "true" counter depth-about 24". I didn't want to spend that amount of money so ended up with a samsung. We are getting DW drawers and none of the appliances interfere with each other. Don't know how hard it would be to move the DW to the other side. Maybe it's not that big of a project?? Good luck!

I looked on AJ Madison and put the link to your choices. They are limited and most of them are 26 3/4" and 26 7/8"

Drop below 26" and the price doubles.

If it is this close, you could remove the drywall behind the fridge and that would gain you 1/2" inch.

You don't want to live with a DW that does not open. I lived in an apartment where I had to open the fridge to open the DW. It was not convenient.

Thinking about it the best solution for the short term is perhaps to get a narrow refrigerator. The space for the refrigerator is 38" (not including doorframe. If I include that it is a bit more). If I get a narrow refrigerator and put it as for to the left as possible then I think there may be room for the dishwasher to open. I will measure that in the morning. Short term that may be the solution.

Our Samsung is 26.5 AT THE SIDES of the fridge, then bows out in the middle of the fridge to 28". Their spec sheet says 28.5", so maybe there is something that sticks out 1/2 inch in the back that I didn't measure. This might work for you depending on how far the DW door extends toward the center of the fridge (I'm not sure how the DW door opens relative to the fridge).

You have to leave some space between the back of the fridge and the wall - I don't know if you accounted for that. I would think at least 1 inch.

However, this is a bottom freezer fridge, so the freezer handle may get in the way. They also make a side-by-side, but the spec sheet for that one says the depth is 27.25.

If you think this fridge might work, go to an appliance store with a tape measure to be sure.

As an aside, we have only had this fridge for about one month, but we love it. We went from a side-by-side to french door and really prefer the french door, as most people do. It doesn't have a huge capacity however (being counter depth).

Lowes is having a great sale on this fridge right now: $2300 (list is $2900) and you can get an extra 10% off with a coupon (google Lowes moving - and you're even moving - I wasn't). That price is for stainless.

There are lots of 30-32" wide refs to choose from - that's what I'd do if that was enough to have the doors clear.

I'd find out what the current owners had or ask them to leave it (if it is still there). If it is new construction, get it from the builder who screwed up.

I think Whirlpool and Samsung each make a medium size fridge that has the handle integrated into the door so there is not one to stick out. They are bottom freezer models with swing doors on the freezer. I have looked at them for my utility room where the door has to open back into a wall and the handle not sticking out would help the door open fully. Maybe it will help in your situation, but I think you'd still need to remove the drywall and possibly turn the studs behind the fridge 90 degrees and put in a shallow electical box. Turning a 2x4 90 degrees picks up about 2 inches and can generally be done if the wall is not weight bearing -- but not if you need the clearance for larger plumbing lines, etc. I'd have your realtor get you a quick estimate on what that would cost and ask for cash back at closing to cover it (would have to come from the seller or their agent to not screw up all the lending paperwork and delay closing).

The link shows one of the ones I looked at -- 28 inches deep. Shallower than that may be built-in -- in which case I'd ask for a last minute price reduction on the house sufficient to let you buy a built-in. If they blow a closing on this they may be required to disclose a "material defect" to any other potential buyer -- who might not be interested in the hassle. At least you aren't trying to run away.

This sounds like an older house. Until the late 80s, early 90s there would have been plenty of refrigerators that fit the bill. Then they all started getting deeper and deeper and...

The units in my complex that had the older fridge did not have an interference with the DW like I did. I remodeled the kitchen and solved that problem, and the latest owners bought another new fridge without checking the depth and *they can't open one of the adjacent cabinets. Its all because people want more and more cubic feet, and if you can't go UP or SIDEWAYS, due to cabinetry, the only way is to push out forward. (And potentially get in the way of clearances)

Problem has been solved. We did close on the house, I didn't ask for a price reduction. Frankly I was grateful that the seller pointed it out to me during the final walkthrough when I was measuring the refrigerator space. If she hadn't actually opened the dishwasher and showed me the problem I wouldn't have know until I bought a refrigerator and then couldn't open the door all the way.

We considered a 26" deep refrigerator -- but it was $6000!

We considered a 33" wide refrigerator. But, I knew I wouldn't be happy with it and would want to replace it later. We plan at some point to replace all the cabs in the kitchen so could have relocated the dishwasher then and gotten a new frigerator. At the same time, even though the existing dishwasher was less than a year old we didn't love it.

So...the solution was to replace the dishwasher with Fisher Paykel Dishdrawers which then allows us to buy a 36" wide refrigerator.
