I want to make a big wood tray for our dining room table

about 18 x 24",I've been saving a beautiful piece od mahagony and walnut for this project...

Since I know we won't get around to it for

awhile, as we're busy we doing our chairs and windows,

and have to work outside getting the garden cleaned up...

I started to think in another direction, as a temporary measure.

I went to Home Goods and bought this nice wide framed mirror with beveled

glass. It's about 22" x 24". Until we get back into the

shop to make my dream tray, I'll use this.

What do you think?

A clever idea, and very pretty! One teeny suggestion: since the mirror visually doubles everything you have on it, you may want to edit your things a bit, or perhaps put some things outside the mirror. But it really is lovely, and I suspect a lot of us will steal your idea.

Hey Ink, that was funny!! There is an issue of personal taste here. For me, the most important thing would be to have plants that I like. Then the next question would be to consider maintenance/airspace. As Frankie suggested, this can be a lot of work, but also, half the plant will be on the neighbours' property where you can't prune without gaining access. I don't know what a wax myrtle is for some reason but there are columnar trees/shrubs that will avoid this problem. Then there is the question of repetition. A row of a single type of plant (a hedge in effect), or a grouping for that matter, suggests either a formal or somewhat institutional approach. A hedge is a great boundary in many ways, but does require pruning. A varied palette can look a little hodgepodge but has tons of charm and often year-round interest. A key decision is also whether you want this privacy year-round or just in summer. You can do more variety with deciduous material. Finally, there is an issue of time. Depending on how big you buy (and if planting close it is best to buy small), you will start to have your privacy in about 6 years. There are times where there is a great deal to be said for a taller fence! Or other faster methods. Spin around the forum here with the search word privacy screen, you'll find some discussion. KarinL

I do this every year with my window boxes and other large containers. Cover them in different ways. 1. Used large piece of plastic, stuck dry cleaner hangers (without the cardboard) in the soil to hold the plastic up. Used clothespins to secure the plastic to the window box. I remember seeing photos of pots with water bottles used to keep the plastic up. 2. Covered separate areas of the pot with individual 2L tops (bottoms cut off). This was great for using with seeds that have different germination times. 3. For containers that are still small enough to pick up easily I put them into a large clear plastic bag.

sashamommy - thanks - challenge probably, but hoping less so than finding one that fits size wise and we like the style of too. Been 3 years of searching now. We found one, but it was discontinued. Deb - Yeah still haven't done anything with it. DH wants it out of the garage so I figure once I have closed on this idea I'll pitch it to him. He's not huge on a white bed though. We have black framed art/photographs on all the walls in the bedroom and the master bath has black framed mirrors and some accessories. Hence my thought of black. I'm all for white though on any furniture. work_in_progress - the bed is in the only spot where it will fit. Do you think a whitish creamy color would go with the description above for Deb. We have no other white except the trim, WT, and white sheets. I do have a white on white duvet too. Also will be a tougher sell for DH. palimpsest - Thanks for the vote of confidence that the additional styling I added would work out. You are right though on the muted greyed colors. The other ones tend to be natural pine (not a likely option due to matching of woods and hard to strip existing) or white. I don't feel I necessarily need to stick to traditional swedish since I'm modifying it anyways, but would be nice if I could, although I can't see them as neutral. Gray would be neutral, but not really go with anything else in the room. Here is another direction, and some of the photographs to the left of the bed too.

Thanks again for all the suggestions! Redecor, love the link. That's kind of what I'm imagining.... I'm going back and forth between all the comments, sometimes thinking, yes, only need one mirror, then at other times thinking that I need to tie in the height of the room and put something up higher. So, mitchdesj, any suggestions for one amazing mirror? I love mirrors, and can't decide what would be appropriate for that space. I was also thinking of one large clock? The room actually gets a ton of sunlight. I will take better photos and post sometime. I need to learn how to post photos from our regular camera. I'm a little technically challenged and can only do it from my phone! The room faces south and has a wall of windows and the clerestory windows. Roseabbey, I guess you can't tell from the photo, but the chase is a couple of shades darker than the wall color. The wall color is SW Concord Buff, and the chase is SW Safari. We just put a wreath up for the holidays and it looks lovely. May be just one mirror instead of the wreath. I'll post pictures in the next couple of days/weeks.... If any body would like to photo shop some mirrors in, I'd appreciate it. Thanks again!

Definitely think it's a great idea! ~ (grin) ~ here is a picture I just took of my table ~ I've used this mirror for the last three or four years and love it ~~

Should I loose the candy dish, and just have the little
painter painting the fish?

The last picture is my favorite. Love the curly willow and seed pods. Did you do your own floral arrangement?

Love the last picture as well! I think I'd remove the candy dish as your planter is so lovely, you will better able to see the reflection.

Joann, I like the candy dish. The shape of the handle looks nice with the crescent moon shape on the vase. You are very creative to think of having the boy "painting" the vase.

lefleur, I like your arrangement too. The ladies with hats are so interesting and pretty.

Looks great and I love lefleur's mirror too! To make it look more like a tray you can always add round knobs to the bottom corners and 2 drawer pulls to the top as handles. I've been meaning to make one for myself using vintage hardware and a old mirror...just haven't got around to it.

just cropped up the last photo to show the little
painter and the reflection in the mirror, LOL

Claire, yes, I make my own arrangement... except for the silk flowers
(which I change off seasonally) everything else in the fish is from my garden...
the lotus pods are dried from our lotus flowers,
the twisted branches are from my Harry Lauder Walking
Stick Tree, and the cat tails from our pond.
I have another natural arrangement on the piano that I recently made, I'll take a pic of that as well...

I was wondering is the arrangement too tall???

the center pods.
