Do you think our house once had a front porch?
Comments (11)Easy way to find out - I don't hear this mentioned on this site and its one of the most wonderful items you can use in researching your "old" home and town...the sanborn maps! Sanborn maps were done for the whole country for fire insurance purposes and go aways back and were done periodically. They will outline the property, stories on home, shape, porches and structure, i.e. wood, etc. Most states have them online through the state library sites. I've attached our home 1913 American Foursquare from a 1919 map shows current 2 porches one is 1story and the other a 2story D=dwelling, x=shingle roof, 1-2 = stories, yellow=wood frame, etc....See MoreI need him with painting my front porch!
Comments (3)The door itself needs to be a color. Right now, you have to look hard to see where that door is. You can use about any color you want. Whatever is your favorite color and will stand out a bit and show there is a front door there. Not, another black, nor a gray. Once that is done, then it will be much easier to give advice on the porch itself. It all blends together now, like one big black blob. Getting the door done in a color, will take away some of the darkness....See MoreI have a HOT MESS on my hands, HELP!
Comments (7)I've looked all over to see how to respond to ppl graciously giving their ideas and Im just not savvy -My gramma can even do better than I! lol! I hope you see this! SnoBunnyz24--I actually have that pic pinned on Pintrest. That home is impeccable and has many interesting elements, as well as style, I love it. I did pin for the colors though and also am not sure if I can attach shutters (meeting with stucco guy late May), or even at least create a new wider stucco trim. Some windows have NO trim, only a stucco sill. The skinny leggy porch is actually wood, and I agree, hoping a moulding person can fatten those up! Not sure if storm doors are paintable--Ive been trying to find that answer--great ideas, thank you! housegal200-you are too kind! yes there are multiple surfaces!! If we decide to keep the cement drive, power washing is a GREAT idea I hadn't considered. We have been discussing just removing ALL of it, cement drive, pavers, different rock, etc. But I will certainly consider your suggestion, could save us some $$. Also, we only have one entryway that is drab and hidden under that low porch ceiling. I'd love to open that up somehow or at least bring attention to it. Im not sure my husband would allow a Portico, as drilling into a metal roof is a bit risky. but I like the idea so Ill certainly consider it! Thank you for your time....See MoreDo I need a front porch and/or landscaping to have curb appeal?
Comments (12)You have a wonderfully low maintenance home. Adding a porch to older homes I have noticed really does elevate them and bring them a more modern look, curiously. Curious because front porches are a thing of times gone by really. Adding a porch to your home would add maintenance. At this point 36 years in I am not sure that makes sense. As stated your home is lovely as is. I am sorry you have never embraced its look, but I am guessing your vision as a young homeowner had you thinking a totally different sort of home. You can't turn a ranch into a Farmhouse/two story Colonial by adding a porch. Perhaps a wider front walk, maybe give it a bit of a meandering curve...sometimes we just need a bit of a change I get it. You could also widen the front steps/stoop so you could get a chair or two on it. Create a bit of a seating area. That would look better with your roof line than an add on roofed porch. Extended to the left under the smaller window would keep you away from your picture window....See Morefarmgirlinky
