I would just buy a new shade - check out Target and places like that. Most paint is flammable. I did paint a small shade with paints but its bulb is like 25watts and not very hot. So I would shop for a new shade and see what is available first. If after going to several stores and finding nothing, then get the paint.

I have spray painted several shades and have had no trouble with them. Mine were smooth .
If you have a Ross, they often have a really nice selection of shades and most are 13 dollars or even less.

I would not use paint. I have spray "painted" with fabric dye a shade that was some sort of off-white fabric on the outside - with plastic on the inside/adhered to it. I found fabric spray dye(pump...non aerosol) at a craft store and just sprayed the outside fabric. It came out nice and there was no flamable issue. It was a few years back and I am guessing that I spent about $5.00 or so for the spray dye. I used blue, but also bought a black spray dye that I have never used. The shade on my lamp was a very unsual shape that I could not find in the color of my choice so I used this method. However, my opinion is that since black shades are fairly easy to find, you may want to just buy a new shade. Possibly, black on the outside and metalic gold on the inside?

I was just on the Eddie Ross website and followed a link to where he had painted several shades. I kept wondering if the uneveness of the paint shows up when the lights are on?

I sprayed a shade and it looks great lit and unlit (the color is even). Unfortunately it was eight years ago and I'm not sure I can recall my name at present ... so I definitely can't remember the specific paint name! But I did go to the local paint store with the shade in hand and told them what I wanted to do (glossy black); they recommended a spray paint and off to work I went.

It's not until writing this that I remembered I meant to go back and daub metallic gold on the interior ... another project for the list!

Hmm I'd be here asking about the paint too. I don't know. Could you maybe dye it? Black lamps shades seem to be hard to find but since it's not to big you'd probably have a better chance in finding one. I think it's a cute lamp.

How about wrapping it in black fabric using spray adhesive? You could use some fun trim on the top and bottom to finish off.

I have spray-painted rigid opaque shades with excellent results, but not translucent ones. I have also painted them with acrylic paint and a brush.

My assumption (and this is only my assumption, so check with an expert...maybe on the paint forum?) is that, once the paint is thoroughly dry and all the volatile compounds have evaporated, flammability is not so much of an issue.

It does seem that replacing the shade is your best bet, however. (As you probably know, it's always best to take the lamp with you.)

I'm in the buy a new shade camp. Your dilemma reminded me of a recent article in our newspaper. Two local ladies have developed patented lampshade slipcovers.

I don't know the ladies and have never purchased from them, but thought the idea was clever and wanted to share. I won't link their site directly, but it's mentioned in the article.
