How Much Stuff in Your Frig Drawers?

Trying to decide on the best location for frig drawers. Can you tell me how much stuff you can fit in them and what kinds of items you have in each of your drawers. Do 1.5 or 2 liter soda bottles fit in there? What about gallon jugs of water? Thanks.

Hi Malhgold!

My kitchen is still a work in progress, but I've been using my fridge drawers for a few months now as part of my temporary kitchen to have more cold storage, and I LOVE them! I have the GE Monogram drawers that will eventually have panels on them. Right now they are just free standing units in my living room - and ugly with no fronts!

But the interior is another matter! They are bright and roomy and I already know I will love them as part of my new kitchen. They will go in the island on the outside edge facing out into the walking space. This is near my prep sink. I will claim the top drawer for veggies and we'll keep the milk in there.

This will keep the kids out of the main traffic of the kitchen when they need milk for their cereal (pantry is also outside the main work area of the kitchen).

The bottom drawer will be all kids stuff. Drinks, snack veggies and fruit, string cheese, applesauce, yogurts, etc. You get the idea. Since I went with the SZ 700 series, the fridge door would be high and heavy and I knew my little 4 year old son would not be able to self-serve, so we planned the drawers. The kids get the bottom and the top will be veggies and fruits near the prep sink and the milk so the kids can reach it.

You can stand up 2 liters, gallon jugs of milk or water. These are accessable, kid friendly and just absolutely wonderful. I'm beyond thrilled that I went this route, and I'm not even using them in my new kitchen yet!

Mine is similar to Rmkitchen's: 30" Miele all fridge and all freezer, and 24" Marvel drawers. My drawers are in my prep area, right across from the stove, and I adore them. I keep the bottom drawer in the big fridge for meats, so just have one big drawer there for produce, with some extras on the shelves, but in my bottom prep drawer I have leftover wine (which stands up in the Marvel bottom drawer), onions, lemons, garlic, butter, milk, and some beverages for company that no one else drinks. The top drawer is for "project" veg. That is, whatever I've bought for specific dishes rather than salads or general use. At other times (when the drawer is empty), I'll put in a large, cooked dish, like a brisket that needs to be cooled, skimmed and sliced, then cooked again. The whole roaster fits. Basically, the top drawer is for whatever is big and in the way. I also use it for defrosting the gigantabird at holiday time. :) It would work similarly as a children's fridge--the stuff that you don't want and need in the main fridge. If it is meant to be in a quiet space, do check out how loud these get while you're shopping. Some are quite loud when they cycle, while others are nearly silent. Mine is raised, and not quiet to begin with (not annoyingly loud, but noticeable). Perlick are expensive, but they're supposed to be quiet.

I'm trying hard to pare down my belongings. Our house is small, the kids have flown the coop. I have a garage and attic full of "good stuff" I put away, hoping either to sell or give to my kids/future grandkids. Well, I recently tried to give my pregnant daughter the baby bassinette ( a sort-of baby bed) we had used for our two daughters. She did not want it, saying it's old and moldy, it's probably dangerous. My feelings were hurt but I got over it. I'd donate it but I heard no one (no charities) want used baby items because they may be unsafe. I certainly wouldn't want someone to get hurt. So I'll save the bassinettte and let my grand-daughter to be use it as a toy for her dolls.

"Just wait until you have to pack up all that crap and move it." My SIL just bought a retirement home so they are decluttering their current house as a preparation for selling it--she keeps telling me she can't believe how much STUFF she's got to get rid of. When I go to their house I always admire how it looks nicely organized and without extraneous things all over. However, I also admire her tons of closets and storage space which she says leads to keeping, you guessed it, all that stuff LOL. I've decided I will play a mental game this summer and pretend we have to move; maybe that will be my motivation to get rid of much unnecessary and unused stuff in our house! I use the holidays and shopping for gifts to satisfy any yen I may have to be a retail hunter/gatherer. The past few years I increasingly feel as if I am gorging myself after staying on a careful and healthy diet; by the time January comes I feel so psychically bloated from all the shopping /buying that I need another year to rest up and recover! It's interesting to me to watch my young adult daughter who is setting up her first home. She loveslovesloves Home Goods, Marshalls, Pier 1 etc. And when I go with her I usually find stuff I could easily buy. I have a rule that I can't take anything from those places home the day I see it. That usually short circuits the purchase, I'm rarely motivated enough to fight the traffic and crowds to go back a second time!

How much “stuff” to put on the wall?

Typically less is more when it comes to decor, BUT this really does come down to style preference. Minimal decor translates to those few special, treasured pieces getting to stand out. In addition, you can avoid an overly cluttered look which is particularly essential to smaller spaces. Based on the amount of architectural interest of your new home, it doesn't look like you will need much wall decor to cozy up your space. You certainly do not need to adorn every wall. Keep in mind the walls with windows will most likely have window treatments which serve as functional decor so you wont need much else on those walls. Do look for those larger sections of wall- as in your dining room- to add a bit of art, sconces and/or light shelving. The recommendation would be to focus on 1 wall, maybe 2 walls, per room to address in a decorative manner. Happy decorating!

I just asked if you'd seen me post about this over on the appliance thread about the 24/24. I have posted a couple of times, but I'm guessing you haven't seen them -- or that at leat it would be helpful to have the info here all in one place.

Anyway, what's in them now --

Top drawer -- 2 gallons of milk, 1 gallon orange juice, 5 2 quart bottles or cartons of various juices, 1 very large jar of apple sauce, a large jar of grape jelly and enough room for another galloon of something.

Bottom drawer -- about 20 juice boxes or pouches onthe back shelf (room for a few more -- or soda cans can stand back there), about 6 bottles of beer, similar amount of bottled water and a dozen canned drinks woth room for another dozen stacked on top of them and a little space to spare.

I was sure we were told these would hold a 2 liter bottle, but they don't stand up in them. When we buy 2 liter bottles, it's usually for an event and they don't stick around, so that alone wouldn't have been a deal breaker for us. If your use is different, then you may want to look at another maker -- but these have worked out really well, and they are opened a LOT.

My fridge drawers are kitty corner to the big fridge, on the opposite side of the kitchen. I keep fruit, snacks, milk boxes, yogurts, etc. Mostly the kid's snacks, it allows him to come in and get what he wants without entering the busy cooking or prepping zones.
